Things Seem Backwards

I got to thinking about my childhood. The things we did, the fun we had. Things kids don’t get to do today.

We played hide-n-seek in the street after dark. Dad didn’t call my cell, he just whistled and I knew to check-in. I played outside with friends, not online. If I didn’t eat what mom made, I didn’t eat. Hand sanitizer didn’t exist, but I got my mouth washed out with soap a few times for lying. Mom had a paddle and knew how to use it. It was ok for the other neighborhood mothers to scold me if you did something wrong.

I drank water out of a hose, rode in the back seat without a car seat or seat belt. Went hunting when I was 10, walked two miles from my house to the swimming pool with my sister in the summer time.

I lived by the rules of our home, had chores that needed to be done, learned to be honest and most of all, I was taught to respect adults – those in authority.

Why this walk down memory lane this morning?

It came from reading in the book of Proverbs.

“My son, do not forget my teaching. Let your heart keep my words. ²For they will add to you many days and years of life and peace. ³Do not let kindness and truth leave you. Tie them around your neck. Write them upon your heart. ⁴So you will find favor and good understanding in the eyes of God and man. ⁵Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not trust in your own understanding. ⁶Agree with Him in all your ways, and He will make your paths straight. ⁷Do not be wise in your own eyes. Fear the Lord and turn away from what is sinful. ⁸It will be healing to your body and medicine to your bones. ⁹Honor the Lord with your riches, and with the first of all you grow. ¹⁰Then your store-houses will be filled with many good things and your barrels will flow over with new wine.” Proverbs 3:1-10 NLV

“O sons, hear the teaching of a father. Listen so you may get understanding. ²For I give you good teaching. Do not turn away from it. ³When I was a much loved and only son of my mother and father, ⁴he taught me, saying, “Hold my words close to your heart. Keep my teachings and live. ⁵Get wisdom and understanding. Do not forget or turn away from the words of my mouth.” Proverbs 4:1-5 NLV

We owe it to our children and grandchildren to teach them respect. Part of their learning will come from our words and part of it will come from the way we live our lives.

We have a commission from the Lord to speak to their hearts, giving them instruction in wisdom and teaching them God’s word. More important that the exterior precautions we take for their safety is the way we teach them to guard their hearts.

“Keep your heart pure for out of it are the important things of life.” Proverbs 4:23 NLV

Drink from the hose, it’s fun. But also take time to drink from the living water of God’s word!

Raising Davids

Can you imagine how hard it must have been to raise godly children in the days of Jesse?

Jesse was David’s father and he had six other sons as well. The Israelites were living in constant conflict. Nations came against them on every side. They were only a few generations removed from the exodus of Egypt and already they were forgetting some of the miracles that God had done to bring them to this place.

In all of this the Lord saw David, a young shepherd, and selected him to be the next king of Israel. What He saw wasn’t someone of great stature or strength, it wasn’t wealth and prestige. No, it was a humble and believing heart.

David was a young man who spent time tending his father’s sheep while his brothers went off to fight the battles under the leadership of King Saul, but it was David whom the Lord chose.

“But the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.’…And the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David from that day on.” I Samuel 16:7, 13 NLT

The Bible tells us that David was a man whose heart was for God. David had to learn his faith filled beginnings at home. He learned to listen to the voice of God and obey.

As parents and grandparents, we have a responsibility to raise our children to hear and know the voice of God. Each person has a divine plan for their life. God has a purpose for each of us to fulfill. Some will be inventors, teachers, leaders of industry, preachers, mothers, doctors, pilots, farmers, fishermen, giant slayers but all have a calling.

“For I know the plans I have for you,’ says the Lord, ‘plans for well-being and not for trouble, to give you a future and a hope.” Jeremiah 29:11 NLT

We have the responsibility to pray for our children and ask the Lord to show us how to help them grow into young people who will honor and serve Him. We need to encourage them in the areas where they show natural talent and passion. Each day reminding them that the Lord has a unique plan for them, and He will strengthen them to fulfill it.

