To the Rescue

This morning has me thinking about my dad. Dad was a good man. He loved mom, us kids and the Lord. He was an impressive figure of a man; handsome, strong, rugged, loyal, outspoken and he hated injustice.

Dad wasn’t well educated, only went to the 7th grade but he was one of the smartest men I know. He could read people, their sincerity or deceit and he could fix or build anything.

Dad’s been gone for 19 years now, and I miss him. When we find a great new lake, I think of Dad. Driving through a river valley and spotting a good place to fish, building a new shed, fixing the car – all make me think of him.

Watching my grandchildren grow into good people, playing with our newest grandchild, talking to our grown kids – all these make me miss him and grateful that I have so many wonderful memories.

There were times that I needed Daddy to come to my rescue and he did. Never a question that he wouldn’t be there to help and defend. Now if I had done something stupid he would talk to me about that later but first instinct was to come to my aid.

Maybe you don’t have such a good memory of your relationship with your dad but your Heavenly Father desires a relationship with you that is so much greater than any you’ve ever had with your earthly father.

All of you are God’s children because of your faith in Christ Jesus. 27 And when you were baptized, it was as though you had put on Christ in the same way you put on new clothes. 28 Faith in Christ Jesus is what makes each of you equal with each other, whether you are a Jew or a Greek, a slave or a free person, a man or a woman. 29 So if you belong to Christ, you are now part of Abraham’s family, and you will be given what God has promised…Now that we are his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts. And his Spirit tells us that God is our Father. 7 You are no longer slaves. You are God’s children, and you will be given what he has promised.” Galatians 3:26-4:7 CEV

In God’s family we are all equal – the same blessings are available to all of us. God’s love is not greater for one than the other; His mercy is given freely to us all and His protection and provision are not awarded with prejudice or bias. It’s our faith in Jesus Christ that makes us equal.

You’re heavenly Father loves you and whatever you may be going through today He’s right there with you and when things get bigger than you can handle your Dad’s got this. Let Him handle it!

Marriage, Yes, Marriage

How many of you know that laughter and humor are good for a marriage?

The Bible tells us that a merry heart is good like a medicine, but sorrow dries out the bones. So, as we look at Paul’s teaching on marriage, I want us to have a smile on our faces and joy in our hearts.

Honor Christ and put others first. 22  A wife should put her husband first, as she does the Lord. 23 A husband is the head of his wife, as Christ is the head and the Savior of the church, which is his own body. 24 Wives should always put their husbands first, as the church puts Christ first.” Ephesians 5:21-24 CEV

I had a wife tell me once that she didn’t like these verses on submission. She said you don’t know my husband. He will use these verses against me. I told her that it was true that I didn’t know him, but God did, and this was God’s instruction. We wives should put our husbands first; showing them respect and honor. Someone has to be able to make the final decision in the household and God has given that to our husbands.

” A husband should love his wife as much as Christ loved the church and gave his life for it. 26 He made the church holy by the power of his word, and he made it pure by washing it with water. 27 Christ did this, so he would have a glorious and holy church, without faults or spots or wrinkles or any other flaws.” Ephesians 5:25-27 CEV

These are strong words. Husbands are to love their wives in the same way that Christ loves the church. Christ made the ultimate sacrifice for us, giving His life for our redemption.

28 In the same way, a husband should love his wife as much as he loves himself. A husband who loves his wife shows he loves himself. 29 None of us hate our own bodies. We provide for them and take good care of them, just as Christ does for the church, 30 because we are each part of his body. 31  As the Scriptures say, “A man leaves his father and mother to get married, and he becomes like one person with his wife.” 32 This is a great mystery, but I understand it to mean Christ and his church.” Ephesians 5:28-32 CEV

A husband who loves as Christ loves will protect, nurture, provide and be kind to his wife. He will treat her in the same way that he provides for his own needs and desires. The marriage relationship should be an example of the love and submission that Christ has for us and that we show to Him.

“So each husband should love his wife as much as he loves himself, and each wife should respect her husband.” Ephesians 5:33 CEV

There will be differences and disagreements in marriage. Those times can help us grow in our understanding of one another and make the marriage stronger. Having Christ’s point of view – love, respect, and forgiveness – can make our marriages a little bit of heaven here on earth.

For Our Benefit

This morning I’m going to do something I rarely do. I’m going to talk to you about a few “don’ts”.

