Be Practical

Practical. God is practical.

Everything He does has balance. Gravity, sunrise, sunset, changing seasons; earth, sky and water created before fish, plants and animals. Sun produces light and heat which induces plant growth. The moon places a pull on the tides. Balance.

What’s out of balance and impractical about God is His unconditional love. It doesn’t matter what we do or don’t do, God’s love for us will be the same. (Now that doesn’t mean He approves of everything we do, not in the slightest but He always loves us.)

Men won’t go to hell because God hates them. They will go because they don’t accept His gift love and His sacrifice for them.

God expects us to put His love in action. Since we have Christ living in us it’s His love that should be flowing out of us.

“Together with these things, the most important part of your new life is to love each other. Love is what holds everything together in perfect unity. 15 Let the peace that Christ gives control your thinking. It is for peace that you were chosen to be together in one body. And always be thankful.

16 Let the teaching of Christ live inside you richly. Use all wisdom to teach and counsel each other. Sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with thankfulness in your hearts to God. 17 Everything you say and everything you do should be done for Jesus your Lord. And in all you do, give thanks to God the Father through Jesus.” Colossians 3:14-17 ERV

The most important thing we can do is love each other. Love brings us to a place of peace. When we love we know that we have done all God has asked of us and we are responsible to let God do the rest. When we trust God to do what only He can do we can be thankful because He definitely has the talent and capability of handling His part.

We love not because those around us deserve our love but because God first loved us and so we can extend that love to others. It makes our Father happy to see us acting like Him. It is a reflection of His goodness.

“But I am giving you a new command. You must love each other, just as I have loved you. If you love each other, everyone will know that you are my disciples.” John 13:34-35 CEV

I’m not asking you to go out and love the whole world today, but I am asking you to extend God’s love to your co-worker, your neighbor, child, spouse or sibling.

Love unconditionally the way God loves you. It’s our way of putting His love into practice.

Thirsting For More

Last night after dinner, Dave and I took Kim and Austin to look for wildlife. We drove several miles down the highway searching the meadows.

When we started out there was a light rain falling and the further we traveled down this mountain highway the heavier it got. It seemed we wouldn’t be spotting any animals this night so we turned back to and were going to head to home.

Then there they were. A small herd of cow elk and their calves. Right off the road’s edge, in the meadow. I’m sorry the image is a bit blurry but I only had my phone and when I zoomed in, it distorted the image.

Anyway, back to the elk. We know there are hundreds that live in that wooded area but they stay hidden in the day, coming down to the meadow in the early morning and just about dusk. They eat their fill of the green grasses, covered with the rain’s moisture. They are content.

“As a deer gets thirsty for streams of water, I truly am thirsty for you, my God. 2 In my heart, I am thirsty for you, the living God.” Psalm 42:1-2 CEV

Thirsty for the living God.

What brought these elk out into the meadow, out from the protection of the trees, was their hunger and thirst. They came to this place to feed, to a place to find nourishment.

“Those who are hungry and thirsty to be right with God are happy, because they will be filled.” Matthew 5:6 NLV

God promises that when we have a hunger for Him and His ways we will be filled. Satisfied. Content.

“You should praise the Lord for his love and for the wonderful things he does for all of us. 9 To everyone who is thirsty, he gives something to drink; to everyone who is hungry, he gives good things to eat.” Psalm 107:8-10 CEV

I am determined to thirst for the more of God and His love. I know I will be filled.

Appraised Value

One of the first things I saw this morning was a posting of things to do to improve your own “self worth”.

Oh my!

I tried that for years. In high school I wanted to be part of the in-crowd, I never was. That meant I had to have the right friends, wear the right clothes, be a cheerleader or a cheerleader’s friend and the list went on.

As an adult that same challenge follows us. The right job, house, spouse, car, vacation spot. It can be devastating emotionally when these things escape our grasp.

God’s opinion of us is so much greater than our opinion of ourselves. He sees us, created in His image. Like a jeweler examining a precious diamond, He looks us over and sees a beauty that others don’t see.