When everyone else stood back, shaking in their sandals, David moved forward toward the enemy.

“…Goliath, the Philistine champion from Gath, came out from the Philistine ranks. Then David heard him shout his usual taunt to the army of Israel. ²⁴As soon as the Israelite army saw him, they began to run away in fright.” I Samuel 17:23-24 NLT

“I have done this to both lions and bears, and I’ll do it to this pagan Philistine, too, for he has defied the armies of the living God! ³⁷The Lord who rescued me from the claws of the lion and the bear will rescue me from this Philistine!” I Samuel 17:34-37 NLT

That giant was no match for young David who moved forward in obedience to God. David knew the Lord had made a promise to Israel to protect them, so he trusted God to keep His word.

Who are the Davids’ in your life? Help raise them to honor and obey the Lord.

In My Life

This morning is a time to reflect on my years as a mother. 46 years to be exact.

Dave and I have three great kids and I am blessed to be mom to them and their mates. I am also blessed to be Besta (grandma) to five and great grandma to one more. My heart is full!

My children have seen me in my moments of greatest weakness, they know my inadequacies and some of my failures but they also know that I can be strong and relentless. They know that I depend upon the Lord, His word and the power of prayer.

There is a chorus* we used to sing in our church 35+ years ago and it came to mind this morning when I was thinking about my life as a mother.

“In My Life, Lord, Be Glorified, Be Glorified
In My Life, Lord, Be Glorified Today.”

Only two little lines but they are life changing. Whatever we do should be honor to the Father.

“Do you have the gift of speaking? Then speak as though God himself were speaking through you. Do you have the gift of helping others? Do it with all the strength and energy that God supplies. Then everything you do will bring glory to God through Jesus Christ. All glory and power to him forever and ever! Amen.” I Peter 4:11 NLT

If someone were to ask my children to tell them something about their Mom I hope they would say “My mom loves the Lord”. That would be the highest compliment.

Moms, we don’t need to be perfect – we can’t be. In our humanity, we should show our children that we love them, unconditionally, just like the Father loves us. They should know that we will be there to help them in any situation because the Father is always there for us.

We don’t need to preach at them, instead we need to live a life where they see our dependence and trust is in the Lord. Living for Jesus is the example we should be setting and when we fail in that, they should see us repent and not make excuses.

Pray for their friends, their careers, their well-being. We can trust the Father with every area of their lives. Pray for them as infants, toddlers, school-age, stepping out on their own. Pray for them if they are rebellious. Pray for them always!

Moms, this is my Mother’s Day prayer for you:

“So we keep on praying for you, asking our God to enable you to live a life worthy of his call. May he give you the power to accomplish all the good things your faith prompts you to do. ¹²Then the name of our Lord Jesus will be honored because of the way you live, and you will be honored along with him. This is all made possible because of the grace of our God and Lord, Jesus Christ.” II Thessalonians 1:11-12 NLT

Over the River

We took Sam and Kristine back to their Mom, Dad and baby sister yesterday. The final stop of a wonderful weekend was at Dairy Queen for a chocolate Dilly Bar and a Cherry dipped cone. (just sorry I forgot to get pictures of that)

Yum!

Driving back home, Dave and I started talking about our grandparents and special memories we have from our childhood. He grew up with his grandparents, both sets, living in the same town while I didn’t. He got to see them every weekend for special times of Saturday night at the movies, sleepovers and root beer floats. I got to see my grandparents every few years and only for brief visits. I guess that’s why it’s so important to us to make the memories that we can with our grandchildren.

The words of a song came to mind last night as I was sitting on the couch reliving moments from the weekend.

Over the river and through the wood
To Grandfather’s house we go.
The horse knows the way
To carry the sleigh
Through white and drifted snow.

Over the river and through the wood —
Now Grandmother’s cap I spy!
Hurrah for fun!
Is the pudding done?
Hurray for the pumpkin pie!

These are only a couple of the verses from a poem written in 1844 by Lydia Child. Each verse bursts with the excitement of a child getting to see Grandfather and Grandmother on Thanksgiving.

