Let It Shine

Last night I went out after dark to take inventory of our path lights. We live on the edge of a wash so it’s important that things are well lit. We don’t want anyone getting too close to the edge.

I told Dave that we have four lights which need to be replaced. He said he would check them because sometimes they just need to have the sensors wiped clean and they’ll be ok.

When he said that I was reminded of my collection of oil lamps that I used on a regular basis. They weren’t just for decoration; they provided much needed light when we lost power. I cleaned the chimneys of those lamps regularly, so they were always ready to give light to the room.

It made me think – do I need to have my sensors wiped or my chimney cleaned?

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 5:14-15 ESV

Grumbling, murmuring, complaining, criticizing, fault finding and finger pointing will mess up our sensors and muck up our chimneys. Our light will be diminished, instead of protecting others from getting too close to the edge of danger.

Gratitude, thankfulness, appreciation, kindness, compassion and constructive instruction light the way for others to give glory to our heavenly Father.

“God once said, ‘Let light shine out of the darkness!’ And this is the same God who made his light shine in our hearts to let us know that his own divine greatness is seen in the face of Christ. 7 We have this treasure from God, but we are only like clay jars that hold the treasure. This is to show that the amazing power we have is from God, not from us.” II Corinthians 4:6-7 ERV

God has placed His treasure of light in us. Take inventory. If necessary, wipe off the sensors or clean the chimneys.

He wants us to shine brightly with His love.

The Power of Light

When we were at our son’s we slept in the V-Berth. It’s that area at the front of the boat where the hull is v-shaped. It was arranged with two nice, comfy single beds. There was one concern though, it was about 3′ from the mattress to the floor. Knowing that Dave and I both have to get up at least once during the night, our son provided a light that would help us see but not be so bright that it kept us from sleeping.

Thank you Son!

This morning, I would like to talk to you about lights.

There are all sorts of lights bulbs. Dim ones, bright ones, incandescent, florescent, LED, solar, motion sensor. Lights for heating, for reading, for driving, for rescue. There’s no point in arguing over which is the best, because it’s the one we need at the moment. But none of them are effective without a power source.

“The Scriptures say, ‘God commanded light to shine in the dark.’ Now God is shining in our hearts to let you know that his glory is seen in Jesus Christ. 7 We are like clay jars in which this treasure is stored. The real power comes from God and not from us. 8 We often suffer, but we are never crushed. Even when we don’t know what to do, we never give up. 9 In times of trouble, God is with us, and when we are knocked down, we get up again.” II Corinthians 4:6-9 CEV

Jesus told His followers that we are the light of the world.

“ You are the light of the world. You cannot hide a city that is on a mountain. 15 Men do not light a lamp and put it under a basket. They put it on a table so it gives light to all in the house.” Matthew 5:14-15 NLV

He also said:

“ While I am in the world, I am the Light of the world.” John 9:5 NLV

While Jesus was in the world, He was the light. But when He went to heaven, we who are His followers are now the carriers of that light to those who are in darkness.

It’s not a competition as to who is the bigger and brighter light. Not every situation requires a flood light, sometimes the best bulb for the job is a night light. The important thing is that we are ready to shine whenever needed.

So our job is a simple one – stayed connected to our source of power, Jesus Christ. Don’t give up, don’t give in. There is no power shortage when we are in Christ Jesus!

The Light Within

When I was a young girl, we lived in Northern New Mexico. I loved the missions; the adobe style houses and the luminarias at Christmas. They fascinated me. Candles in bags, lining the pathways – giving light at Christmas.

Years later in my early thirties, the memory of those special lights brought meaning to the Bible verses I was reading.

“The god who rules this world has blinded the minds of unbelievers. They cannot see the light, which is the good news about our glorious Christ, who shows what God is like. 5 We are not preaching about ourselves. Our message is that Jesus Christ is Lord. He also sent us to be your servants. 6  The Scriptures say, ‘God commanded light to shine in the dark.’ Now God is shining in our hearts to let you know that his glory is seen in Jesus Christ. 7 We are like clay jars in which this treasure is stored. The real power comes from God and not from us.” II Corinthians 4:4-7 CEV

We are luminarias to the world!

When we allow the Lord to work in us and we work with Him, we bring His light to those around us.

Jesus talked about this with his followers.

“You are the light that shines for the world to see. You are like a city built on a hill that cannot be hidden. 15 People don’t hide a lamp under a bowl. They put it on a lampstand. Then the light shines for everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, you should be a light for other people. Live so that they will see the good things you do and praise your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:14-16 ERV

When Moses went up on Mt. Sinai to receive the 10 Commandments from the Lord he was engulfed by God’s glory. When he came down from the mountain his face was illuminated. He had been in the presence of God.

