When Things Go Wrong

I was reading some of my favorite verses this morning and the thought came to me, what do we do when things go wrong?

And they do, you know…

A flat tire, a broken washing machine, an explosion in the kitchen – these are the simple things but what about the bigger messes? Cutbacks at work, downsizing, illness, divorce, fire, hurricanes, political upheaval, what do we do then.

“ Don’t worry about anything, but pray about everything. With thankful hearts offer up your prayers and requests to God. 7 Then, because you belong to Christ Jesus, God will bless you with peace that no one can completely understand. And this peace will control the way you think and feel.

8 Finally, my friends, keep your minds on whatever is true, pure, right, holy, friendly, and proper. Don’t ever stop thinking about what is truly worthwhile and worthy of praise. 9 You know the teachings I gave you, and you know what you heard me say and saw me do. So follow my example. And God, who gives peace, will be with you.

10 The Lord has made me very grateful that at last you have thought about me once again. Actually, you were thinking about me all along, but you didn’t have any chance to show it. 11 I am not complaining about having too little. I have learned to be satisfied with whatever I have. 12 I know what it is to be poor or to have plenty, and I have lived under all kinds of conditions. I know what it means to be full or to be hungry, to have too much or too little. 13 Christ gives me the strength to face anything.” Philippians 4:6-13 CEV

Paul was a man who knew what it was to have things go wrong.

He was thrown into prison more than once, run out of towns for preaching. Once he was stoned and left for dead. He was shipwrecked, snake bit, hungry, left afloat in the sea and he spent his final days under house arrest, not being able to travel to visit the saints he loved.

Yet, his letters were filled with encouragement for them and for us. He showed us how to live a life of faithfulness, trusting God in every situation!

I love verse 9. “Follow my example and God will give you peace”.

Peace? Peace!

And how do we achieve this? By praying about everything, worrying about nothing, and thinking on the goodness of God. Whatever is true, honest, pure, right, kind and holy. In others words having our minds stayed or anchored to God.

“God, you give true peace to people who depend on you, to those who trust in you.” Isaiah 26:3 ERV

In the middle of the mess, we can trust. When the waves are ready to swamp our boats, we can trust. When we’re in the lions’ den or facing the giants, we can trust!

“Christ gives me the strength to face anything.” Philippians 4:13 CEV

No matter where, no matter what, no matter how big the mess, Christ promises us the strength we need to go through it in victory.

“But thanks be to God, who always leads us in victory through Christ. God uses us to spread his knowledge everywhere like a sweet-smelling perfume.” II Corinthians 2:14 CEV

And we will be a sweet-smelling testimony to God’s goodness and faithfulness!

Cleansed

The definition I found of this word is simple and succinct.

“make (something, especially the skin) thoroughly clean”

Thoroughly clean. What an amazing thought!

“So now anyone who is in Christ Jesus is not judged guilty. 2 That is because in Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit that brings life made you free. It made you free from the law that brings sin and death. 3 The law was without power because it was made weak by our sinful selves. But God did what the law could not do: He sent his own Son to earth with the same human life that everyone else uses for sin. God sent him to be an offering to pay for sin. So God used a human life to destroy sin. 4 He did this so that we could be right just as the law said we must be. Now we don’t live following our sinful selves. We live following the Spirit.

5 People who live following their sinful selves think only about what they want. But those who live following the Spirit are thinking about what the Spirit wants them to do. 6 If your thinking is controlled by your sinful self, there is spiritual death. But if your thinking is controlled by the Spirit, there is life and peace.” Romans 8:1-6 ERV

When we were in Greece last year, we spent a lot of time walking on the beach. The waves would roll in and when they receded our footprints had been completely removed. The seashore was once again cleansed of our trespass.

That’s what God’s love and provision of salvation does for our lives. It cleanses us from all unrighteousness. (I John 1:9)

“ But if we confess our sins, God will forgive us. We can trust God to do this. He always does what is right. He will make us clean from all the wrong things we have done.” I John 1:9 ERV

“ He died to make the church holy. He used the telling of the Good News to make the church clean by washing it with water. 27 Christ died so that he could give the church to himself like a bride in all her beauty. He died so that the church could be holy and without fault, with no evil or sin or any other thing wrong in it.” Ephesians 5:26-27 ERV

When we come to the Father, confessing our sin, He cleanses us. Washes us clean. His word says that He not only forgives our sin but He forgets it as well. God will never remind us of our past transgression. He removes it from us.