There was a time when Dave and I lived in an area where our children and grandchildren had to travel through the white and drifted snow. Those were days of special memories with our oldest two grandchildren, grandchildren who now have families of their own. Times of sledding, tromping through the snow, cutting our own Christmas tree, hot chocolate and cinnamon rolls. Special memories, indeed!

However, I hope the greatest memories we are creating for our grandchildren are of Dave and I – our love for each other, our love for them and our love for the Lord! I remember my grandfather reaching across the breakfast table and taking my grandmother’s hand as they prayed before a meal. Nothing is more special.

“So commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these words of mine. Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders. ¹⁹Teach them to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up. ²⁰Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates,” Deuteronomy 11:18-20 NLT

We should take every opportunity we have to tell our children and grandchildren we love them. Show them they are special and pray for them daily. That’s a foundation and a heritage that all of us can give – it requires no money but it brings lasting rewards.

“Father, we cover our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren with Your love and grace. May they grow in relationship with You – may they see that no one loves them more or has any greater plans for their success than You. Keep them safe and may they show Your love to the world around them. In Jesus name. Amen”

Write a note, send an email, make a call – tell your grandchildren how much you love them and that they are a blessing.

Children Are A Blessing

A few weeks back I received a text request from our oldest granddaughter. She asked if Dave and I would write letters to her daughter, our first great granddaughter; she wants them to go in her baby book. We were honored. It isn’t something that we could quickly scribble down on a sheet of paper. This letter would be special, well-thought, it had to convey the love we feel in our heart.

Yesterday was free of projects and so I was able to pray and write a letter of blessing. I’ve only seen pictures of this sweet little angel but she has captured my heart. I am truly blessed. I feel that way about all of my children, grandchildren and now our great grandchild.

As a parent my greatest desire is for my children to love the Lord and have His Word as the foundation of their lives. My opinions, successes and failures in life, my life experience, have no real value unless they are based on the word of God. That is the only sure foundation!

“How can a young person live a pure life? By obeying your word. 10 I try with all my heart to serve you. Help me obey your commands. 11 I study your teachings very carefully so that I will not sin against you. 12 LORD, you are worthy of praise! Teach me your laws. 13 I will repeat the laws we have heard from you. 14 I enjoy following your rules as much as others enjoy great riches. 15 I will study your instructions. I will give thought to your way of life.
16 I enjoy your laws. I will not forget your word.” Psalm 119:9-16 ERV

These are the words of King David. As a young man he grew up trusting the Word of God. He found strength, wisdom and earned favor with those who were his superiors but living what he learned from God’s word. Then he had a few years where he trusted in himself and his station in life. He failed in his personal life and he failed his children. It didn’t take him long to repent, he was restored and his life became an example of godliness again.

His son, Solomon, became king following David’s death. It is said that he was the wisest and wealthiest man to have ever lived. He gave this instruction to his children.

“These are the proverbs of Solomon, the son of David and king of Israel. 2 They will help you learn to be wise, to accept correction, and to understand wise sayings. 3 They will teach you to develop your mind in the right way. You will learn to do what is right and to be honest and fair. 4 These proverbs will make even those without education smart. They will teach young people what they need to know and how to use what they have learned. 5 Even the wise could become wiser by listening to these proverbs. They will gain understanding and learn to solve difficult problems. 6 These sayings will help you understand proverbs, stories with hidden meanings, words of the wise, and other difficult sayings. 7 Knowledge begins with fear and respect for the LORD, but stubborn fools hate wisdom and refuse to learn.8 My son, listen to your father when he corrects you, and don’t ignore what your mother teaches you. 9 What you learn from your parents will bring you honor and respect, like a crown or a gold medal.” Proverbs 1: 1-8 ERV

As parents and grandparents, let’s keep the word of God before our children and grandchildren. Let it be our instruction to them. We don’t need to preach AT them but live the Word of God before them.

Pray with them – Pray for them. Plant God’s word in their lives and watch it grow and bring a harvest of good for them. They are worth it!
