Beginning the Advent-ure

December 1st, the beginning of Advent. When our children were little, we had advent calendars, the countdown to Christmas and Jesus’ birthday. It was always about Jesus and the gifts we could give Him.

Now that they are grown, the emphasis is the same. However, a few things have changed. Instead of heading to the forest to cut a tree we went to Home Depot. The adventure wasn’t quite the same – instead of facing icy roads and a snow-covered mountain top we maneuvered the freeway and the parking lots.

But opening the box of ornaments and nativities brought back memories of years past. I could almost hear the laughter as I removed the angels from the boxes and hung them on the tree. Each one has stood the test of time – being moved from state to state, surviving the downsizing from large home on acreage to the tiny home in the desert.

This is another adventure that the Lord has led us on. No longer does the tree stand in the living room; this year it’s on the front porch.

But the things that haven’t changed are the eternal promises of God.

Those of you that know me well know I love the Word of God and believe it is to be taken literally. It’s the rock I stand on and has been my foundation through good times and the bad. The thing about the bad times, is when we’re standing on the Word we come through victorious.

My favorite verse in all the Bible is Numbers 23:19-20

God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good? 20Behold, I have received commandment to bless: and he hath blessed; and I cannot reverse it.”

If this verse isn’t true, then we can throw the rest of the Bible out the window.

Since the Bible is God’s word, we need to know that He cannot lie – so if it’s written, He’s holding Himself to it. God has spoken a blessing over those of us who have accepted Jesus as Savior and He’s not going back on it.

The law says we are under a curse for not always obeying it. But Christ took away that curse. He changed places with us and put himself under that curse. The Scriptures say, ‘Anyone who is hung on a tree is under a curse. 14 Because of what Jesus Christ did, the blessing God promised to Abraham was given to all people. Christ died so that by believing in him we could have the Spirit that God promised.” Galatians 3:13-14 ERV

Jesus took on the curses of sin, sickness, fear, failure, and all the rest so that we could walk in the blessings. See, what He has blessed can’t be reversed. Praise God!

Life with Christ is an amazing advent-ure!

The Father’s Gifts

When I woke up this morning, this verse was on my heart.

“If you then, being evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!” Matthew 7:11.

This word evil is a comparative word.

When comparing earthly fathers to God, the Father, the earthly fathers are comparatively evil. Sometimes our natural fathers will make a wrong decision or lose their tempers or display other “evil” character flaws but not God, the Father, His very nature is love.

His love is unconditional, He is never self-seeking, and He will never fail us.

I was blessed to have a very loving father and I miss him dearly. He was a living example to me of God’s love. Yes, he had his faults and shortcomings, but I always knew he loved me and that he would do all he could for me and our family. Some are not so blessed, and I understand that too – but regardless of how your natural father has treated you, God, the Father, always welcomes you with open arms and a heart full of love!

Every good and perfect gift comes down from the Father who created all the lights in the heavens. He is always the same and never makes dark shadows by changing.” James 1:17 CEV

He doesn’t promise one thing on one day and take it away the next. He is always the same. He is a promise keeper.

“God is no mere human! He doesn’t tell lies or change his mind. God always keeps his promises. 20 ‘My command from God was to bless these people, and there’s nothing I can do to change what he has done.'” Numbers 23:19-20 CEV

He has promised to give us every blessing that comes from heaven.

We have everything we need to live a life that pleases God. It was all given to us by God’s own power, when we learned he had invited us to share in his wonderful goodness. God made great and marvelous promises, so his nature would become part of us. Then we could escape our evil desires and the corrupt influences of this world.” II Peter 1:3-4 CEV

His great and precious promises are infused with His nature – love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, meekness, faith. His love never fails; it isn’t self-seeking or selfish. It isn’t vindictive or unforgiving. These are just some of the gifts He has given to us.

He’ll wipe away our tears, laugh with us in the good times and hold us close to protect us in the evil times.

He is a good, good Father!

Don’t Compromise

Don’t ever, ever, ever compromise on the Word of God!

It is the only thing that is infallible, faithful and true – it will never change and the only time it seems to be void of power is when we fail to believe it but even then, it does not change. God’s word is a firm foundation for all who will stand on it.

When I was thinking about this topic I did a search of “don’t compromise your faith”. The following list came up first thing.

To avoid compromising your faith:

  1. Be solidly committed to God’s ways.
  2. Actively grow in your relationship with Him.
  3. Learn His truths.
  4. Rely on His power to help you walk without compromise.
  5. Trust in the Lord and acknowledge Him in all your ways.

Good advice for any time or generation. These line up perfectly with Scripture.