“I, the Lord, am the one speaking to you. Come, let’s discuss this. Even if your sins are as dark as red dye, that stain can be removed and you will be as pure as wool that is as white as snow.” Isaiah 1:18 ERV

God forgives and forgets however; we often dwell on the things we’ve done wrong. We need to have our guilty conscience cleansed so that we can live in the freedom Christ died to bring us.

“Jesus Christ did the things God wanted him to do. And because of that, we are made holy through the sacrifice of Christ’s body. Christ made that sacrifice one time—enough for all time...22 Sprinkled with the blood of Christ, our hearts have been made free from a guilty conscience, and our bodies have been washed with pure water. So come near to God with a sincere heart, full of confidence because of our faith in Christ.” Hebrews 10:10 & 22 ERV

Because of Christ we can have a clear conscience and confidence in our relationship with God.

“And when our hearts make us feel guilty, we can still have peace before God, because God is greater than our hearts. He knows everything.” I John 3:20 ERV

My dear friend this is the good news of the gospel – we are not condemned. We are cleansed – made thoroughly clean!

My Father’s Hands

Thinking this morning about my earthly father and my heavenly father. My dad was a burly guy – a real man’s man. He wasn’t tall, just under 6′ but his hands were huge!

Our heavenly Father’s hands are big too. He says that he holds us in His hand, and no one can steal us out. His hands are my protection and my provision.

“ I give my sheep eternal life. They will never die, and no one can take them out of my hand. 29 My Father is the one who gave them to me, and he is greater than all. No one can steal my sheep out of his hand.” John 10:28-29 ERV

God, our loving heavenly Father, comes to make peace in the midst of the storm, bring restoration to the brokenhearted, give freedom to those who are imprisoned, healing to those who are infirmed and forgiveness to us all!

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me. He has chosen me to tell good news to the poor. He sent me to tell prisoners that they are free and to tell the blind that they can see again. He sent me to free those who have been treated badly 19 and to announce that the time has come for the Lord to show his kindness.” 20 Jesus closed the book, gave it back to the helper, and sat down. As everyone in the synagogue watched him closely, 21 he began to speak to them. He said, “While you heard me reading these words just now, they were coming true!” Luke 4:18-21 ERV

These words summarize the ministry of Jesus and even though his disciples were with Him daily they still didn’t fully understand his mission. We see that when they asked this about the blind man they encountered begging by the roadside.

“As Jesus walked along, he saw a man who had been blind since birth. 2 Jesus’ disciples asked, ‘Teacher, why was this man born blind? Was it because he or his parents sinned?’” John 9:1-2 ERV

The disciples were asking an honest question. They made an assumption that many of us make when we see someone who has met with misfortune; “they must have done something wrong, and God is punishing them”.

Listen to Jesus’ answer.

“‘No, it wasn’t!’ Jesus answered. ‘But because of his blindness, you will see God work a miracle for him. 4 As long as it is day, we must do what the one who sent me wants me to do. When night comes, no one can work. 5 While I am in the world, I am the light for the world.’ 6 After Jesus said this, he spit on the ground. He made some mud and smeared it on the man’s eyes. 7 Then he said, ‘Go and wash off the mud in Siloam Pool.’ The man went and washed in Siloam, which means “One Who Is Sent.” When he had washed off the mud, he could see.” John 9:3-7 CEV

Our heavenly Father is not guilty of causing evil. He is guilty of unconditional love, sacrificing His only Son to reconcile us to Himself and of giving us His word for instruction and correction. He does not tempt us with evil but is responsible for every good and perfect gift that comes into our lives.

Thank you, Father, for holding me in Your hands. I can trust Your love!

A Reliable Cure

Have you ever been to the doctor and had them ask you about your medical history and your family’s medical history? Lots of questions and sometimes you wonder if they are even listening as you answer.

This morning, I have a question for you. Do you have heart trouble? Are there triggers in your life that have or are now affecting your heart?

