Breathtaking Awe

A few nights ago, the neighbors gathered in the streets to see this beautiful Arizona sunset!

You all know how I love my sunrises and sunsets. As I was standing there, taking it all in Gail said, “God did that”! He sure did – He painted the sky with the deepest golden hues – beautiful.

This morning I waiting to see the sunrise. The skyline is cloudy gray but that’s ok too. The last couple of days we have enjoyed much-needed rain. The desert is feeling refreshed.

I find myself overwhelmed with gratitude for the breath I have in my lungs – clean, fresh air. Breath to praise such an awesome and almighty God but more than that – breath to talk with my loving heavenly Father and to thank Him for all He does.

Loving family, good health, a secure home, the beauty of his creation, the stillness and the peace I feel in His presence each day and the dear friends He has added to my life.

Yesterday I asked you to make a thankfulness list. I hope you did. This morning I’m asking you to follow King David’s example and enter into praise.

“Praise the Lord! Praise God in His holy place! Praise Him in the heavens of His power! Praise Him for His great works! Praise Him for all His greatness!

Praise Him with the sound of a horn. Praise Him with harps. Praise Him with timbrels and dancing. Praise Him with strings and horns. Praise Him with loud sounds. Praise Him with loud and clear sounds. Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord!” Psalm 150 NLV

Do you have breath? If you do, praise the Lord!

Great Is Our God!

This morning starts with a warm cup of coffee and heart filled with praise.

Last night we sat outside for quite a while thanking God for the events of the past few days. Today, we will spend some time with our daughters, sons-in-law and three of the grandkids. We are blessed to live close and have these opportunities. Blessed indeed.

Life is pretty close to perfect today. However, not every day has been filled with the joy I feel in my heart this morning. There have been days of struggles, days of tears. Whatever the day presents you with I want you to understand this one thing, our heavenly Father is faithful.

He is faithful when we are struggling (emotionally, physically, financially or spiritually). When we are in a good place, the Father is faithful!

His love endures forever and it’s unconditional. He never changes. He’s always the same. He’s not bothered by circumstances – He is God! He is praiseworthy and trustworthy!

I know, if we seek Him, we will find Him to be faithful.

“You rule forever, Lord, and you are on your throne, ready for judgment. 8 You judge the world fairly and treat all nations with justice. 9 The poor can run to you because you are a fortress in times of trouble. 10 Everyone who honors your name can trust you, because you are faithful to all who depend on you.” Psalm 9:7-10 CEV

We can trust Him with everything, the large and the small. I see it like this. Since we are His children, He desires to be involved in every area of our lives. Remember being little and having a splinter in your finger or a scraped knee? It was so special to have it kissed and made better. That’s what a loving parent does. The injury may have been trivial, but the love was great.

Our Father is faithful to all who depend on Him. He doesn’t leave us to flounder on our own. He can be depended upon always – in the needs and our greatest challenges.

“I worship at your holy temple and praise you for your love and your faithfulness. You were true to your word and made yourself more famous than ever before. When I asked for your help, you answered my prayer and gave me courage…I am surrounded by trouble, but you protect me against my angry enemies. With your own powerful arm you keep me safe. You, Lord, will always treat me with kindness. Your love never fails. You have made us what we are. Don’t give up on us now!” Psalm 138:2-3, 7-8 CEV

Our Father is faithful, His love never fails! Our God is great!

What Is Man…

This picture came up in my computer notifications yesterday. I had taken it a year ago.

I remember specifically how awe-struck I was in viewing the evening sky. I sat in my camp chair and watched as the clouds slowly moved, with the darkness embracing them. I had to capture some of the grandeur!

These words came to mind then and now.

“Our Lord and Ruler, your name is wonderful everywhere on earth! You let your glory be seen in the heavens above. With praises from children and from tiny infants, you have built a fortress. It makes your enemies silent, and all who turn against you are left speechless.

I often think of the heavens your hands have made, and of the moon and stars you put in place. Then I ask, ‘Why do you care about us humans? Why are you concerned for us weaklings?’ You made us a little lower than you yourself, and you have crowned us with glory and honor.

