The Aroma of Thanksgiving

You probably think I’m a bit early to be talking about Thanksgiving dinner and you would be right. It’s not the aroma of turkey roasting, rolls baking or even fresh pies sitting on the kitchen counter.

The aroma of thanksgiving is that of a thankful heart.

“I am grateful that God always makes it possible for Christ to lead us to victory. God also helps us spread the knowledge about Christ everywhere, and this knowledge is like the smell of perfume. ” II Corinthians 2:14 CEV

When we center our focus on Christ and follow His lead He will always – ALWAYS – lead us to victory. With those victories comes our testimony of God’s goodness, His power and His provision. Our testimonies bring the knowledge of Christ to the world and that knowledge brings the smell like a sweet perfume.

So, we have the opportunity to be God’s perfume. Thanksgiving in our hearts is an aroma that draws the world to Christ.

In the Old Testament, when a sacrifice or an offering of thanksgiving was made the priest also burned incense to make the sacrifice smell sweet.

The Apostle Paul tells us that we are to give our bodies as a living sacrifice to the Lord.

“Dear friends, God is good. So I beg you to offer your bodies to him as a living sacrifice, pure and pleasing. That’s the most sensible way to serve God. ²Don’t be like the people of this world, but let God change the way you think. Then you will know how to do everything that is good and pleasing to him.” Romans 12:1-2 CEV

We give our lives to Him to be molded and used for His honor. As we thank Him for all He has done and the purpose He gives our life, we are a living sacrifice that is pure and pleasing.

The Lord has so many good things in store for us. He created us for good things. He’s not looking to withhold blessings from us, He desires to overflow us with blessings.

“ I pray that God will be kind to you and will let you live in perfect peace! May you keep learning more and more about God and our Lord Jesus. ³We have everything we need to live a life that pleases God. It was all given to us by God’s own power, when we learned that he had invited us to share in his wonderful goodness. ⁴God made great and marvelous promises, so that his nature would become part of us. Then we could escape our evil desires and the corrupt influences of this world.” II Peter 1:2-4 CEV

Take time to let those verses sink in. We have everything we need to live a life that pleases God. Not by our own power but by His. He gave us great and marvelous promises. Now that’s a reason to be thankful. It’s knowledge like this, that God wants us sharing with others.

God doesn’t expect us to live a life that pleases Him on our own. No, He gave us His promise that He would empowered us for the life He called us too.

“God planned for us to do good things and to live as he has always wanted us to live. That’s why he sent Christ to make us what we are.” Ephesians 2:10 CEV

When obstacles, trials and difficult times come, and they will, let’s refrain from complaining and worrying. Instead, let us be secure in the knowledge that God has provided victory for us through His power and His promises.

That way, we will be the ones who are the sweet smelling perfume of thankfulness.

The Sweet Fragrance of Praise

Chanel – White Diamonds – Giorgio – Versace – perfumes! All have a wonderful odor. Just one drop, and a room will be completely filled with fragrance.

Have you ever experienced that?

Just one little dab of expensive perfume on a cloth or piece of clothing will bring a wonderful bouquet to all the other clothes in your closet or drawer. Or maybe you’ve had the experience of walking past someone, you pick up on the sweet smell of perfume and it reminds you of a loved one or a special place and time.

“I am grateful that God ALWAYS (emphasis mine) makes it possible for Christ to lead us to victory. God also helps us spread the knowledge about Christ everywhere, and this knowledge is like the smell of perfume.” II Corinthians 2;14 CEV

The Apostle Paul tells us that we should be thankful because God ALWAYS causes us to triumph in Christ. ALWAYS!! Not just occasionally, not just half the time but ALWAYS!

And then He helps us spread the message of Christ and His victory everywhere like a sweet perfume. We’re not the perfume, the message of Christ is. We’re simply the article that transports the aroma.

This reminds me of the woman who broke the box of expensive perfume and poured it on Jesus. People were upset because she had wasted such a costly ointment but everywhere Jesus went, He left a sweet-smelling fragrance and there was no denying that they had been in His presence.

Are we leaving people with the ability to sense that they have been in the presence of the Lord?

“You are God’s dear children, so try to be like him. ²Live a life of love. Love others just as Christ loved us. He gave himself for us—a sweet-smelling offering and sacrifice to God.” Ephesians 5:1-2 ERV

Talking about His victories in our lives isn’t bragging on us and our great feats; it’s simply leaving the fragrance of Christ for others to enjoy.

“In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” I Thessalonians 5:18 KJV

Be grateful, be thankful, leave a sweet smell!

Fragrance of Love

Take a deep breath. What do you smell? Is it sweet and inviting? Hopefully, it isn’t harsh and offensive. Sweet and inviting is better, much much better.

Years ago, my mother moved to Dillon, MT where Dave and I lived. Right outside the back door of her duplex was a tall lilac bush. Each time she opened the door to walk out she would be greeted with the smell of lilac. She told me that she remembered being a small girl and smelling lilacs at her home. That smell, that sweet odor, reminded her of home!

Have you ever walked through a rose garden when it’s in bloom or sat on a bench surrounded by gardenias? Our sense of smell is very strong. It can warn us of danger, like a skunk or fire, or it can bring us comfort and consolation.

In the Old Testament, offerings of thanksgiving to God were to be a mixture of fine flour, olive oil and incense. When they were burned by the priest, the offering had a sweet odor that was pleasing to the Lord.

The Apostle Paul tells us we are to offer our bodies, our lives, to the Lord as a living sacrifice. So this begs the question, what fragrance does my life emit?

Is my life pure and pleasing? Is it one with the sweet smell of thanksgiving? Do I spend more time thanking God for His goodness and His love than I do complaining about how things could/should/would be better “if only”?

As Christians – Christ like ones – our lives should be an offering that pleases the Father.

“Do as God does. After all, you are his dear children. 2 Let love be your guide. Christ loved us and offered his life for us as a sacrifice that pleases God.” Ephesians 5:1-2 CEV

We are to be like Christ and our lives should be like His, a sacrifice that pleases God. Just as the priests presented the sacrifices to the Lord and it pleased Him, we should offer our lives as a pleasing sacrifice.

It’s not only the Father who notices that the fragrance of our lives, those around us will notice too.

“I am grateful that God always makes it possible for Christ to lead us to victory. God also helps us spread the knowledge about Christ everywhere, and this knowledge is like the smell of perfume. 15 In fact, God thinks of us as a perfume that brings Christ to everyone. ” II Corinthians 2:14-15 CEV

During this week of Easter I desire that my life smells sweet with praise and thanksgiving to the Father and forgiveness and love to those I meet. I desire to release the sweet fragrance of love.