When I was a kid I received a lot of instruction; don’t touch the stove, it’s hot. Don’t throw rocks at the window. There was a skull and crossbones on the bottle of poison telling me not to drink it. Don’t run with scissors. Don’t cut the dogs hair. Don’t go swimming for an hour after you eat.

All of these, and many more, instructions were for my benefit from loving and caring parents.

The Apostle Paul is giving us some don’ts today. These come from our loving heavenly Father and are for our good and beneficial to our development as we grow in Christ.

“So stop lying to each other. Tell the truth to your neighbor. We all belong to the same body. 26 If you are angry, do not let it become sin. Get over your anger before the day is finished. 27 Do not let the devil start working in your life. 28 Anyone who steals must stop it! He must work with his hands so he will have what he needs and can give to those who need help. 29 Watch your talk! No bad words should be coming from your mouth. Say what is good. Your words should help others grow as Christians30 Do not make God’s Holy Spirit have sorrow for the way you live. The Holy Spirit has put a mark on you for the day you will be set free. 31 Put out of your life all these things: bad feelings about other people, anger, temper, loud talk, bad talk which hurts other people, and bad feelings which hurt other people. 32 You must be kind to each other. Think of the other person. Forgive other people just as God forgave you because of Christ’s death on the cross.” Ephesians 4:25-32 NLV

Each one of these instructions is for our benefit. Lying will destroy our character. Anger will give us ulcers and effect our heart. Stealing will get us thrown in jail or fired. Bad talk will separate family and friends.

On the other hand kindness, forgiveness, and thoughtfulness are beneficial and restorative.

The Bible is practical in its instruction. Let me put it this way, Don’t not follow the loving guidance that God gives us for a prosperous and peaceful life.

Power Working In Us

Christ lived in a time of political occupation and suppression. His message: be reconciled to God and live a life that reflects His love. That’s the message I seek to deliver each day.

Today, we pick up in the 3rd chapter of Ephesians. Paul is about to pray another prayer for all of us.

I first became familiar with this prayer in 1980. Back then I read it every day as part of my daily meditation in God’s word. I didn’t continue reading it daily but I’ve probably read it over 14000 times and each time I come away with a greater understanding of God’s love for each of us.

I personalize it using my name and first person pronouns. I encourage you to do the same.

12 In Christ we come before God with freedom and without fear. We can do this because of our faith in Christ13 So I ask you not to be discouraged…14 So I bow in prayer before the Father. 15 Every family in heaven and on earth gets its true name from him. 16 I ask the Father with his great glory to give you the power to be strong in your spirits. He will give you that strength through his Spirit. 17 I pray that Christ will live in your hearts because of your faith. I pray that your life will be strong in love and be built on love. 18 And I pray that you and all God’s holy people will have the power to understand the greatness of Christ’s lovehow wide, how long, how high, and how deep that love is19 Christ’s love is greater than anyone can ever know, but I pray that you will be able to know that love. Then you can be filled with everything God has for you.

20 With God’s power working in us, he can do much, much more than anything we can ask or think of21 To him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus for all time, forever and ever. Amen.” Ephesians 12-21 ERV

It’s vitality important that we realize we have been invited to come into God’s presence in freedom and without fear. His message to us is to come boldly to His throne and find help in our time of need. (Hebrews 4:16)

When we come… we will receive power to strengthen our spirit. Christ came boldly in the Garden of Gethsemane the night of His betrayal. How much more important is it for us to come and find strength in our times of need.

When we come… Christ lives in our hearts and He fills us with His love.

To understand the depth, width and breadth of the love of God is almost incomprehensible. But, when we look at the life of Christ we see how God’s love was manifest on a daily basis. To the leper, the harlot, the tax collector, the hypocrites, the accusers and the murderers.

His love is unconditional; it is given freely to everyone who comes to receive. It is greater than we can know intellectually however, we can know it by experience.

Why does God want us to know this great love?

Then you can be filled with everything God has for you. 20 With God’s power working in us, he can do much, much more than anything we can ask or think of.”

And then, God receives glory for His loving kindness and more are drawn into relationship with Him.

His love produces a mighty power within us!

It’s Personal

Do you read your Bible as if it’s a personal letter just for you? I hope you do. It’s an amazing book, written personally to each one who reads it.

Although God’s message is universal and to all who will believe it’s also written with specific and individual instruction so that we may each have our own personal relationship with the Father.

