A Full Plate

That definitely described my week. All the little things that suddenly needed my attention, pushing the more important issues aside, although, only momentarily, distracted me for a while.

My new personal computer kept dropping its wireless internet connection when I was in the middle of something important, like my morning blog. A vehicle that needed to be taken to the shop for service and then picked up again, an afterwork hair appointment that I forgot about until I had started dinner and needed to rush out to be there on time.

A glitch in my banking technology, a new program that needed an outside source verification. All the little things that added to the “to-do’s” of the work day.

” When someone says they have a ‘full plate,’ they’re often indicating that they’re busy, overwhelmed, or managing multiple priorities simultaneously.”

That was me!

Yesterday, my boss called in the morning and asked if I had any more room on my plate. With a chuck I said, “Yes, for a few more things but the alligators are now swimming around my feet”.

None of these things are/were life-threatening, not serious things that some of my friends are going through. Just time-robbing disturbances. And yes, I realized what I needed to do.

“…we must catch the little foxes that destroy the vineyards.” Song of Solomon 2:15 CEV

We must take all those little annoyances, those thoughts of being overwhelmed and hold them captive.

“You will keep the man in perfect peace whose mind is kept on You, because he trusts in You. Trust in the Lord forever. For the Lord God is a Rock that lasts forever.” Isaiah 26:3-4 NLV

“Wait for the Lord. Be strong. Let your heart be strong. Yes, wait for the Lord.” Psalm 27:14 NLV

When the Lord repeats something He isn’t wasting words – it’s for emphasis. Strong emphasis!

Don’t get caught up in the busy-ness and stress. Step away. Capture the anxious thoughts and keep your mind set on the Lord.

In the middle of it all, I stepped outside, took a breath of fresh air, and said a prayer. I’m happy to report that when I left work my plate was empty and the alligators were gone.

Have a great weekend! Trust in the Lord!!

Faithfulness

“In the morning when I rise, In the morning when I rise, In the morning when I rise, give me Jesus! Give me Jesus, give me Jesus. In the morning when I rise just give me Jesus!”

Just a little chorus we used to sing but more than that it’s an attitude of the heart and the prayer on my lips each day. Just give me Jesus!

Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not.
23 They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.24 “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “Therefore I hope in Him!” Lamentations 3:22-24 NKJV

I cannot explain the joy in my heart each day as I experience the Lord’s faithfulness – it’s new every morning.

Things don’t have to be going right – everything doesn’t need to be perfect, far from that. It’s in the imperfection of the moment, in the struggles, in the times when hope begins to fade that the Father’s great faithfulness undergirds and gives strength.

“O God, listen to my cry! Hear my prayer! From the ends of the earth, I cry to you for help
when my heart is overwhelmed. Lead me to the towering rock of safety, for you are my safe refuge, a fortress where my enemies cannot reach me. Let me live forever in your sanctuary, safe beneath the shelter of your wings!” Psalm 61:1-4 NLT

Let me pray for you.

“Father God, these friends of mine, some I have never met need to draw strength from you today. Some are discouraged, some are frightened, some feel lost and alone. By your Spirit, lead them to the rock of your safety. Be their portion. Show them your faithfulness. Lift their heads and show them Your unfailing love. In Jesus name.”

In the morning when I rise, all I need is Jesus!

Because He Lives

The perfect life!

No one has a perfect life not this side of heaven anyway. But we do have Jesus’ promise to be of good cheer in the face of tribulation (troubles and trials) because He has overcome them all and in Him we are complete.

Heartaches and disappointments are inevitable but they don’t have to destroy or permanently damage.

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God has great mercy, and because of his mercy he gave us a new life. This new life brings us a living hope through Jesus Christ’s resurrection from death. 4 Now we wait to receive the blessings God has for his children. These blessings are kept for you in heaven. They cannot be ruined or be destroyed or lose their beauty.

5 God’s power protects you through your faith, and it keeps you safe until your salvation comes. That salvation is ready to be given to you at the end of time. 6 I know the thought of that is exciting, even if you must suffer through different kinds of troubles for a short time now.” I Peter 1:3-6 ERV

My mom was in her late eighties and she would have the pastor and his wife over for evening coffee. Before they left she would ask the pastor’s wife to sing this song. Her body was growing weaker, yet her mind was strong. She knew her trust was placed firmly in the Lord.

She wasn’t living her perfect life but she was living a perfect faith in her Lord.

“God sent his son, they called him Jesus,

He came to love, heal and forgive.

He lived and died to buy my pardon,

An empty grave is there to prove my savior lives.

Because he lives

I can face tomorrow

Because he lives

All fear is gone

Because i know he holds the future

And life is worth the living

Just because he lives

How sweet to hold a newborn baby,

And feel the pride and joy he gives,

But greater still the calm assurance:

This child can face uncertain day because he lives. (repeat chorus)”

“I’ve told you all this so that trusting me, you will be unshakable and assured, deeply at peace. In this godless world you will continue to experience difficulties. But take heart! I’ve conquered the world.” John 16:33 MSG

Don’t let fear and heartache overwhelm you! Look up – He Lives and He lives to bring us to a place of victory.