“When Moses came down from Mount Sinai, he carried the two stone tablets of the agreement. Because he had talked with the Lord, his face was shining, but he did not know it. 30 Aaron and all the people of Israel saw that Moses’ face was shining bright. So they were afraid to go near him.” Exodus 334:29-30 ERV

Moses covered his face to keep the people from being fearful, but they knew he had been in the presence of God. The Apostle Paul talks about this and makes this comparison to our lives.

“And our faces are not covered. We all show the Lord’s glory, and we are being changed to be like him. This change in us brings more and more glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.” II Corinthians 3:18 ERV

We are being changed to be like Him!

Just like those luminarias that lit the path to the mission at Christmas, we are to light the path that leads the world to Jesus.

Add A Little Twinkle

The hardest part of living in a “tiny home” is being quiet in the mornings when we have the littles here for a sleepover.

Their play/sleeping room is the loft, open to the living room and kitchen below. That’s where I sit each morning to read, pray and write. Not wanting to disturb them I try to sit as quietly as possible. No lights on except a night light that will aid them on their descent down the stairs and the glow of my laptop monitor. The only noise is the sound of the coffeemaker and my fingers on the keyboard.

We had a wonderful day yesterday. Turkey was a little slow cooking, but we had more food than we could possibly eat, the weather was perfect, the family time was wonderful, and the kids decorated the tree while Kaci and I cleaned up the kitchen and put away the leftovers. (Forgot to get the decorating pictures from Stephen but I’ll do that today).

The tree and the nativity on the back deck twinkled all night long. The kids did a great job.

The holy-days (holidays) are a wonderful opportunity to let the light of Jesus shine through us to the world.

For those who are alone, it can be overwhelming. Movies and television specials show happy families, neighbors taking care of one another, love and generosity. Yet, many feel empty, frustrated and lonely.

That’s where we come in. I encourage you to be mindful of the reason we celebrate, it’s Jesus. Let His light shine through us to the world. His birth was announced as “good news to all people”.

“Do everything without complaining or arguing 15 so that you will be blameless and pure, children of God without any fault. But you are living with evil people all around you, who have lost their sense of what is right. Among those people you shine like lights in a dark world, 16 and you offer them the teaching that gives life...” Philippians 2:14-16a ERV

Now go shine and add a little twinkle to those in your world.

Don’t Stumble in the Dark

Yesterday we were able to get away and visit dear friends! It’s such a joy to spend time with them and their family. We were able to stay the night and will have more time with them this morning.

It’s always interesting when we stay some place we haven’t been before. Don’t want to get up in the night and run into something or be lost in the dark.

You walked carefully across the room, stubbing your toes more than once, wishing there were a night light that could give you some assistance in your journey. I have. As a child, Dave was a sleep walker and would wake up lost so needless to say we have night lights in our home. Very helpful indeed.

When we travel now we keep a night light packed in our bag just to prevent that very thing.

But what about those times when we need a “night light” as we walk through life?

“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. 106 I have sworn, and I will perform it, that I will keep thy righteous judgments.” Psalm 119:105-106 KJV

It would be silly to ask someone for direction when we don’t know the way and then ignore what they say. The same holds true for mental and spiritual direction in our lives.

“Lord, your rules are wonderful. That is why I follow them. 130 As people understand your word, it brings light to their lives. Your word makes even simple people wise.” Psalm 119:128-130 ERV

When we have God’s word to light the way and give us direction, we don’t need to be second guessing or ignoring the instruction we receive. When we walk in the light, we save ourselves from unnecessary bumps and bruises and our way is smoother.

“God is strong and can keep you from falling. He can bring you before his glory without any wrong in you and give you great joy. ” Jude 1:24 ERV

Walk well today; walk in the light.

Navigating in the Dark

Have you ever tried to walk in the dark? In someone else’s house? Or on a dark road in nature? It can be scary, unnerving at best. It’s always helpful and encouraging to have someone there to shed some light on the path.

I think that’s how Joseph and Mary must have felt. They were navigating through the darkness of tradition and propriety. Old Testament law said that the penalty of sexual intercourse before marriage was death and at the very least, worthy of being ostracized by the family.

Enter Joseph.

“This is how Jesus Christ was born. A young woman named Mary was engaged to Joseph from King David’s family. But before they were married, she learned that she was going to have a baby by God’s Holy Spirit. 19 Joseph was a good man and did not want to embarrass Mary in front of everyone. So he decided to quietly call off the wedding.

20 While Joseph was thinking about this, an angel from the Lord appeared to him in a dream. The angel said, “Joseph, the baby that Mary will have is from the Holy Spirit. Go ahead and marry her. 21  Then after her baby is born, name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins. 22 So the Lord’s promise came true, just as the prophet had said, 23  “A virgin will have a baby boy, and he will be called Immanuel,” which means ‘God is with us.’” Matthew 1:18-23 CEV

There is no cross without a manger. No Easter without Christmas.