“My son, pay attention to what I say. Listen closely to my words. 21 Don’t let them out of your sight. Never stop thinking about them. 22 These words are the secret of life and health to all who discover them. 23 Above all, be careful what you think because your thoughts control your life.

24 Don’t bend the truth or say things that you know are not right. 25 Keep your eyes on the path, and look straight ahead. 26 Make sure you are going the right way, and nothing will make you fall. 27 Don’t go to the right or to the left, and you will stay away from evil.” Proverbs 4:20-27 ERV

“God is not a man;  he will not lie. God is not a human being; his decisions will not change.
If he says he will do something, then he will do it. If he makes a promise, then he will do what he promised.” Numbers 23:19 ERV

“Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: 25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.” Matthew 7:24-25 KJV

and one final word of encouragement

“Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.” Matthew 24:35

God’s word is trustworthy – all the time. No matter the circumstances or situations God and His word do not change. Trust Him and don’t compromise!

God’s Love NEVER Fails

Absolutes! I love that God’s word is filled with absolutes. Always – All – Everyone – Whoever – Never. These are the words that jump off the page each time I read my Bible.

“Praise the Lord! He is goodGod’s love never fails. Praise the God of all gods. God’s love never fails. Praise the Lord of lords. God’s love never fails. Only God works great miracles. God’s love never fails. With wisdom he made the sky. God’s love never fails. The Lord stretched the earth over the ocean. God’s love never fails. He made the bright lights in the sky. God’s love never fails. He lets the sun rule each day. God’s love never fails. He lets the moon and the stars rule each night. God’s love never fails.” Psalm 136:1-9 CEV

God’s love never fails!

Our actions don’t determine God’s love for us. The Apostle Paul wrote that even when we were sinners and alienated from God He loved us. Jesus said, “For God SO loved the world, that He gave His only Son”.

God’s love never fails!

“But God showed how much he loved us by having Christ die for us, even though we were sinful.” Romans 5:8 CEV

I had someone tell me once, “I’m not sure I even believe in God”. I think my answer may have shocked them. I said, “That’s ok, God believes in you and if you ask Him to show you that He’s real, He will”.

He shows us His reality and His love on a daily basis. It’s in every sunrise and sunset; it’s in the stars and the oceans, and the ebb and flow of the waves.

Only God works great miracles. God’s love never fails.” Psalm 136:4

“God saw the trouble we were in. God’s love never fails. 24 He rescued us from our enemies.  God’s love never fails. 25 He gives food to all who live. God’s love never fails. 26 Praise God in heaven! God’s love never fails.” Psalm 136:23-26 CEV

There has never been a day in our lives that God hasn’t had love for us. He may not always be pleased with our actions, but He has never not loved us.

Praise God in heaven! God’s love never fails!!

Finding Strength

We all face hard times and discouraging circumstances. This morning, I was reminded to look up especially when we feel like hanging our heads and giving in. We need to look up in order to find the way out.

“The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.” Proverbs 18:10 KJV

God’s name is a place! His name means ever present, peace, healer, righteousness, provider, I AM!

Run into that place – run into God and find safety and peace; find help, find rest!

“Please listen, God, and answer my prayer! 2 I feel hopeless, and I cry out to you from a faraway land. Lead me to the mighty rock high above me. 3 You are a strong tower, where I am safe from my enemies. 4 Let me live with you forever and find protection under your wings, my God.” Psalm 61:1-4 CEV

I’m not sure why this is the message for today. I just kept hearing the Father say, “I’m the way out – I’m the provider – I’m the deliverer. I AM all that is needed.”

“I look to the hills! Where will I find help? 2 It will come from the Lord, who created heaven and earth. The Lord is your protector, and he won’t go to sleep or let you stumble. The protector of Israel doesn’t doze or ever get drowsy. The Lord is your protector, there at your right side to shade you from the sun. You won’t be harmed by the sun during the day or by the moon at night. The Lord will protect you and keep you safe from all dangers. The Lord will protect you now and always wherever you go.” Psalm 121 CEV

This is our confidence – this is our strength. These are the words of our Father, the one who never lies!

Redeemed – At the Cross

Dave and I try to find something uplifting or humorous to watch before going to bed.

Last night we listened to several videos which featured “Jelly Roll”. For those of you from my generation who may find it hard to look at someone who is tatted like Jelly Roll and not be critical, let me say what the Lord told Samuel:

“When they had come, Samuel looked at Eliab and thought, ‘For sure he is the Lord’s chosen one who is standing before Him.”’But the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Do not look at the way he looks on the outside or how tall he is, because I have not chosen him. For the Lord does not look at the things man looks at. A man looks at the outside of a person, but the Lord looks at the heart.‘” I Samuel 16:6-7 NLV

This man has a message of hope and redemption in Jesus Christ. It’s a message of praise.