My Dad

Bear with me this morning, please. I had to get a new computer and spent most of the afternoon yesterday keeping it loaded up with the things that are important to me. Still getting the feel for it this morning so I am recycling a blog I posted about 9 years ago…I hope you relate to it.

I have a few questions for you this morning. If I asked you to tell me about your dad how would you describe him? I imagine you could tell me about his character and you could give me physical description but what more could you tell me.

Do you know about his childhood, his dreams and ambitions? Is/was he a fisherman or hunter, cowboy or city man – Ford, Chevy or Dodge – techie or handyman – quiet or outgoing?

How well do you know him?

He had a great deal to do with shaping your life into the person you are today. If he was there all the time or absent from your life, he still had a big part in how you turned out.

In all of Jesus teaching He represented his Father. He said he came for one purpose – to do the will of His Father.

“Later, Jesus talked to the people again. He said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never live in darkness. They will have the light that gives life.”

13 But the Pharisees said to Jesus, “When you talk about yourself, you are the only one to say that these things are true. So we cannot accept what you say.”

14 Jesus answered, “Yes, I am saying these things about myself. But people can believe what I say, because I know where I came from. And I know where I am going. But you don’t know where I came from or where I am going. 15 You judge me the way people judge other people. I don’t judge anyone. 16 But if I judge, my judging is true, because when I judge I am not alone. The Father who sent me is with me. 17 Your own law says that when two witnesses say the same thing, you must accept what they say. 18 I am one of the witnesses who speaks about myself. And the Father who sent me is my other witness.”

19 The people asked, “Where is your father?”

Jesus answered, “You don’t know me or my Father. But if you knew me, you would know my Father too.” John 8:12-19 ERV

It’s important that we know the Father. The way we get to know Him better is by watching the Son. It’s important that we study Jesus and his life so that we can model our lives after his and in so doing we will also be reflecting the Father.

“Do as God does. After all, you are his dear children.” Ephesians 5:1 CEV

How has the Father shaped your life? Do you reflect His nature? We have been given the Father’s spiritual DNA, divine nature ability. So let me ask you now, tell me about your heavenly Father.

Getting to know Jesus, we get to know the Father.

Love So Amazing

Wondering what word of encouragement I could give you this morning; what would support those going through tough times and what will bring hope and refreshing. Well, here it is – God’s love is more than enough!

“Praise the Lord, because he is good! His faithful love will last forever! 2 Everyone the Lord has saved should repeat that word of thanks. Praise him, all who have been rescued from the enemy. 3 He gathered his people together from many different countries. He brought them from east and west, north and south. 4 Some of them wandered in the dry desert. They were looking for a place to live, but they could not find a city. 5 They were hungry and thirsty and growing weak. 6 Then they called to the Lord for help, and he saved them from their troubles. 7 He led them straight to the city where they would live.

8 Thank the Lord for his faithful love and for the amazing things he does for people. 9 He satisfies those who are thirsty. He fills those who are hungry with good things.” Psalm 107:1-9 ERV

He is faithful, loving, kind and always attentative when we call! God’s love is amazing!

“My soul, praise the Lord! Every part of me, praise his holy name! 2 My soul, praise the Lord and never forget how kind he is! 3 He forgives all our sins and heals all our sicknesses. 4 He saves us from the grave, and he gives us love and compassion. 5 He gives us plenty of good things. He makes us young again, like an eagle that grows new feathers.

6 The Lord does what is fair. He brings justice to all who have been hurt by others. 7 He taught his laws to Moses. He let Israel see the powerful things he can do. 8 The Lord is kind and merciful. He is patient and full of love. 9 He does not always criticize. He does not stay angry with us forever. 10 We sinned against him, but he didn’t give us the punishment we deserved. 11 His love for his followers is as high above us as heaven is above the earth. 12 And he has taken our sins as far away from us as the east is from the west.” Psalm 103:1-12 ERV

Love so amazing, so divine!

Tell The Next Generation

I know I’ve told you this before, but Dave and I have three young grandchildren who live within an hour from us.

It’s great living this close and being with them as often as we can, in fact, they are going for a “sleep over” next weekend. Something they, and us, are very excited about. Yesterday, we spent the day with our grandson. He celebrated is 10th birthday just last week.

We went to the large aquarium in our area and then out to lunch. He said it was a best birthday and that’s what we’d hoped it would be. Making memories and sharing love is the legacy we want to leave with all our grandchildren, grown and littles.

I was reading one of my favorite Psalms, one that I share the second half with all you on a regular basis, but this morning it’s the first half of the Psalm that I’d like to share.