You let us rule everything your hands have made. And you put all of it under our power— the sheep and the cattle, and every wild animal, the birds in the sky, the fish in the sea, and all ocean creatures.

Our Lord and Ruler, your name is wonderful everywhere on earth!” Psalm 8 CEV

I, too, often think about the heavens and the earth and all that the Lord has made and I ask, “who am I that You, Father God, think of me”. God’s word brings my answer:

“God’s Spirit doesn’t make us slaves who are afraid of him. Instead, we become his children and call him our Father. 16 God’s Spirit makes us sure that we are his children.” Romans 8:15-16 CEV

The Father thinks about us because we are His children. His love is everlasting, His mercy is new every morning, His faithfulness endures to a thousand generations and His grace is sufficient in every situation.

When I see the clouds, or an evening/morning sky filled with beauty my heart is stirred to sing that great, old hymn of the faith.

“Oh Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder
Consider all the worlds Thy hands have made
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder
Thy power throughout the universe displayed

When through the woods and forest glades I wander
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees
When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur
And see the brook and feel the gentle breeze

Then sings my soul my Saviour God to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art?
Then sings my soul my Saviour God to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art?”

Let’s ask the question again, “what is man that Thou art mindful of him”? We will probably never understand the depth of His answer to us. His heart says He wants us to know this:

“…Stand firm and be deeply rooted in his love. 18  I pray that you and all God’s people will understand what is called wide or long or high or deep. 19 I want you to know all about Christ’s love, although it is too wonderful to be measured. Then your lives will be filled with all that God is.” Ephesians 3:17-19 CEV

Oh Father, how great Thou art!

Great Things

I hope you woke up this morning looking for things to be thankful for. If I have started you on a search of gratitude I am very happy.

Sunday morning during praise and worship we sang a song which was written by Phil Wickham a few years ago, “Great Things”. This morning when I woke those lyrics and music were filling my heart and my head.

Great Things”

Come let us worship our King
Come let us bow at His feet
He has done great things
See what our Savior has done
See how His love overcomes
He has done great things
He has done great things

Oh hero of Heaven, You conquered the grave
You free every captive and break every chain
Oh God, You have done great things
We dance in Your freedom, awake and alive
Oh Jesus, our Savior, Your name lifted high
Oh God, You have done great things

Great Things!

Our God and Father is the God, who does great things. From the beginning of time He has shown His greatness on behalf of His people. First, He created everything we see; He protected Noah and his family in the ark; He promoted Joseph to a high place in pharaoh’s court to save His people from famine.

Our God used Moses to deliver His people from Egypt; He used David to defeat Goliath and Esther to save His people from destruction. The Father sent Jesus to save us all from our sins and to give us an abundant life where we are forgiven and blessed.

Just yesterday He gave Dave and I safe travels as we ventured from our home to the Phoenix area. We are blessed with good health and plenty to eat. We’ve been blessed with peace, joy and strength.

Our God does great things!

“It is wonderful to be grateful and to sing your praises, Lord Most High! It is wonderful each morning to tell about your love and at night to announce  how faithful you are. I enjoy praising your name to the music of harps, because everything you do makes me happy,
and I sing joyful songs. You do great things, Lord. Your thoughts are too deep for an ignorant fool to know or understand.” Psalm 92 CEV

This morning is a time to announce how faithful our Father is.

You may be going through a particularly trying time, feeling all alone and you could even be wondering why you don’t see the Lord doing great things for you. There in, is the great thing! He is with you – He has promised to never leave you alone and if you will place your fear and heartache in His hands, you will see that He replaces them with His peace. Your circumstances may not seem to change but your heart will and you will see the Father bring you through in His love, peace and strength.

David had to face Goliath head on and when he did, God did great things!

“But you will rule over all of us forever, and your hateful enemies will be scattered and then destroyed…12 Good people will prosper like palm trees, and they will grow strong like the cedars of Lebanon…15 And they will say about you, ‘The Lord always does right! God is our mighty rock.'” Psalm 92:8,9,12,15 CEV

Thank you Lord for doing great things!

Great Day of Praise

Thank you to those who responded yesterday with comments on the blog telling me three of the things you were grateful for. Add three new things to your journaling this morning – let’s keep this accounting of praise going throughout the month of November.