“And they shall be Mine, says the Lord of hosts, in that day when I publicly recognize and openly declare them to be My jewels (My special possession, My peculiar treasure). And I will spare them, as a man spares his own son who serves him.” Malachi 3:17 AMPC

He sees us as valuable, priceless and worth the ultimate sacrifice.

He loved us enough to send His Son to die for us so that we could live in Him!

Now that alone should drive out any feelings of low self-esteem or worthlessness!

” Brothers and sisters, God chose you to be his. Think about that! Not many of you were wise in the way the world judges wisdom. Not many of you had great influence, and not many of you came from important families. 27 But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise. He chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 28 And God chose what the world thinks is not important—what the world hates and thinks is nothing. He chose these to destroy what the world thinks is important. 29 God did this so that no one can stand before him and boast about anything. 30 It is God who has made you part of Christ Jesus. And Christ has become for us wisdom from God. He is the reason we are right with God and pure enough to be in his presence. Christ is the one who set us free from sin. 31 So, as the Scriptures say, “Whoever boasts should boast only about the Lord.” I Corinthians 1:26-31 ERV

Christ gave his life to purchase our salvation. He gave all He had, He established our value.

“Also, God’s kingdom is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. 46 One day he found a very fine pearl. He went and sold everything he had to buy it.” Matthew 13:45-46 CEV

God’s appraisal is complete. He has examined us and in His expert opinion we are priceless.

Too Much

Yesterday evening some campers were returning from a walk to the lake and they stopped to tell us what they had seen. When they were standing at the lake’s edge, they had five or six osprey fly directly overhead.

They had told us, just the night before, they had hoped to see some and then tonight there they were. Their comment was “it was almost too much to take in”.

Too much!

Our Father is the God of too much.

“From far away, the Lord will appear to his people. The Lord says, “I love you people with a love that continues forever. That is why I have continued showing you kindness.” Jeremiah 31:3 ERV

“So remember that the Lord your God is the only God, and you can trust him! He keeps his agreement. He shows his love and kindness to all people who love him and obey his commands. He continues to show his love and kindness through a thousand generations,” Deuteronomy 7:9 ERV

“This faith and knowledge make us sure that we have eternal life. God promised that life to us before time began—and God does not lie.” Titus 1:2 ERV

Too much! Too much love – it continues forever. Too much – His kindness extends to a thousand generations. Too much – He gives eternal life and He is always truthful, He cannot lie.

“Lord my God, you have done many amazing things! You have made great plans for us—too many to list. I could talk on and on about them, because there are too many to count.” Psalm 40:6 ERV

“There are many other things that Jesus did. If every one of them were written down, I think the whole world would not be big enough for all the books that would be written.” John 21:25 ERV

“The Lord’s kindness never fails! If he had not been merciful, we would have been destroyed 23 The Lord can always be trusted to show mercy each morning. 24 Deep in my heart I say, ‘The Lord is all I need; I can depend on him!” Lamentations 3:22-24 CEV

Too many great plans, too many miracles and good things; unending kindness, always trustworthy, daily mercy. He is ALL we need.

Too much – like the mountain skyline. Each day I stare, sometimes breathless, it seems impossible to take it all in.

“You, Lord, are my shepherd. I will never be in need…You honor me as your guest, and you fill my cup until it overflows. 6 Your kindness and love will always be with me each day of my life, and I will live forever in your house, Lord.” Psalm 23 CEV

We will never exhaust the mercy, the kindness, the provision or the love of our heavenly Father or of Christ Jesus, our Lord.

They have no end. They are simply too much!

What Is Man…

This picture came up in my computer notifications yesterday. I had taken it a year ago.

I remember specifically how awe-struck I was in viewing the evening sky. I sat in my camp chair and watched as the clouds slowly moved, with the darkness embracing them. I had to capture some of the grandeur!

These words came to mind then and now.