Then let me give you a prescription for the cure.

“Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.” John 14:1 KJV

Jesus spoke these words to his disciples right before His crucifixion. If anything would cause “heart trouble” for them it would be this, but Jesus’ command was don’t be troubled.

“My son, pay attention to my words and be willing to learn; Open your ears to my sayings. 21 Do not let them escape from your sight; Keep them in the center of your heart. 22 For they are life to those who find them, And healing and health to all their flesh. 23 Watch over your heart with all diligence, For from it flow the springs of life.” Proverbs 4:20-23 AMP

King Solomon knew the way to prevent “heart trouble” was to pay attention to God’s word. It provides health and healing to all who choose to live by it.

The dosing instructions for this prescription were given to Joshua by the Lord.

“Always remember what is written in that book of law. Speak about that book and study it day and night. Then you can be sure to obey what is written there. If you do this, you will be wise and successful in everything you do. 9 Remember, I commanded you to be strong and brave. Don’t be afraid, because the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:8-9 ERV

Twice a day are the instructions but more if needed – day and night.

So, if you are experiencing heart trouble this morning, I’m sending you to my cardiologist, He’s never lost a patient. You have a private consultation with Him, listen to His instructions.

“ I have told you all these things while I am with you. 26 But the Helper will teach you everything and cause you to remember all that I told you. This Helper is the Holy Spirit that the Father will send in my name.

27 “I leave you peace. It is my own peace I give you. I give you peace in a different way than the world does. So don’t be troubled. Don’t be afraid. 28 You heard me say to you, ‘I am leaving, but I will come back to you.’ If you loved me, you would be happy that I am going back to the Father, because the Father is greater than I am. 29 I have told you this now, before it happens. Then when it happens, you will believe.” John 14:26-29 ERV

I guarantee you that Jesus knew about situations that could weaken the heart. He had faced physical and spiritual attacks, mental temptations and reputation destroying lies. In the final night before His death, He was preparing the disciples to withstand the attacks of the heart.

“ I have told you all this now to prepare you. So when the time comes for these things to happen, you will remember that I warned you… 33 “I have told you these things so that you can have peace in me. In this world you will have troubles. But be brave! I have defeated the world!” John 16:4 & 33 ERV

Take the Great Physician’s prescription and keep your heart strong!

Awesome Loving Father

Yesterday I had the wonderful opportunity to minister to and with the ladies of DCF in Phoenix. I always enjoy sharing God’s word with these special women.

This morning when I opened my laptop, there on the screen were the key verses from yesterday’s teaching.

“Praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ for the spiritual blessings that Christ has brought us from heaven! 4 Before the world was created, God had Christ choose us to live with him and to be his holy and innocent and loving people. 5 God was kind and decided that Christ would choose us to be God’s own adopted children. 6 God treated us with undeserved grace because of the Son he dearly loves, and so we should praise God.” Ephesians 1:3-6 CEV

Think about that – before the world was created; before there was a sky or stars, land or sea, before the elephants or eels, before the apples or the peaches; before the redwoods or the ponderosa pines, God choose us to become His children.

We have been in God’s heart and on His mind for longer than the world has existed. Amazing!

We are not an afterthought, an oops, a mistake; we are planned by God from the beginning to be His chosen ones.

“God always does what he plans, and this is why he appointed Christ to choose us.” Ephesians 1:11 CEV

As I said to those sweet women, there were lots of things in life I was never chosen for; I wasn’t homecoming queen or picked first for the neighborhood softball team, I wasn’t selected for honors choir, nor did I sit as first chair clarinet in high school band.

But I was chosen and so were you!

Chosen to be a part of God’s family; chosen to be loved; chosen to receive spiritual blessings in heavenly places.

“We have everything we need to live a life that pleases God. It was all given to us by God’s own power, when we learned he had invited us to share in his wonderful goodness. 4 God made great and marvelous promises, so his nature would become part of us. Then we could escape our evil desires and the corrupt influences of this world.” II Peter 1:3-4 CEV

I will be sharing more with you from this teaching in the days ahead, but for now, let these words “Before the world was created, God had Christ choose us” settle deep in your heart.

We have been chosen by God!

Something Great!