We all need to come to the realization of what our Savior, Jesus Christ, did for us on the cross. We each have had our heartaches and pain. Not one of us has lived a life free of disappointment. Not even Jesus.

In our darkest moments the Father is there. In our deepest pain He reaches out to lift us up. In our most debilitating trial, He redeems our life. He gives us beauty for ashes, joy in the morning and peace in the storm.

“But now the Lord Who made you, O Jacob, and He Who made you, O Israel, says, “Do not be afraid. For I have bought you and made you free. I have called you by name. You are Mine! When you pass through the waters, I will be with you. When you pass through the rivers, they will not flow over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned. The fire will not destroy you. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, Who saves you. ” Isaiah 43:1-3 NLV

Raise your hands in worship to the Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, who covered our sin at the cross and the Father who gave His Son to pay the price for our sin!

Listen to this and then listen again. We’ve been “Redeemed – at the Cross“.

Now lift up your hands and praise Him again and again!

Amazing Friend, Amazing Grace

Do you ever just sit and ponder how much God loves you?

At first it can be uncomfortable because your mind will tell you, “He can’t really love you. Look at all you’ve done. God loves people like the pastor, Franklin Graham, Mother Theresa but really, He just puts up with you. He loves you because He loves the world but really, it isn’t anything personal and specific to just you”.

Well, if you’ve ever heard those words or something like that, that’s a lie straight from the pit of hell!

God LOVES you. GOD loves you. God loves YOU! Yes, Jesus loves me – the Bible tells me so!!

As I sit here this morning, once again, soaking in God’s love I felt prompted to re-read one of my favorite chapters in Romans.

Right With God

5 We have been made right with God because of our faith. So we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through our faith, Christ has brought us into that blessing of God’s grace that we now enjoy. And we are very happy because of the hope we have of sharing God’s glory. And we are also happy with the troubles we have. Why are we happy with troubles? Because we know that these troubles make us more patient. And this patience is proof that we are strong. And this proof gives us hope. And this hope will never disappoint us. We know this because God has poured out his love to fill our hearts through the Holy Spirit he gave us.

6 Christ died for us when we were unable to help ourselves. We were living against God, but at just the right time Christ died for usVery few people will die to save the life of someone else, even if it is for a good person. Someone might be willing to die for an especially good person. But Christ died for us while we were still sinners, and by this God showed how much he loves us.

We have been made right with God by the blood sacrifice of Christ. So through Christ we will surely be saved from God’s anger. 10 I mean that while we were God’s enemies, he made friends with us through his Son’s death. And the fact that we are now God’s friends makes it even more certain that he will save us through his Son’s life. 11 And not only will we be saved, but we also rejoice right now in what God has done for us through our Lord Jesus Christ. It is because of Jesus that we are now God’s friends.” Romans 5:1-11 ERV

Right with God, peace with God, loved by God, friends with God. Soak that in! We were once His enemies but now we are His friends, by this God showed how much he loves us.

When I ponder how much the Father loves me I must also stop and consider how He wants me to love my enemies. He loves my enemies and He sees value in them because He created them the same as He did me. The same loving Christ that died for us, died for them.

Knowing God’s love for us will change our hearts to be more loving toward others.

I hope you have time to sit quietly after reading this. Sit quietly and hear our Father whisper in your heart, “I love you. You are my friend!”

In A Nut Shell

Each day I am thankful that God has allowed me to share His word with you. I don’t know where I would be without the Father’s love or His wonderful love letter, His Word! In fact, I don’t even want to think about what my life would be like without Him.

In a nutshell – God’s Word has brought me forgiveness of sins, health to my body, peace to my soul, healing for my children. He has enriched my marriage, provided wisdom when my human intellect was lacking, protection in physical and emotional storms and safety in the face of danger. God’s promises let me know that He will always supply and He always has.

I saw in God’s word that He has made provision for more than just eternal life and that He wanted me to live victoriously while I was here on earth. That’s why I share with you.

“I would have been without hope if I had not believed that I would see the loving-kindness of the Lord in the land of the living. 14 Wait for the Lord. Be strong. Let your heart be strong. Yes, wait for the Lord.” Psalm 27:13-14 NLV

All of God’s promises are the same. His Word is for everyone but we don’t all see the same results. Why? We must appropriate what God has given us; simply put we must believe it regardless of how we feel or what circumstances tell us we should believe.

There have been days that I wake up and don’t feel very saved; but my salvation isn’t founded on my feelings, it’s based on God’s love and Jesus’ sacrifice. There are days that I wake up and may not feel healed, but I am because it’s based on God’s promise and Jesus’ sacrifice.

