Under the Weather

There are two phrases I have heard used quite frequently that are little disconcerting to me. In fact, in my prayer time this morning I used one as I was talking to the Father. I told Him I was feeling under the weather – I didn’t sleep well, I am achy in all my joints and there’s the tummy upset and indigestion.

I felt a prompting to ask you all to pray for me so that my body would be strengthened and I would have the energy I need for today.

I went to look for a picture to use with the blog today and was drawn to the one I took last night. Then it struck me how appropriate this image is.

It had been lightly raining most of the afternoon. The clouds were heavy and the wind currents had positioned them right over our campground. The sky was dark because the clouds were thick and blocked the sun’s light.

The Son is never gone, only briefly out of sight.

The other phrase that annoys me is “under the circumstances”. Have you ever asked someone how they’re doing and the answer comes back “pretty good under the circumstances”? I always want to ask “why are you under your circumstances”.

God’s word promises us that we have been made overcomers. That is a position of victory, a place that is over our circumstances.

“For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.” I John 5:4 ESV

Paul tells us this in Romans 8: “In everything we have won more than a victory because of Christ who loves us. 38 I am sure that nothing can separate us from God’s love—not life or death, not angels or spirits, not the present or the future, 39 and not powers above or powers below. Nothing in all creation can separate us from God’s love for us in Christ Jesus our Lord!” Romans 8:37-39 CEV

We are overcomers and we are victorious in Christ.

If we are under anything let’s be under the shadow of the Almighty and under His wings of protection.

“Live under the protection of God Most High and stay in the shadow of God All-Powerful.
2 Then you will say to the Lord, “You are my fortress, my place of safety; you are my God,
and I trust you.” 3 The Lord will keep you safe from secret traps and deadly diseases. 4 He will spread his wings over you and keep you secure.” Psalm 91:1-4 CEV

Never let the circumstances or the weather put you under.

The Father has set us as overcomers, living under His protection, in a place of security.

Mending Fences

All through the Bible we have verses that tell us to remember – remember the good things the Lord has done.

We are told to teach our children God’s ways; make sure they know of the times the Lord has delivered us, protected and provided.

“You must be very careful not to forget the things you have seen God do for you. Keep reminding yourselves, and tell your children and grandchildren as well.” Deuteronomy 4:9 CEV

“Someday your children will ask, “Why are these rocks here?” Then you can tell them how the water stopped flowing when the chest was being carried across the river. These rocks will always remind our people of what happened here today.” Joshua 4:6-7 CEV

So, this morning the Lord reminded me of a special time we experienced years ago, and I wanted to share it with you. Some of you have read it before but ask the Lord what He is wanting you to learn as you read it again.

I had the privilege to preach the funeral of a dear friend. This old cowboy had lived a good life but not always a godly one. In fact, it wasn’t until a couple years before he died that I had the opportunity to lead him to Jesus. How special it was to know that God’s love had touched this man’s life and that he accepted Jesus as his Savior.

Dave and I made the trip from Montana to Nebraska for the celebration of his life. I remember asking him just a few days before he died if he was ready to see Jesus and he responded with a resounding “Yes, I just didn’t think it would be this soon.”

When we entered the mortuary, I saw his favorite saddle was positioned at the end of his casket and tied to the saddle was a pair of fencin’ pliers. I wondered how many times he must have used those as he rode fence and checked on the cattle.

As I preached his funeral the next day, I made comment that Derald wouldn’t need those pliers anymore because there are no fences to mend in heaven. However, down here on earth we still need them.

How many times have I needed a pair of spiritual fencin’ pliers? How many times have I needed to have the lines around me pulled tight and secured, once again, to a strong post? How many times have I tried to grab a loose strand of wire with my hands and been stuck on the barbs?

“These two things cannot change: God cannot lie when he says something, and he cannot lie when he makes an oath. So these two things are a great help to us who have come to God for safety. They encourage us to hold on to the hope that is ours. 19 This hope is like an anchor for us. It is strong and sure and keeps us safe.” Hebrews 6:18-19

To me, hope is like a pair of fencin’ pliers. It pulls things up tight and keeps us for running off beyond the fence of safety that God has established for us.