Have you ever had one of those moments when you knew that something great was about to happen? Something life changing.

Excitement, anxiousness, joy, exhilaration. Heart-racing, palm-sweating, nervous laughter, anticipation.

Now you know how my friend felt as he stood at the bottom of the mountain that day. He knew His life was about to change – it could go either way. His best dreams could come true, or his encounter could result in his total disgrace.

No, I don’t know him personally, but I’ve read his story so many times that I feel I do.

“As Jesus came down the mountain, he was followed by large crowds. 2 Suddenly a man with leprosy came and knelt in front of Jesus. He said, “Lord, you have the power to make me well, if only you wanted to.”

3 Jesus put his hand on the man and said, “I want to! Now you are well.” At once the man’s leprosy disappeared. 4  Jesus told him, “Don’t tell anyone about this, but go and show the priest that you are well. Then take a gift to the temple just as Moses commanded, and everyone will know that you have been healed.” Matthew 8:1-4 CEV

There is so much to unpack in these four verses.

Jesus had just finished preaching the Sermon we’ve been studying. He’s followed by the crowd.

SUDDENLY.

A man with leprosy rushes up to Jesus. He had to move quickly, or Jesus disciples and some other well-meaning Jews would have had him removed from Jesus’ presence. The leper was unclean and not allowed personal contact with anyone, let alone, a teacher as great as Jesus.

I believe this leper had been standing back in the shadows listening to Jesus teach. He was hiding because of his condition but he was listening. He heard Jesus say, “Ask and it will be given you, search and you will find, knock and the door will open”.

And here he was asking, seeking and knocking. “You have the power to make me well, if you want to”.

Then something amazing happened. A true God moment. Jesus reached out and TOUCHED the man who had been untouchable. Jesus was the first one, in years, to physically connect with this man. He had longed for the touch of his family and friends. A handshake, a pat on the back, a gentle hug or a tender kiss but no one ventured to touch him except Jesus.

“I want to” Jesus said. “Now you are well”.

I can’t help but wonder how many other people in that crowd had issues, concerns, situations that were eating away at them the way leprosy was destroying this man’s body. They had heard Jesus say ask but the only record of anyone asking is this man, the leper.

What Jesus told him to do next is important. He told the man not to tell anyone about his healing until he had gone to the priests to be examined. According to Jewish law, a leper had to be pronounced clean by the examination of a priest or he would not be allowed back in general population. To do otherwise could have resulted in his death.

Oh, dear friend, is there anything that has you living as an outcast? It may be a bitterness that has festered for so long, a sense of unworthiness, a heartache or an action from your past that has you living in shame.

Come to Jesus, suddenly, right now and let Him touch you and cleanse your hurt and pain.

“He touched me, Oh, He touched me. And oh, the joy that floods my soul. Something happened and now I know. He touched me and made me whole.”*

Something great is about to happen!

Fruit Inspection

Dave and I grew up on the Arizona/California border. We were very familiar with the Agriculture Inspection Station at the border.

“Do you have any fruits or vegetables to declare?” That was always the question.

The Department of Agriculture didn’t want any pests transported from other states to the fruit and vegetable growing in California.

Did you know Jesus has something to say about fruit inspection?

He has been teaching on the mountain for three chapters now. We’ve heard him teach on adjusting our attitudes, how to pray, how not to worry about anything and not to judge others. All daily life, practical teaching from the heart of God.

As Jesus comes to the end of this time with the multitude He gives us a strict warning.

“Watch out for false prophets! They dress up like sheep, but inside they are wolves who have come to attack you. 16  You can tell what they are by what they do. No one picks grapes or figs from thornbushes. 17 A good tree produces good fruit, and a bad tree produces bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot produce good fruit. 19  Every tree producing bad fruit will be chopped down and burned. 20  You can tell who the false prophets are by their deeds.” Matthew 7:15-20 CEV

What Jesus came to share was good news and it brings a harvest of good fruit. The Apostle Paul wrote to the Christians in Galatia about the fruit that God’s Spirit produces in our lives.