“He forgives all my sins. He heals all my diseases.” Psalms 103:3 NLV

The circumstances said there wasn’t enough lunch to feed 5000 men with five loaves and two fish but the blessing of God flowed and there was more than enough. The medical world said nothing could be done for the woman with the issue of blood but just one touch brought healing to her body. Yes, the word of God changes our circumstances when we believe; it’s called faith! Not faith in ourselves, but faith in God’s unchanging, unfailing love.

Let the words of David’s Psalm be real in your life today.

“You can go to God Most High to hide. You can go to God All-Powerful for protection. 2 I say to the LORD, ‘You are my place of safety, my fortress, My God, I trust in you.‘ 3 God will save you from hidden dangers and from deadly diseases. 4 You can go to him for protection. He will cover you like a bird spreading its wings over its babies. You can trust him to surround and protect you like a shield...14 The Lord says, ‘If someone trusts me, I will save them. I will protect my followers who call to me for help. 15 When my followers call to me, I will answer them. I will be with them when they are in trouble. I will rescue them and honor them. 16 I will give my followers a long life and show them my power to save.” Psalm 91 ERV

The Lord placed a capacity for faith in our hearts. Even when our faith is the size of a mustard seed, that’s smaller than a nutshell, it’s a powerful force.

Always and Forever

Yesterday I shared with you a few verses on the Father’s character that NEVER change. Today I want us to look at a few that are ALWAYS the same.

Realizing that God has chosen to hold Himself accountable to His word gives me such tremendous confidence in the Lord. He will ALWAYS keep His word.

Just this morning I was reading in the Psalms and saw this verse:

“The Lord is always kind to those who worship him, and he keeps his promises to their descendants 18 who faithfully obey him.” Psalm 103:17-18 CEV

This ties in with the verses we read yesterday from I Corinthians 13. Love, God, is never jealous or rude. There is also an always verse in I Corinthians 13.

“Love is always supportive, loyal, hopeful, and trusting. Love never fails!” I Corinthians 13:7-8 CEV

One of the last things Jesus told his disciples before He ascended back into heaven was this:

” Go to the people of all nations and make them my disciples. Baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, 20 and teach them to do everything I have told you. I will be with you always, even until the end of the world.” Matthew 28:19-20 CEV

I will be with you always is a promise without an end date. Always means exactly that – always.

Just a couple more before I end my thoughts on the Father’s unchangeable character.

I am grateful that God always makes it possible for Christ to lead us to victory. God also helps us spread the knowledge about Christ everywhere, and this knowledge is like the smell of perfume.” II Corinthians 2:14 CEV

Now, that’s a lot to process. ALWAYS kind, always supportive, always with us and always leading us to victory!

“Your kindness and love will always be with me each day of my life, and I will live forever in your house, Lord.” Psalm 23:6 CEV

Forever and always our heavenly Father’s love will not fail.

Lessons from the Sea

For those of us who love the sea, the Lord has a lesson for you on His faithfulness.

When we went to Greece we would spend each evening sitting on the balcony listening to the waves as we watched the sunset. Then each morning we would walk the seashore as the sun rose in the sky.

It was a beautiful way to start and end each day. It was a reminder of God’s faithfulness. The sunrise and sunset, the ebb and flow of the tide. It’s been happening like that since the beginning of time.

God is faithful.

“Our Lord, you are King! Majesty and power are your royal robes. You put the world in place,
and it will never be moved. You have always ruled, and you are eternal. The ocean is roaring, Lord! The sea is pounding hard. Its mighty waves are majestic, but you are even more majestic, and you rule over all.
Your decisions are firm, and your temple will always be beautiful and holy.” Psalm 93 CEV

The Lord has proven His faithfulness through His creation. His word is filled with His unchangeable promises.

“God is no mere human! He doesn’t tell lies or change his mind. God always keeps his promises.” Numbers 23:19 CEV

“Christ says “Yes” to all God’s promises. This is why we have Christ to say “Amen” for us to the glory of God.” II Corinthians 1:20 CEV

“The Lord forgives our sins, heals us when we are sick,  and protects us from death. His kindness and love are a crown on our heads.” Psalm 103:3-4 CEV

“I am surrounded by trouble, but you protect me against my angry enemies. With your own powerful arm you keep me safe. You, Lord, will always treat me with kindness. Your love never fails. You have made us what we are. Don’t give up on us now!” Psalm 138:7-8 CEV

Each time you are at the sea or are picturing it in your mind remember God’s faithfulness. Let every sunrise and sunset be a reminder that God always treats you with kindness and His love never fails.

Nature is here as a testimony of God’s goodness and grace!