“Then the angel told Mary, “Don’t be afraid! God is pleased with you, 31  and you will have a son. His name will be Jesus. 32  He will be great and will be called the Son of God Most High.” Luke 1:30-32 CEV

“ All at once an angel came down to them from the Lord, and the brightness of the Lord’s glory flashed around them. The shepherds were frightened. 10 But the angel said, “Don’t be afraid! I have good news for you, which will make everyone happy. 11 This very day in King David’s hometown a Savior was born for you. He is Christ the Lord.” Luke 2:9-11 CEV

The angels came with a message, with direction, with hope and peace. Generally, their first words were “don’t be afraid”. Fear needs to be dispelled so that we can comprehend the rest of the message.

A child, a Savior, the Son of God is born. He IS Christ the Lord and He WILL save His people from their sins!

Jewish babies were born all the time, but none were like this one. He came from God’s right hand and He was miraculously conceived. He had a purpose.

“A man named Simeon lived in Jerusalem. He was a good man who was devoted to God…26 The Holy Spirit told him that he would not die before he saw the Messiah from the Lord…33 Jesus’ father and mother were amazed at what Simeon said about him. 34 Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, ‘Many Jews will fall and many will rise because of this boy. He will be a sign from God that some will not accept. 35 So the secret thoughts of many will be made known. And the things that happen will be painful for you—like a sword cutting through your heart.’” Luke 2:25-33 ERV

Here we have the young parents and the old, faithful servant of God. Young parents who have the responsibility of raising God’s Son. The old man, who knows how this child’s life will end. God is faithful to them both.

He is also faithful to us. He has promised to never leave or abandon us; He will shed light on our path, even in the darkest hours, and will provide light for our journey.

“…Everything that was created 4  received its life from him, and his life gave light to everyone…” John 1:3-4 CEV

Because of the cross we never have to navigate the darkness alone!

Light in the Darkness

What do you do on an Arizona afternoon when it’s too hot to go outside and work on anything?

Well, if you’re retired, like Dave and I, you have a nice lunch and watch a movie. Yesterday’s movie is titled, Unbroken. It’s based on the true story of a young man who excelled in long distance running, qualified for the Olympics, enlisted in the Army in WWII, was a bombardier, spent over a month in a life raft in the Pacific, was rescued by Japanese and spent the rest of the war as a prisoner.

It wasn’t a light-hearted Hallmark movie.

At one point, he was imprisoned in a cell that had no light. I don’t know how many days he was there, but the movie showed him screaming out in the darkness. It was almost more than he could handle. This is what I was thinking about this morning when I woke up.

The darkness. Fighting the darkness.

“You save those who are suffering, but You bring low those who have pride in their eyes. 28 You make my lamp bright. The Lord my God lights my darkness.” Psalm 18:27-28 NLV

“The Lord is my light and the One Who saves me. Whom should I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life. Of whom should I be afraid? 2 When sinful men, and all who hated me, came against me to destroy my flesh, they tripped and fell. 3 Even if an army gathers against me, my heart will not be afraid. Even if war rises against me, I will be sure of You.” Psalm 27:1-3 NLV

I don’t believe I will ever experience that type of darkness but, in life, we all face circumstantial darkness. For some its prejudice while others face the death of a loved one. Some face the relational darkness of loneliness and depression, many fall into the dark place of long-term illness and pain. And then there is the dark prison cell of financial destruction.

No matter the darkness, each one of us has the promise of God that He will be our light in the darkness! Amen and amen.

Going over all this I heard the words of a song I sang as a child: I Know Who Holds Tomorrow.

1 I don’t know about tomorrow,
I just live from day to day.
I don’t borrow from its sunshine,
For its skies may turn to gray.
I don’t worry o’er the future,
For I know what Jesus said,
And today I’ll walk beside Him,
For He knows what is ahead.

Refrain:
Many things about tomorrow,
I don’t seem to understand;
But I know who holds tomorrow,
And I know who holds my hand.

3 I don’t know about tomorrow,
It may bring me poverty;
But the one who feeds the sparrow,
Is the one who stands by me.
And the path that be my portion,

But His presence goes before me,
And I’m covered with His blood. [Refrain]

I pray these words bring light to your dark places. Remember Jesus said, “I AM the light of the world”.

Christmas Lights

Christmas is a time for remembering and for sharing the joy of times spent together. This morning I will tell you another grandchild story.

Our youngest grandson was just over a year old when his mom and dad came to visit us in Rio Rico. Dave and our son-in-law went out to the desert for an afternoon of shooting while our daughter, grandson and I went to Tubac, an artisan community, to shop.

Every shop we went in was fascinating to Sam. He is so taken with Christmas lights, and he wasn’t disappointed as we went from store to store. He would stare at the pierced metal stars that hung from the ceilings and he loved the “balls” so big and brightly colored. Most of the time I carried him, so his mom was free to look through each shop. We laughed and giggled, and the love and excitement Sam felt. It worked its way into the hearts of the shop keepers and shoppers.