The purpose of Paul writing to the Christians at the church in Ephesus was to introduce them to this mystery of God’s amazing grace being given to them. It’s personal.

God let me know his secret plan by showing it to me. I have already written a little about this. And if you read what I wrote, you can see that I understand the secret truth about Christ. People who lived in other times were not told that secret truth. But now, through the Spirit, God has made it known to his holy apostles and prophets. And this is the secret truth: that by hearing the Good News, those who are not Jews will share with the Jews in the blessings God has for his people. They are part of the same body, and they share in the promise God made through Christ Jesus.” Ephesians 3:3-6 ERV

For thousands of years, the blessings of God were reserved for His people, the Jews. David had confidence as he faced Goliath that God was with Him because of the covenant that God made with the Jewish people.

The three men who were threatened with a fiery furnace were not afraid because they trusted in their promise keeping God. Daniel chose to serve God even though it meant being thrown into a den of lions.

Esther, a young Jewish girl, who became queen, boldly went before the king and his adviser, who was intent on killing all Jews, because of her trust in her covenant keeping God.

And now Paul was telling the Ephesians, and us, that these same blessings and promises of God are made available to us through Christ.

By God’s special gift of grace, I became a servant to tell that Good News. He gave me that grace by using his powerI am the least important of all God’s people. But he gave me this gift—to tell the non-Jewish people the Good News about the riches Christ has. These riches are too great to understand fullyAnd God gave me the work of telling all people about the plan for his secret truth. That secret truth has been hidden in him since the beginning of time. He is the one who created everything. 10 His purpose was that all the rulers and powers in the heavenly places will now know the many different ways he shows his wisdom. They will know this because of the church. 11 This agrees with the plan God had since the beginning of time. He did what he planned, and he did it through Christ Jesus our Lord. 12 In Christ we come before God with freedom and without fear. We can do this because of our faith in Christ.” Ephesians 3:7-12 ERV

We, you and I, have been chosen by God to inherit His promises and through those promises we will be a testimony of the Father’s goodness and love. Our purpose is to never underestimate the power of God working in our lives and to boldly proclaim, like those of old, that God is able and deserves all glory.

It’s personal!

Unity & Peace

I want to start with a little history lesson this morning. When God made a blood covenant with Abraham, He set Abraham and his descendants apart as a chosen people. A people of promise. Before Jacob, Abraham’s grandson moved his descendants to Egypt during the famine, his name had been changed to Israel. The Egyptians then called these people Israelites.

Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt and God gave them a new set of laws and a new way and place of worship, first in a portable tabernacle and then in a Temple that King Solomon built. Because they lived in the area of Judah, the land God promised them, they were also known as Jews, people from Judah.

Throughout their history peoples were distinguished as Jews and Gentiles, anyone who was not a Jew or Israelite was a Gentile. There was a division. The Jews were a people of promise; God had given them His law and His blessings. The sign of their covenant was circumcision. There was a division.

This morning, I want to show you how Christ changed all of the that. He brought unity and hope.

“Don’t forget that you are Gentiles. In fact, you used to be called “uncircumcised” by those who take pride in being circumcised. 12 At that time you did not know about Christ. You were foreigners to the people of Israel, and you had no part in the promises God had made to them. You were living in this world without hope and without God, 13 and you were far from God. But Christ offered his life’s blood as a sacrifice and brought you near God.

14 Christ has made peace between Jews and Gentiles, and he has united us by breaking down the wall of hatred that separated us. Christ gave his own body 15  to destroy the Law of Moses with all its rules and commands. He even brought Jews and Gentiles together as though we were only one person, when he united us in peace. 16  On the cross Christ did away with our hatred for each other. He also made peace between us and God by uniting Jews and Gentiles in one body. 17  Christ came and preached peace to you Gentiles, who were far from God, and peace to us Jews, who were near God. 18 And because of Christ, all of us can come to the Father by the same Spirit.

19 You Gentiles are no longer strangers and foreigners. You are citizens with everyone else who belongs to the family of God20 You are like a building with the apostles and prophets as the foundation and with Christ as the most important stone. 21 Christ is the one who holds the building together and makes it grow into a holy temple for the Lord.” Ephesians 2:11-21 CEV

In Christ, Jew and Gentile alike, have been united in one body and we are called the body of Christ. He is our head and our firm foundation. From Him we receive His command.