When I was a child, we grew up singing a hymn in our church, “Count Your Blessings”.

1 When upon life’s billows you are tempest tossed,
When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,
Count your many blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.

Refrain:
Count your blessings, name them one by one;
Count your blessings, see what God hath done;
Count your blessings, name them one by one;
Count your many blessings, see what God hath done.

2 Are you ever burdened with a load of care?
Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear?
Count your many blessings, ev’ry doubt will fly,
And you will be singing as the days go by. [Refrain] by Johnson Oatman 1897

Counting our blessings puts our focus where it belongs, on the Lord and His goodness. The Psalms are filled with praise – King David wrote many of the psalms as songs of praise and deliverance.

“Sing a new song to the Lord! Everyone on this earth, sing praises to the Lord,  sing and praise his name. Day after day announce, ‘The Lord has saved us!’ Tell every nation on earth, ‘The Lord is wonderful and does marvelous things! The Lord is great and deserves greatest praise! He is the only God worthy of our worship. Other nations worship idols, but the Lord created the heavens. Give honor and praise to the Lord, whose power and beauty
fill his holy temple.’” Psalm 96:1-6 CEV

This psalm admonishes everyone on earth to sing praises, every day! (Read the whole chapter). Praise the Lord because He is great and does marvelous things. Our God is not an idol made with human hands. No, He is the God who created all things.

When we see a beautiful sunrise, praise the Lord. When we experience the beauty of the clouds in the sky, the flowers in bloom, the sighting of a new born calf, a field ripe with grain, the miracle of a new life or the expression of age-old love – we should praise the Lord. He is the one who has filled the earth with wonder and our hearts with love.

“Tell the heavens and the earth to be glad and celebrate! Command the ocean to roar with all of its creatures 12  and the fields to rejoice with all of their crops. Then every tree in the forest will sing joyful songs 13 to the Lord.” verses 11-13 CEV

Don’t let the mully-grubs capture your thinking. Lift your voice and make this a great day of praise!

Great Things

Sunday afternoons are travel days at our house. Dave and I watch several travelogs and plan the destination for some of our next adventures. Beautiful places, remote places, interesting out-of-the-way places.

Yesterday we saw a place we never knew existed in Idaho, Craters of the Moon National Park. The whole area was created by a lava flow. It has amazing caves and interesting lava fields to hike and explore.

It is a testament to our great God!

“Let all that I am praise the Lord. O Lord my God, how great you are! You are robed with honor and majesty. You are dressed in a robe of light. You stretch out the starry curtain of the heavens; you lay out the rafters of your home in the rain clouds. You make the clouds your chariot; you ride upon the wings of the wind. The winds are your messengers; flames of fire are your servants. You placed the world on its foundation so it would never be moved.” Psalm 104:1-5 NLT

Please take time to read Psalm 104 in its entirety. It details God’s greatness in creating this earth of ours.

He has done great things!

“My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth! He will not let you stumble;
the one who watches over you will not slumber. Indeed, he who watches over Israel never slumbers or sleeps. The Lord himself watches over you! The Lord stands beside you as your protective shade.” Psalm 121: 2-5 NLT

The vastness, the variety, the exquisite beauty of creation tell the story of our all-powerful Father. But they also proclaim loudly His protection and provision for those He loves. Never does He fall asleep; He is constantly watching over us!

Our Father does great things!

Yesterday morning one of the worship songs we sang reminded us “He has done great things”.

“Come let us worship our King
Come let us bow at His feet
He has done great things
See what our Savior has done
See how His love overcomes
He has done great things
He has done great things

Oh hero of Heaven, You conquered the grave
You free every captive and break every chain
Oh God, You have done great things
We dance in Your freedom, awake and alive
Oh Jesus, our Savior, Your name lifted high
Oh God, You have done great things

You’ve been faithful through every storm
You’ll be faithful forevermore
You have done great things
And I know You will do it again
For Your promise is “Yes and amen”
You will do great things
God, You do great things”

Great Things lyrics by Phil Wickham

Creation declares the greatness of God’s power. Jesus declares the greatness of His love.

Experience the great things of our Father!