“ God’s Spirit makes us loving, happy, peaceful, patient, kind, good, faithful, 23 gentle, and self-controlled. There is no law against behaving in any of these ways.” Galatians 5:22-23 CEV

This fruit is very similar to what Jesus described as the be-attitudes. It’s so important that we don’t allow our fruit to become infected by the harmful pests of pride, anger, fear, greed, malice and gossip. These things can and will ruin our fruit.

“Not everyone who calls me their Lord will get into the kingdom of heaven. Only the ones who obey my Father in heaven will get in. 22 On the day of judgment many will call me their Lord. They will say, ‘We preached in your name, and in your name we forced out demons and worked many miracles.’ 23  But I will tell them, ‘I will have nothing to do with you! Get out of my sight, you evil people!’” Matthew 7:21-23 CEV

God will judge, not us. In our day, we have seen examples of false prophets. Jim Jones is one of the first to come to mind. “We preached in your name”.

Our job is to be fruitful. Jesus gave us a clear message on that.

“Stay joined to me, and I will stay joined to you. Just as a branch cannot produce fruit unless it stays joined to the vine, you cannot produce fruit unless you stay joined to me. 5 I am the vine, and you are the branches. If you stay joined to me, and I stay joined to you, then you will produce lots of fruit. But you cannot do anything without me.” John 15:4-5 CEV

We don’t judge, but we do inspect fruit.

One Small Thing

Yesterday afternoon I had errands to run. First a stop at the bank, then the grocery store, Walgreens and finally my hair salon.

My purchase at Walgreen’s was $21.99. The cashier gave me several bills and one penny change. I looked to find a donation jar where I could deposit my penny but there was none.

I remembered hearing a story once about a wealthy man who said he would stop and pick up a penny when he saw one on the ground. It reminded him to be thankful because on that penny he read the words “in God we trust”. Not his success or the amount in his bank account but it was in God that he placed his trust.

After hearing this story, I stop and pick up the coins I find on the ground and keep them in my pocket during the day. They remind me to trust God, whatever the day may bring.

So, I deposited the penny on top of a trash receptacle with a prayer that someone would find it and it would remind them to put their trust in God. Silly I know, but that’s what I felt led to do.

On to my hair appointment. When I got there my stylist was visibly upset. I asked what was wrong. She choked back the lump in her throat and told me that one of her clients had died, and she had just found out that a dear friend was dying, and another friend had just learned she had cancer. She was overwhelmed.

The Lord put it on my heart to pray for her. I asked her if we could pray, and she grabbed my hand. I prayed and she sensed a real peace and comfort that only God can give. As we walked to the wash basin she said, “you know some people wouldn’t have done that, thank you”.

Small things. A penny. A prayer.

And that leads us into this morning’s verses.

“12 “Do for others what you would want them to do for you. This is the meaning of the Law of Moses and the teaching of the prophets.

13 “You can enter true life only through the narrow gate. The gate to hell is very wide, and there is plenty of room on the road that leads there. Many people go that way. 14 But the gate that opens the way to true life is narrow. And the road that leads there is hard to follow. Only a few people find it.” Matthew 7:12-14 ERV

Jesus was all about touching people’s lives. Intervening in their mess. Providing healing, forgiveness, help and comfort. He showed them that they could trust in God. He lived the golden rule, Do for others what you would want them to do for you. He is our example. If we want people to be kind and caring, we need to be that for them.

Jesus came to show us that we don’t have to do life on our own. We can trust our heavenly Father. Jesus openly said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. The only way to the Father is through me.” John 14:6 ERV

Jesus was the narrow way He was speaking of. He still is!

It’s not by good works, church attendance, charitable donations, self-sacrifice that we find the narrow way. It’s only found by following Jesus. That doesn’t make us narrow-minded; no, just focused on the path that leads to life eternal.

Look for the small things that will show others “the way”.

Time for an “I” Exam

Just last week Dave went to the optometrist. He was able to pick up his new glasses on Friday. It’s interesting how just a little adjustment can make such a big difference in clearer vision.

Jesus is still teaching on the mountain and in today’s verses He’s called us all in for an “I” exam.

“ Don’t condemn others, and God won’t condemn you. 2  God will be as hard on you as you are on others! He will treat you exactly as you treat them.