“But I am giving you a new command. You must love each other, just as I have loved you. 35 If you love each other, everyone will know that you are my disciples.” John 13:34-35 CEV

Since we now have peace with God let’s also walk in His love.

Rich in Mercy

I am enjoying going through Ephesians with you. I hope you are being encouraged by it as well.

Let’s jump right into chapter 2.

Once you were dead because of your disobedience and your many sinsYou used to live in sin, just like the rest of the world, obeying the devil—the commander of the powers in the unseen world. He is the spirit at work in the hearts of those who refuse to obey God. All of us used to live that way, following the passionate desires and inclinations of our sinful nature. By our very nature we were subject to God’s anger, just like everyone else.

4 But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so muchthat even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!) For he raised us from the dead along with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ Jesus. So God can point to us in all future ages as examples of the incredible wealth of his grace and kindness toward us, as shown in all he has done for us who are united with Christ Jesus.” Ephesians 2:1-7 NLT

Everyone of us, there are no exceptions, were spiritually dead. Separated from God’s favor because of our sin.

BUT GOD…

I love those two words. We were sinners BUT. But means a change is coming. “But God” tells us that the authority of heaven is getting involved and things are about to change in a miraculous way.

But God—so rich is He in His mercy! Because of and in order to satisfy the great and wonderful and intense love with which He loved us, Even when we were dead (slain) by [our own] shortcomings and trespasses, He made us alive together in fellowship and in union with Christ; [He gave us the very life of Christ Himself, the same new life with which He quickened Him, for] it is by grace (His favor and mercy which you did not deserve) that you are saved (delivered from judgment and made partakers of Christ’s salvation).” Ephesians 2:4-5 AMPC

Have you ever seen those old movies when someone has been charged with a crime and the defendant says “I throw myself on the mercy of the court”? That phrase means they are asking for leniency, consideration of extenuating circumstances. Help.

We were spiritually dead because of our sin BUT GOD showed us mercy because of Christ. Christ took our judgement, our sentencing and because we are now in Christ God, the Father, said “Case dismissed.

But God showed His love to us. While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Now that we have been saved from the punishment of sin by the blood of Christ, He will save us from God’s anger also. 10 We hated God. But we were saved from the punishment of sin by the death of Christ. He has brought us back to God and we will be saved by His life.” Romans 5:8-10 NLV

There it is again, BUT GOD. We’ve been saved from the punishment of sin by Christ’s sacrifice. He has showered us with His kindness and love.

God has given us a life that is truly rich in mercy!

Read It Again

Have you taken my suggestion of reading the book of Ephesians? I hope so, and now, I will encourage you to read it again.

There is so much spiritual gold to be found in this book. Personally, I have read the verses I’m going to share with you this morning thousands of times. Each time, they become more real and my understanding of God’s love and provision grows deeper.

I have to stop for a moment on something I just said. Provision. Pro – vision. To look ahead and supply what is needed. From the beginning of time, God looked ahead, saw what we need and provided it.

Don’t just read over these verses. Read them slowly, phrase by phrase, and let the Holy Spirit make them real to your heart.

“Ever since I first heard of your strong faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for God’s people everywhere, 16 I have not stopped thanking God for you. I pray for you constantly, 17 asking God, the glorious Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, to give you spiritual wisdom and insight so that you might grow in your knowledge of God. 18 I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand the confident hope he has given to those he called—his holy people who are his rich and glorious inheritance.

19 I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe him. This is the same mighty power 20 that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God’s right hand in the heavenly realms. 21 Now he is far above any ruler or authority or power or leader or anything else—not only in this world but also in the world to come. 22 God has put all things under the authority of Christ and has made him head over all things for the benefit of the church23 And the church is his body; it is made full and complete by Christ, who fills all things everywhere with himself.” Ephesians 1:15-23 NLT

There are so many nuggets in those few verses. God doesn’t want us to miss a thing.

  1. Spiritual wisdom and insight is needed so we can grow in our knowledge of God
  2. With that knowledge our hearts will be flooded with hope, confident hope
  3. (This next one really took me a while to comprehend.) WE are God’s rich and glorious inheritance. An inheritance is something we receive when someone dies. It something of value. When Christ died, He gave the Father an inheritance – He gave the Father us! Let that sink in.
  4. When we understand that, we will also begin to understand the power of God that is working for us. It’s the same power that He demonstrated when He raised Christ from the dead.
  5. And finally, God put all things under Christ’s authority for our benefit. We, the church, are Christ’s body and as such we are full and complete in Him.