“Our Lord and Ruler, your name is wonderful everywhere on earth! You let your glory be seen in the heavens above. 2 With praises from children and from tiny infants, you have built a fortress. It makes your enemies silent, and all who turn against you are left speechless.

3 I often think of the heavens your hands have made, and of the moon and stars you put in place. 4 Then I ask, ‘Why do you care about us humans? Why are you concerned for us weaklings?’ 5 You made us a little lower than you yourself, and you have crowned us with glory and honor.

6 You let us rule everything your hands have made. And you put all of it under our power— 7 the sheep and the cattle, and every wild animal,8 the birds in the sky, the fish in the sea, and all ocean creatures.

9 Our Lord and Ruler, your name is wonderful everywhere on earth!” Psalm 8 CEV

I, too, often think about the heavens and the earth and all that the Lord has made and I ask, “who am I that You, Father God, think of me”. God’s word brings my answer:

“God’s Spirit doesn’t make us slaves who are afraid of him. Instead, we become his children and call him our Father. 16 God’s Spirit makes us sure that we are his children.” Romans 8:15-16 CEV

The Father thinks about us because we are His children. His love is everlasting, His mercy is new every morning, His faithfulness endures to a thousand generations and His grace is sufficient in every situation.

When I see the clouds, or an evening/morning sky filled with beauty my heart is stirred to sing that great, old hymn of the faith.

“Oh Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder
Consider all the worlds Thy hands have made
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder
Thy power throughout the universe displayed

When through the woods and forest glades I wander
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees
When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur
And see the brook and feel the gentle breeze

Then sings my soul my Saviour God to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art?
Then sings my soul my Saviour God to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art?”

Let’s ask the question again, “what is man that Thou art mindful of him”? We will probably never understand the depth of His answer to us. His heart says He wants us to know this:

“…Stand firm and be deeply rooted in his love. 18  I pray that you and all God’s people will understand what is called wide or long or high or deep. 19 I want you to know all about Christ’s love, although it is too wonderful to be measured. Then your lives will be filled with all that God is.” Ephesians 3:17-19 CEV

Oh Father, how great Thou art!

Practice Kindness

Being kind goes a long way in life today. With so many being rude and self-centered kindness and genuine concern are like a cup of cool water on a hot day.

Practice Kindness just because you can!

Not sure what makes people who don’t know you think they can criticize or make hurtful comments but some feel they have a “right” to express their opinions without knowing anything about you.

What a difference it makes to say something kind!

I remember when I was young and learning to play the piano, I was required to practice every day. Mom would set the timer on the kitchen stove and I would have to sit on the piano bench and practice. On most days I would rather be out playing but I knew if I was going to improve I had to sit there and going through my scales, then my selected pieces and finally I would get to end with a song I really liked.

There was a little song that would go through my head, “Practice makes perfect, practice makes perfect”.

The same with kindness. The more we “practice”, it begins to become natural. A kind word, a gesture, a helping hand, a smile, a sacrifice of time, a listening ear, a touch. All of these are ways of saying I care.

“If you are guided by the Spirit, you won’t obey your selfish desires. 17 The Spirit and your desires are enemies of each other. They are always fighting each other and keeping you from doing what you feel you should. 18 But if you obey the Spirit, the Law of Moses has no control over you…

22 God’s Spirit makes us loving, happy, peaceful, patient, kind, good, faithful, 23 gentle, and self-controlled. There is no law against behaving in any of these ways. 24 And because we belong to Christ Jesus, we have killed our selfish feelings and desires. 25 God’s Spirit has given us life, and so we should follow the Spirit. 26 But don’t be conceited or make others jealous by claiming to be better than they are.” Galatians 5:16-26 CEV

We need to let the Spirit lead us even in the simple things of the day.

Let the Father’s love shine through! It’s time to practice.

In the Midst of Decay

I took this picture a week or so back while Dave and I were out on a walk. It’s the little things that speak to my heart.

Here we have a decaying piece of tree, dead pine needles but from beneath these little wildflowers push through and bask in the sun.

“…but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.” II Corinthians 4:16 KJV

Such is life.