3 You can see the speck in your friend’s eye, but you don’t notice the log in your own eye. 4 How can you say, “My friend, let me take the speck out of your eye,” when you don’t see the log in your own eye? 5 You’re nothing but show-offs! First, take the log out of your own eye; then you can see how to take the speck out of your friend’s eye.” Matthew 7:1-5 CEV

We have to remember that all of these verses from the last few days flow together from one teaching. Although little segments can be pulled out for study, they must stay in context with the whole message.

Jesus has already taught us on having a proper attitude, not being a showoff and being light and salt in a world that has spent so much time in darkness. He’s emphasized that we are to love as the Father loves. It only follows that He would instruct more thoroughly on how to treat and deal with others.

Don’t judge unless we would like to be judged. (I didn’t say it, Jesus did.)

Yikes, that one hits pretty close to home. I think we all can fall into that dangerous ditch of judging. That’s why we need to have our eyes examined. It’s easy to see the faults in others; sometimes we even magnify them, and then we overlook our own faults.

But Christ saw that we all need a Saviour.

“Christ had no sin, but God made him become sin so that in Christ we could be right with God.” II Corinthians 5:21 ERV

“Honor God by accepting each other, as Christ has accepted you.” Romans 15:7 CEV

” But I am giving you a new command. You must love each other, just as I have loved you. 35 If you love each other, everyone will know that you are my disciples.” John 13:34-35 CEV

“ If you think you are better than others, when you really aren’t, you are wrong. 4 Do your own work well, and then you will have something to be proud of. But don’t compare yourself with others.” Galatians 6:3-4 CEV

“God treats everyone alike. He accepts people only because they have faith in Jesus Christ. 23 All of us have sinned and fallen short of God’s glory. 24 But God treats us much better than we deserve, and because of Christ Jesus, he freely accepts us and sets us free from our sins.” Romans 3:22-24 CEV

Now, don’t choke on your coffee when you read “He treats everyone alike”. God’s grace and mercy is extended to all of us. “God loved the WORLD, so He gave his only Son”.

We don’t have to agree with what everyone says or does. God forbid, because then we would be agreeing with sin and that’s what God has delivered us from.

But, we do need to see through His eyes and love the sinner as He did for us without judging and condemning them. In God’s eyes, sin is sin. No big, no little – just sin that stops us all from having a personal relationship with Him. All sin is forgivable and once forgiven gives us a relationship with the Father.

Let’s have the Father give us an “I” exam and fit us with proper lens so that we see the world through His eyes!

Why Worry

Let me tell you about my morning.

I heard the coffeemaker beep that it was done; I was still in bed. I got up and came to the living room as is my custom, was going to pour a cup of coffee and have my prayer time. Instead, I laid down on the couch for a while longer – prayed and dozed off.

Now it’s over an hour later and I got up, grabbed my first cup of coffee and had a little twinge of guilt over resting so long. A little worried that the blog was getting out so late.

That’s when the Lord gently quieted my heart, and I read what I was intended to share with you. So here are Jesus’ words to all of us today.

“If you decide for God, living a life of God-worship, it follows that you don’t fuss about what’s on the table at mealtimes or whether the clothes in your closet are in fashion. There is far more to your life than the food you put in your stomach, more to your outer appearance than the clothes you hang on your body. Look at the birds, free and unfettered, not tied down to a job description, careless in the care of God. And you count far more to him than birds.

27-29 “Has anyone by fussing in front of the mirror ever gotten taller by so much as an inch? All this time and money wasted on fashion—do you think it makes that much difference? Instead of looking at the fashions, walk out into the fields and look at the wildflowers. They never primp or shop, but have you ever seen color and design quite like it? The ten best-dressed men and women in the country look shabby alongside them.

30-33 “If God gives such attention to the appearance of wildflowers—most of which are never even seen—don’t you think he’ll attend to you, take pride in you, do his best for you? What I’m trying to do here is to get you to relax, to not be so preoccupied with getting, so you can respond to God’s giving. People who don’t know God and the way he works fuss over these things, but you know both God and how he works. Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. Don’t worry about missing out. You’ll find all your everyday human concerns will be met.”

34 “Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes.” Matthew 6:25-34 MSG

Don’t worry. Don’t get worked up.