All I can say now is go back and “Read It Again”. God bless you!

Shining a Light on #1

Do you remember the blogs I posted in January? I said I wanted us to start the year focused on the Father’s love. Well, here we are halfway through the year and I think it might be time for a refresher course.

This morning, I found myself starting to read through the book of Ephesians – again! It really is one of my favorite letters that Paul wrote. For the next little while, I will be sharing thoughts with you from his writings. I encourage you to read it along with me and let the Holy Spirit speak to you personally.

I pray that God our Father and our Lord Jesus Christ will be kind to you and will bless you with peace!

Praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ for the spiritual blessings that Christ has brought us from heaven4 Before the world was created, God had Christ choose us to live with him and to be his holy and innocent and loving people5 God was kind and decided that Christ would choose us to be God’s own adopted childrenGod treated us with undeserved grace because of the Son he dearly loves, and so we should praise God.” Ephesians 1:2-6 CEV

Now, that’s a lot to grab hold of and it’s only the first six verses of the book!

You and I – WE – have been chosen before the world began to receive God the Father’s kindness and blessing of peace. Christ brought spiritual blessings from heaven to earth and gave them to us because He choose us to be God’s very own children.

We have done nothing, nor can we do anything, to earn this adoption. It has been given to us as a free gift of undeserved grace.

Do you know what the the word unmerited means? Merriam/Webster defines it this way: not adequately earned or deserved not merited

We could not adequately earn or deserve God’s favor. It is freely given, a precious gift of paramount importance. It’s free but it isn’t cheap. It is the most costly gift that we will ever be offered because it required the life of the giver.

“Christ sacrificed his life’s blood to set us free, which means our sins are now forgiven. Christ did this because of God’s gift of undeserved grace to us. God has great wisdom and understanding, and by what Christ has done, God has shown us his own mysterious ways. 10 Then when the time is right, God will do all he has planned, and Christ will bring together everything in heaven and on earth. 11 God always does what he plans, and this is why he appointed Christ to choose us.” Ephesians 1:8-11 CEV

Our sins are forgiven because of God’s grace!

Oh yes, God is very kind to us. Our hearts should be filled with peace because of His amazing love. There’s only one thing we should do after being offered such a wonderful gift. We should accept it humbly and then spend the rest of our days thanking Him for choosing us.

We should shine a light on the One who gave His all for us.

Call Her Blessed

“Charm can be deceiving, and beauty fades away, but a woman who honors the Lord deserves to be praised.” Proverbs 31:30 CEV

Today I would like to honor my Mom. I would like to tell you what happened 71 years ago today.

My parents and siblings lived in a little town called Tacna. It’s about 40 miles out of Yuma. My dad worked road construction and their home was a small 8’x30′ trailer. My birth was eminent and since they lived so far from town, and I was my mother’s third pregnancy her doctor scheduled my delivery.

Dad drove Mom to the hospital in Yuma. July 3rd in Yuma. There was no such thing as air conditioning. In fact, there was a water shortage, so the evaporative coolers didn’t operate properly, no water to cool them, only hot air circulating through the hospital. I was born at 3:30 p.m. and my Mom later learned that her dad had passed away about twelve hours earlier at 3:30 a.m.

That’s how life started for me.

My Mom was a real trooper, and she loved the Lord. She and Daddy both had accepted Christ about five years before in a tent revival meeting. They raised us with prayer, love and a trust in the Lord.

Times were tough; we didn’t have a lot of material things, but we did always have food on the table, a bed to sleep in, a home filled with love and prayer. I wasn’t always the perfect daughter, and she wasn’t always the perfect mom but I’m so thankful that God chose her to be my role model.

“Bring up a child by teaching him the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn away from it.” Proverbs 22:6 NLV

Mom’s been gone three years now and I miss not hearing her voice on the phone as she called to wish me happy birthday. So many good memories of birthday cakes she made, parties she planned, new clothes she made and the love she gave.

And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. Keep these words in your heart that I am telling you today. Do your best to teach them to your children. Talk about them when you sit in your house and when you walk on the road and when you lie down and when you get up.” Deuteronomy 6:5-7 NLV

I want this to be an encouragement to each of you. Our possessions may be meager but as long as we are confident in God’s love and His goodness, we have immeasurable wealth to share with our children.

Thanks Mom.

Thanks Mom – I’m blessed!