As I get older I see my body showing signs of age. There are wrinkles, reduced strength, my joints creak, my skin has begun to sag…Let’s stop there, I think you get the point.

However, my spirit and my emotions are stronger than they’ve ever been. I don’t worry and fret as much, I rely less and less on my own strength and depend more and more on the Lord’s. It’s His word that provides direction and wisdom, instruction and comfort.

“When a wind from the Lord blows on them, the grass dies and the flower falls. Yes, all people are like grass. 8 Grass dies and flowers fall,  but the word of our God lasts forever.” Isaiah 40:7-8 ERV

God’s love will never fail. His Word is eternal. Those things will stand forever!

In the midst of the decay, let’s base our life, our eternal life on those things that last forever.

Pure Motives

When you are doing something nice for someone, do you ever hear “they probably won’t appreciate this anyway” going off in your head? If so, you’re not alone. I had to deal with that many times in my younger years.

I Corinthians 13, the love chapter, tells us that if we martyr ourselves and it isn’t motivated by love – then it profits us nothing. “I’m giving all my time to do this or that and no one will really appreciate it anyway – no one is going to know how hard I worked, how I gave up sleep, how much it cost me to do this nice thing” – these are all wrong motives!

Years ago, I would do things for people just to get them to like or accept me. I tried to buy friendship -what a destructive force that can be! I was so insecure in who I was that I needed constant affirmation from others that I was lovable.

Then I heard a wonderful godly woman, Dale Evans Rogers, speak in our college chapel service about God’s love, His unconditional love, and it got through. Knowing that God loves me – really loves me – is more than enough acceptance to last a lifetime.

I went from doing things for people to get them to like and accept me to doing the same things because I really loved those people. I wanted them to know they were loved and appreciated. A complete turnaround in my motivation.

The prodigal son tried to buy friends and they abandon him when he could no longer foot the bill for their entertainment.

“Not long after that, the younger son packed up everything he owned and left for a foreign country, where he wasted all his money in wild living. 14 He had spent everything, when a bad famine spread through that whole land. Soon he had nothing to eat.” Luke 15:13-14 CEV

Our motivation should be one of expressing love without expecting anything in return.

“I may give away everything I have to help others, and I may even give my body as an offering to be burned. But I gain nothing by doing all this if I don’t have love. 4 Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous, it does not brag, and it is not proud. 5 Love is not rude, it is not selfish, and it cannot be made angry easily. Love does not remember wrongs done against it. 6 Love is never happy when others do wrong, but it is always happy with the truth. 7 Love never gives up on people. It never stops trusting, never loses hope, and never quits. 8 Love will never end.” I Corinthians 13:3-8 CEV

Jesus was always being criticized for His actions of compassion. He ate with tax collectors, engaged fallen women in conversation, showed compassion and healing to the outcasts. His motive was always pure, one of love.

“Whoever wants to be first must serve the rest of you like a slave. 45 Follow my example: Even the Son of Man did not come for people to serve him. He came to serve others and to give his life to save many people.” Mark 10:44-45 ERV

Let’s serve others with a pure heart, no other motivation is required. We have the opportunity to be an example of Jesus’ love.

Feeling Small?

Before we get into today’s blog let me explain about yesterday. My signal wasn’t strong enough to load and post a blog so there was none. I pray you had a wonderful day and that sometime throughout the day you felt the overwhelming sense of God’s love.

Saturday was a day off for us. Dave and I went on a hike. The first location we choose, unknown to us, was an eagle nesting sanctuary. The posted signs told us not to enter and so we moved on to a plan B.

It was at the second location I took this picture of Dave standing next to a giant ponderosa pine. My tall and handsome husband looks so tiny, just a speck next to that massive conifer.

There are times when each of us probably feel small and insignificant. There has always been someone who is more capable, more attractive, more educated, more whatever…but this isn’t the way our heavenly Father sees us.