God can’t lie. Trust His Word, pull your fence tight, and He will keep you safe and sure.

A List of Rules

When folks come into the campground there are a few rules we ask them to follow. Don’t leave a campfire burning when you leave camp; quiet time starts at 10 pm, keep your dogs on leash, and don’t park off the asphalt. Basics for a pleasant camping trip.

We all grew up with rules. School had one set of rules governing our behavior, at home there was another set and so it was with church.

When I grew up we had all sorts of rules that we needed to live by; no dancing, my grandmother made sure we didn’t say gosh darn it because that was swearing. My freshman year in college we had to sign a statement that we wouldn’t attend movies. Mom told me that she couldn’t use scissors on Sunday when she was a young girl.

There is always some well-meaning person who wants to make rules and regulations for us to live by.

There are some rules that were supposed to make us more holy. Holiness is never about what we do; it’s about our relationship with Christ who lives within us. The things we do or don’t do should be done as a way of showing our love for Christ, not as a way of earning His love.

“So don’t let anyone make rules for you about eating and drinking or about Jewish customs (festivals, New Moon celebrations, or Sabbath days)…Don’t listen to them when they say you are wrong because you don’t do these things. It is so foolish for them to feel such pride, because it is all based on their own human ideas. 19 They don’t keep themselves under the control of the head. Christ is the head, and the whole body depends on him. Because of Christ all the parts of the body care for each other and help each other. So the body is made stronger and held together as God causes it to grow.

20 You died with Christ and were made free from the powers that influence this world. So why do you act as if you still belong to the world? I mean, why do you follow rules like these: 21 “Don’t eat this,” “Don’t taste that,” “Don’t touch that”? 22 These rules are talking about earthly things that are gone after they are used. They are only human commands and teachings.” Colossians 2:17-23 CEV

If we ask the Lord to show us what things in our life don’t please Him, He will tell us. We need to be willing to change those things and ask for His help in doing so. Since we know that all of God’s power lives in Christ and we live in Christ there will never be a power shortage when it comes to change.

When the Father prompts us to change it comes with encouragement and not condemnation. It will be an action of love and never a list of unobtainable rules.

Make the Most of It

Time robbers – they are all around us! We need to be aware of their tactics and stand on guard.

I’ll admit there are some time robbers that have infiltrated my daily routine. Now, before I go any further, I want to say that I am not condemning anyone but will simply be pointing out an area the Holy Spirit has pointed out in my life that He wants me to change.

I spend more time than I should each day playing on my computer. I like several different types of Solitaire. I feel it challenges my problem-solving skills and keeps me alert, however, I allow it to rob time from other things that need my attention.

For weeks, I’ve been saying that I need to write to a few people and encourage them – let them know I’m thinking of them and praying for them but that has gotten pushed to the background while I play “just one more hand”.

“ So be very careful how you live. Live wisely, not like fools. 16 I mean that you should use every opportunity you have for doing good, because these are evil times. 17 So don’t be foolish with your lives, but learn what the Lord wants you to do.” Ephesians 5:15-17 ERV

Use every opportunity for doing good.

Please hear me on this, relaxation is not wrong. We can become so busy that we neglect to rest. There is nothing wrong with playing computer Solitaire but if it robs my time and my energy and keeps me from doing other things that have a more lasting value then it’s a problem.

“God sent Jesus Christ our Savior to give us his Spirit. 7 Jesus treated us much better than we deserve. He made us acceptable to God and gave us the hope of eternal life. 8 This message is certainly true. These teachings are useful and helpful for everyone. I want you to insist that the people follow them, so that all who have faith in God will be sure to do good deeds.” Titus 3:6-8 CEV

Be sure to do good deeds.

This makes me think of the story of the Good Samaritan. Three people saw the man who had been beaten and robbed. Only one stopped to help. I don’t know why – maybe they were scared or just too busy, needing to get to their next appointment so they walked on by. The sad thing about this is one was a priest and one was a worker at the temple.