Christmas through the eyes of children. The wonderful, the excitement, the joy!

When I was in high school choir we sang a song, “Christmas Was Meant for Children”, made popular by Sandi Patty

With mistletoe and holly
And toys upon the tree
The stockings by the chimney
And hearts so full of joy
Old Santa’s riding through the snow
For every gift and boy

For Christmas was made in heaven

Those stars that captured Sam’s attention were a representation of the bright and shining star that led the wisemen to the Christ child. We place lights on our trees and outside our homes to give the warm glow of joy and love to all who pass by.

Our lives should be lights of love, joy and peace that will attract others to finding Christ. Jesus is our example of a life filled with light.

“Later, Jesus talked to the people again. He said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never live in darkness. They will have the light that gives life.” John 8:12 ERV

And then He gave us a command to be light.

“People don’t hide a lamp under a bowl. They put it on a lampstand. Then the light shines for everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, you should be a light for other people. Live so that they will see the good things you do and praise your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:15-16 ERV

Let’s wipe the dust off our bulbs, trim the wick in our lamp, and shine. Shine with Jesus for all the world to see!

Sitting in the Sun

Yesterday afternoon Dave and I took some time to go to the swimming pool. It was a beautiful afternoon; the sun was shining; the air was clear and the water was cool.

It was so relaxing just to sit there and soak in the warmth. I love the warmth – it’s comforting.

I remember the days when we lived in the Northwest. Up to that point in time I had never lived anywhere other than the Southwest. The cloudy, gray days of the Pacific Northwest far outweighed the days of sunshine. It was hard to adjust to. I must say I like the sunshine better than the clouds.

So, this morning those were the thoughts going through my mind. The warmer weather and the joy of living where we do brought a smile to my face. But it also brought some self-reflection.

“The Scriptures say, “God commanded light to shine in the dark.” Now God is shining in our hearts to let you know that his glory is seen in Jesus Christ. 7 We are like clay jars in which this treasure is stored. The real power comes from God and not from us.” II Corinthians 4:6-7 CEV

Our Father has placed His “son-light” within us. He desires for us to bring the warmth of His love to those around us.

“You are the light for the whole world. A city built on top of a hill cannot be hidden, 15  and no one lights a lamp and puts it under a clay pot. Instead, it is placed on a lampstand, where it can give light to everyone in the house.” Matthew 5:14-15 CEV

There was a song we sang in Sunday School when I was a little girl, “Jesus Wants Me for a Son Beam”. It goes something like this:

Jesus wants me for a sunbeam,
To shine for Him each day;
In every way try to please Him,
At home, at school, at play.
A sunbeam, a sunbeam,
Jesus wants me for a sunbeam;
A sunbeam, a sunbeam,
I’ll be a sunbeam for Him.

The simplicity of that message is the truth of the Bible.

“Father, each day I want to share the light of your love with the world”.

Spring Into Life

First Day of Spring!

Half the nation is still covered in snow and many places temperatures are below freezing but signs of Spring are popping up every where. When we lived in Washington State I became familiar with “bulbed” plants; tulips, hyacinth, crocus, daffodils.

The scent of the hyacinths is so fragrant. Yet, it’s the determination of the crocus that made them my favorite. When we moved to Idaho, unbeknown to me, I had some purple crocus right off the front porch. I still remember that first Spring morning when I went out and found them pushing up through the snow-covered ground.

Such determination. Such strength.

Imagine it. Lying dormant all winter, and then waking up with the urge to push up through the cap of soil and snow into the sunlight. Nature is wonderful. The Creator is amazing!

“Everything was made through him, and nothing was made without him. 4 In him there was life, and that life was a light for the people of the world. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not defeated it.” John 1:3-5 ERV

The same Creator who made the crocus and the hyacinths, made us. We are created in His image and have received our life through Him. He is the Son-light that warms the soil and sparks life in our hearts.

He is the light of the world – He replaces the darkness with His life-giving light that He places within us.

“We don’t tell people about ourselves. But we tell people that Jesus Christ is Lord, and we tell them that we are your servants for Jesus. 6 God once said, ‘Let light shine out of the darkness!’ And this is the same God who made his light shine in our hearts to let us know that his own divine greatness is seen in the face of Christ. 7 We have this treasure from God, but we are only like clay jars that hold the treasure. This is to show that the amazing power we have is from God, not from us.” II Corinthians 4:5-7 ERV

We receive our life and power from the transforming light of God’s unconditional, unending love.

It could be that it’s been a while since you felt truly alive. Anxiety may have been crushing you under its weight. Be like that little crocus, let the Son strengthen you, then the world we see that this amazing power we have comes from Him. It’s not of our own making.