“Aren’t two sparrows sold for only a penny? But your Father knows when any one of them falls to the ground. 30 Even the hairs on your head are counted. 31 So don’t be afraid! You are worth much more than many sparrows.” Matthew 10:29-31 CEV

Our Father knows the exact number of the hairs on our head and each day that number changes. He is invested in our well-being and the prosperity of our souls. We are not insignificant to Him.

“But the Lord says, ‘Can a woman forget her baby?  Can she forget the child who came from her body? Even if she can forget her children, I cannot forget you. 16 I drew a picture of you on my hand. You are always before my eyes.'” Isaiah 49:15-16 ERV

A changing point in my walk with Christ came when I quit trying to get God to love me and realized that His love for me is unconditional and it will never end. The Bible showed me that He loved me when I was a sinner and now that He has given me right standing with Him, He loves me still.

“Christ died for us when we were unable to help ourselves. We were living against God, but at just the right time Christ died for us. 7 Very few people will die to save the life of someone else, even if it is for a good person. Someone might be willing to die for an especially good person. 8 But Christ died for us while we were still sinners, and by this God showed how much he loves us.” Romans 5:6-8 ERV

“Anyone who belongs to Christ is a new person. The past is forgotten, and everything is new. 18 God has done it all! He sent Christ to make peace between himself and us, and he has given us the work of making peace between himself and others…21 Christ never sinned! But God treated him as a sinner, so Christ could make us acceptable to God.” II Corinthians 5:17-18, 21 CEV

The Father knew it was impossible for me to measure up to His standard, so He sent His Son to provide a way for me to be in right standing with Him. Christ died for me, for us, so that we could experience the amazing love and grace of God. Christ made us acceptable!

Our Father never sees us as to insignificant or small to be a recipient of His love!

I Was Lost…

and now I’m found!

What a day. It was a normal day until we heard the message come across our walkie-talkies. Little boy in one of our campsites was missing!

Our hearts sank as we requested more information – name, age, what was he wearing. Any pertinent medical issues. As we were waiting for the answers we had already begun to walk toward the forest behind his campsite and above the lake.

It seemed as if the entire campground had moved into action. We were scrambling over boulders and through the trees, calling his name. Hoping to hear a reply. Praying for his safety and a quick discovery as to his where abouts.

And after what seemed an eternity of searching, the call came, “He’s been found!” And he’s ok.

Thank you Lord!!

When the search began, my friend and I had talked to his mom. She asked, “are you looking for my little boy”. She was so anxious. When he had been found we talked to his grandmother. She brought her grandson around to show us all he was ok and to thank us for our search. She said, “I knew the Lord was watching over him”.

The emotion, the concerted effort of the campers and the successful end of the search reminded me of the way our heavenly Father is always searching for His lost children.

“Then Jesus told them this story: 4 “Suppose one of you has 100 sheep, but one of them gets lost. What will you do? You will leave the other 99 sheep there in the field and go out and look for the lost sheep. You will continue to search for it until you find it. 5 And when you find it, you will be very happy. You will carry it 6 home, go to your friends and neighbors and say to them, ‘Be happy with me because I found my lost sheep!’ 7 In the same way, I tell you, heaven is a happy place when one sinner decides to change.” Luke 15:3-7 ERV

The Father is full of compassion; He makes a way so that no one needs to be lost. He sends those who search for the lost – they may be your neighbors, a family member, friends or perhaps strangers in a campground.

“Jesus said to Zacchaeus, “Today you and your family have been saved, because you are a true son of Abraham. 10  The Son of Man came to look for and to save people who are lost.” Luke 19:9-10 CEV

Zacchaeus went to a parade and ended up with Jesus coming to his home for lunch and this changed his entire life.

There is no moment so dark that the light of God’s love cannot penetrate it; there is no forest so dense that presence of the Father can’t provide a way out. There is no mind so entangled in depression and anxiety that the peace of God cannot restore it.

Jesus came to seek and save the lost! Let the words of the old hymn encourage you today. Amazing grace how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me. I was once lost but now I’m found, was blind but now I see.