The thing with time robbers is that many of them aren’t offensive, illegal or immoral but they do keep us from doing something better.

“God planned for us to do good things and to live as he has always wanted us to live. This is why he sent Christ to make us what we are.” Ephesians 2:10 CEV

If the Lord is showing you things that are robbing your time, ask for His help in correcting the situation. If nothing comes to mind, then praise God for right priorities.

Let’s all make the most of the time we have to do good things that will honor the Father and be a blessing to others.

Thirsting For More

Last night after dinner, Dave and I took Kim and Austin to look for wildlife. We drove several miles down the highway searching the meadows.

When we started out there was a light rain falling and the further we traveled down this mountain highway the heavier it got. It seemed we wouldn’t be spotting any animals this night so we turned back to and were going to head to home.

Then there they were. A small herd of cow elk and their calves. Right off the road’s edge, in the meadow. I’m sorry the image is a bit blurry but I only had my phone and when I zoomed in, it distorted the image.

Anyway, back to the elk. We know there are hundreds that live in that wooded area but they stay hidden in the day, coming down to the meadow in the early morning and just about dusk. They eat their fill of the green grasses, covered with the rain’s moisture. They are content.

“As a deer gets thirsty for streams of water, I truly am thirsty for you, my God. 2 In my heart, I am thirsty for you, the living God.” Psalm 42:1-2 CEV

Thirsty for the living God.

What brought these elk out into the meadow, out from the protection of the trees, was their hunger and thirst. They came to this place to feed, to a place to find nourishment.

“Those who are hungry and thirsty to be right with God are happy, because they will be filled.” Matthew 5:6 NLV

God promises that when we have a hunger for Him and His ways we will be filled. Satisfied. Content.

“You should praise the Lord for his love and for the wonderful things he does for all of us. 9 To everyone who is thirsty, he gives something to drink; to everyone who is hungry, he gives good things to eat.” Psalm 107:8-10 CEV

I am determined to thirst for the more of God and His love. I know I will be filled.

In the Storm

Something we know about on the mountain is the storms.

We watch them roll in – first the clouds gather, then they darken, soon after comes the rain. With the rain we generally have a few good lightning flashes and then the thunder. Sometimes the thunder and lightning can be earth shaking.

But after…the skies clear, the storm has passed.

Isn’t that the way it is with life? We can see the storms brewing, the winds blow, the sky grows dark and the rain and thunder come.

Married or single, male or female, the storms come. The times when you’re holding hands and praying because your business has just gone bust, or you’ve lost a child. The times when you want to give up completely but make yourself take one more breath and one more step. The doctor’s report, the auto accident, a ruined reputation, divorce papers.

The storms come. But…

“A very bad wind came up on the lake. The waves were coming over the sides and into the boat, and it was almost full of water. 38 Jesus was inside the boat, sleeping with his head on a pillow. The followers went and woke him. They said, “Teacher, don’t you care about us? We are going to drown!”

39 Jesus stood up and gave a command to the wind and the water. He said, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind stopped, and the lake became calm.” Mark 4:37-39 ERV

Jesus is in the storm with us! He has promised to never leave us or abandon us. He is there to calm the storm.

Trust Him!

“You are a strong tower, where I am safe from my enemies. 4 Let me live with you forever
and find protection under your wings, my God.” Psalm 61:3-4 CEV

“Heavenly Father, my prayer today is for all who are reading this. For those that are weary be their strength, those that are sick be their healer and great physician, for those who are hurting show yourself as their comforter, for those seeking direction fill them with your wisdom, for those who are frightened bathe them in peace, those that are in need reveal yourself as their source of supply and for those who are downcast fill them with your joy! Father, you are the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. All we have need of we find in you. Thank you. In Jesus Name.”

We are safe in the midst of the storm!

The Bottom Line

Did you get to your bottom line yesterday? Did you assess which things were an asset and which were a liability to your Christian walk? Did you find that you owe a huge debt of love; first to Christ and then to those He has placed in your life? I did too!

When I saw this image this morning, I knew it was the one I needed to use. Notice it’s in the form of a cross. When we follow the example that Christ set for us, our lives will be truly profitable.

We need to look for ways to love each and every day. It could be a kind word, an invitation to dinner, a listening ear or financial assistance. It doesn’t have to be a “huge” gesture to be effective and selfless. Just make it heartfelt and sincere.

Again. I was reading in Romans and I have been drawn to the end of the book. It’s there we find Paul’s instructions for living with one another.

“If our faith is strong, we should be patient with the Lord’s followers whose faith is weak. We should try to please them instead of ourselves. 2 We should think of their good and try to help them by doing what pleases them. 3 Even Christ did not try to please himself. But as the Scriptures say, “The people who insulted you also insulted me.” 4 And the Scriptures were written to teach and encourage us by giving us hope. 5 God is the one who makes us patient and cheerful. I pray that he will help you live at peace with each other, as you follow Christ. 6 Then all of you together will praise God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. 7 Honor God by accepting each other, as Christ has accepted you.” Romans 15:1-7 ERV

Jesus ministered to the outcasts, the hurting, the misfits. He was also criticized and judged wrongfully for doing what was right. He was never out to promote Himself or to receive accolades or praise from men; He had one simple mission – to do what the Father had asked Him to do; to reconcile the world to the Father. He became a servant instead of a king.

“Whoever wants to be first must serve the rest of you like a slave. 28 Do as I did: The Son of Man did not come for people to serve him. He came to serve others and to give his life to save many people.” Matthew 20:27-28 ERV

I remember when these verses became real to me. I had been complaining to the Lord about all I was doing to take care of people; going on and on about how no one was helping me and how all the responsibility for a particular meeting was on my shoulders. Poor me! My bottom line of love was in a severe deficit.

That’s when I just “happened” to be reading in Matthew and these words jumped off the page and into my heart. I quickly repented and changed my attitude about serving. I can truly say that today I thank the Lord for opportunities to serve.

Seek out situations to serve today. Do it with an attitude of love and not obligation. It’s what the Father is asking us to do.

Debt Free

For years Dave and I were like a lot of people, we struggled financially. We knew we needed to be better stewards of what God had given us.

Finally, we came to that place where we are debt free, almost. It’s an amazing thing to watch how God has moved. We don’t have millions but we have more than enough. There is one area of debt that we will always have, let me explain.

Have you ever put together a profit and loss statement? Listing your assests and liabilities can certainly be worthwhile in determining how you should spend your time and your money.

Get down to the bottom line. What do you owe? That’s the question the Apostle Paul was addressing this morning as I read Romans 13.

“You should owe nothing to anyone, except that you will always owe love to each other. The person who loves others has done all that the law commands. 9 The law says, “You must not commit adultery, you must not murder anyone, you must not steal, you must not want what belongs to someone else.” All these commands and all other commands are really only one rule: “Love your neighbor the same as you love yourself.” 10 Love doesn’t hurt others. So loving is the same as obeying all the law.

11 I say this because you know that we live in an important time. Yes, it is now time for you to wake up from your sleep. Our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. 12 The night is almost finished. The day is almost here. So we should stop doing whatever belongs to darkness. We should prepare ourselves to fight evil with the weapons that belong to the light. 13 We should live in a right way, like people who belong to the day. We should not have wild parties or be drunk. We should not be involved in sexual sin or any kind of immoral behavior. We should not cause arguments and trouble or be jealous. 14 But be like the Lord Jesus Christ, so that when people see what you do, they will see Christ. Don’t think about how to satisfy the desires of your sinful self.” Romans 13:8-14 ERV

Owe no one anything…nothing except love!

The desire to live debt free is admirable and is one worth pursuing. An even greater goal is to live a life of loving people, not with a human selfish love but with the same love that Jesus shows us. That is the debt we will always carry.

So, let’s look at that bottom line of our Profit/Loss statement again. What do we owe?

May love be our daily debt!

Hurry Up & Wait

Today is one of our days’ off and I’m thankful that we don’t have a long list of things that need to be done. Sometimes our non-workdays are filled with more activities than those when we work a full shift.

Whatever the day brings, it seems there is always a time of waiting. At 69, you would think I had learned to wait better but I’m still working on it.

How are you going to spend your day? Do you have a list of projects that need to be completed? Are you travelling to far away places? Do you think your activities are mundane and uneventful? Or do you possibly have a “big” appointment that could be life changing?

As you hurry through your morning or stop to have a quiet cup of coffee and a reflective moment, I want to encourage you to start your day praising God for the blessings in your life. You have breath, a computer/tablet/phone (if you’re reading this), a roof over your head and a bed to sleep in, you have some degree of health and wealth and you have God’s promise to never leave you or abandon you!

So much to be thankful for.

A while back, I was reading the last chapter of Luke. Jesus disciples and apostles had followed him for 3 years. They thought he was going to set up an earthly kingdom, overthrow their Roman oppressors and bring peace to their nation. But instead, He died; they were dejected. The resurrection gave them new hope . They learned He was leaving again but this time they had a new prospective.

What did they do?

“Jesus led his followers out of Jerusalem almost to Bethany. He raised his hands and blessed his followers. 51 While he was blessing them, he was separated from them and carried into heaven. 52 They worshiped him and went back to Jerusalem very happy. 53 They stayed at the Temple all the time, praising God.” Luke 24:50-53 ERV

They spent their waiting time praising God!

What a great way to pass the time while you’re waiting in traffic, or in the checkout line that seems to be at a standstill. You can praise God while waiting to be served in a restaurant or on hold waiting for a live person to take your call. It’s the best way to spend your time while waiting in the carpool lane or sitting in a waiting room at the hospital.

“Wait for the Lord’s help. Be strong and brave, and wait for the Lord’s help.” Psalm 27:14 ERV

Wherever you are waiting today, wait on the Lord – praise Him and He will fill your life with joy!

Appraised Value

One of the first things I saw this morning was a posting of things to do to improve your own “self worth”.

Oh my!

I tried that for years. In high school I wanted to be part of the in-crowd, I never was. That meant I had to have the right friends, wear the right clothes, be a cheerleader or a cheerleader’s friend and the list went on.

As an adult that same challenge follows us. The right job, house, spouse, car, vacation spot. It can be devastating emotionally when these things escape our grasp.

God’s opinion of us is so much greater than our opinion of ourselves. He sees us, created in His image. Like a jeweler examining a precious diamond, He looks us over and sees a beauty that others don’t see.

“And they shall be Mine, says the Lord of hosts, in that day when I publicly recognize and openly declare them to be My jewels (My special possession, My peculiar treasure). And I will spare them, as a man spares his own son who serves him.” Malachi 3:17 AMPC

He sees us as valuable, priceless and worth the ultimate sacrifice.

He loved us enough to send His Son to die for us so that we could live in Him!

Now that alone should drive out any feelings of low self-esteem or worthlessness!

” Brothers and sisters, God chose you to be his. Think about that! Not many of you were wise in the way the world judges wisdom. Not many of you had great influence, and not many of you came from important families. 27 But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise. He chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 28 And God chose what the world thinks is not important—what the world hates and thinks is nothing. He chose these to destroy what the world thinks is important. 29 God did this so that no one can stand before him and boast about anything. 30 It is God who has made you part of Christ Jesus. And Christ has become for us wisdom from God. He is the reason we are right with God and pure enough to be in his presence. Christ is the one who set us free from sin. 31 So, as the Scriptures say, “Whoever boasts should boast only about the Lord.” I Corinthians 1:26-31 ERV

Christ gave his life to purchase our salvation. He gave all He had, He established our value.

“Also, God’s kingdom is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. 46 One day he found a very fine pearl. He went and sold everything he had to buy it.” Matthew 13:45-46 CEV

God’s appraisal is complete. He has examined us and in His expert opinion we are priceless.