“I will praise you, my God and King, and always honor your name. I will praise you each day and always honor your name. You are wonderful, Lord, and you deserve all praise, because you are much greater than anyone can understand.

Each generation will announce to the next your wonderful and powerful deeds. I will keep thinking about your marvelous glory and your mighty miracles. Everyone will talk about your fearsome deeds, and I will tell all nations how great you are. They will celebrate and sing about your matchless mercy and your power to save.

You are merciful, Lord! You are kind and patient and always loving. You are good to everyone, and you take care of all your creation. 10 All creation will thank you, and your loyal people will praise you. 11 They will tell about your marvelous kingdom and your power. 12 Then everyone will know about the mighty things you do and your glorious kingdom.
13 Your kingdom will never end, and you will rule forever.” Psalm 145:1-13 CEV

If we tell our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren about our favorite things – fishing, camping, trips, ice cream, sports and vacations, we should most definitely tell them about our wonderful Lord and heavenly Father.

We tell them about Jesus, not in a condemning way, but we tell them of His wonderful love, mercy and grace. We tell them stories of what God has done in our lives so that they will know they can depend on Him in every situation. We tell them that God never wants them to be afraid, and He will never leave them alone.

Make it a point to tell the next generation of the Goodness of God!

Coffee is Good – Jesus is Better

Each morning, I wake up I praise the Lord for His faithfulness and love!

Admittedly some mornings I would like to stay in bed a little longer and some mornings I do just that. But there isn’t a day that I don’t thank Him for the many blessings I have received and the courage and confidence that I have in His love.

I have some dear close friends with whom I share my heart, but none is sweeter than the friend I have in Jesus. Those words are some that I read in Psalm 144 this morning.

“I praise you, Lord! You are my mighty rock, and you teach me how to fight my battles.
You are my friend, my fortress, where I am safe. You are my shield, and you made me the ruler of our people.” Psalm 144:1-2 CEV

Praise the Lord! He is my Rock. He prepares me for war. He trains me for battle.
He loves me and protects me. He is my safe place high on the mountain. He rescues me. He is my shield. I trust in him. He helps me rule my people.” Psalm 144:1-2 ERV

Two translations of the same verse. One is written in the first person – I praise you Lord and the other is written in the third person – Me telling you what God has done for me. Both convey the same message of God’s love and protection, but I was drawn to the CEV writing because that’s how I feel about the Lord – “You are my friend”.

We have many praise and worship songs that were written in the last twenty years, more contemporary music styles yet one old hymn that I dearly love is “What A Friend” we have in Jesus. This song was written in 1855, the words still ring true in my heart.

“What a friend we have in Jesus,
all our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit,
O what needless pain we bear,
all because we do not carry
everything to God in prayer!

2 Have we trials and temptations?
Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged;
take it to the Lord in prayer!
Can we find a friend so faithful
who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness;
take it to the Lord in prayer!

3 Are we weak and heavy laden,
cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Savior, still our refuge–
take it to the Lord in prayer!
Do your friends despise, forsake you?
Take it to the Lord in prayer!
In his arms he’ll take and shield you;
you will find a solace there.”

Imagine the heart of the man that penned these words. Had he known lack of peace, trials, temptations, betrayal, weakness, discouragement and sorrow? He knew there was one place to find solace and comfort, “What a Friend we have in Jesus, take it to the Lord in prayer”.

Coffee is a good way to start the day but spending time with Jesus is better! Take it to the Lord in prayer!!

Blessed Wherever You Are

Our lives are blessed by the Lord so that we can be a blessing wherever we are. Blessed to be a blessing!

I was thinking about Barnabus. His name was Jonas, but he was renamed by the apostles.

And Joses, who was also named Barnabas by the apostles (which is translated Son of Encouragement),” Act4:36 NKJV

Barnabus was the one who brought Saul, later named Paul, to the apostles after his conversion on the road to Damacus. He was Paul’s traveling partner on some of his missionary journeys. He was blessed with a gift to encourage and he used that gift to bless others.

We might not all be blessed with the gifts of prophecy, miracles, words of wisdom or words of knowledge but we are all blessed to be a blessing to others.

“And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, because you obey the voice of the Lord your God:

“Blessed shall you be in the city, and blessed shall you be in the country.

“Blessed shall be the fruit of your body, the produce of your ground and the increase of your herds, the increase of your cattle and the offspring of your flocks.

“Blessed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl.

“Blessed shall you be when you come in, and blessed shall you be when you go out.

“The Lord will cause your enemies who rise against you to be defeated before your face; they shall come out against you one way and flee before you seven ways.

“The Lord will command the blessing on you in your storehouses and in all to which you set your hand, and He will bless you in the land which the Lord your God is giving you.

“The Lord will establish you as a holy people to Himself, just as He has sworn to you, if you keep the commandments of the Lord your God and walk in His ways. 10 Then all peoples of the earth shall see that you are called by the name of the Lord, and they shall be afraid of you. 11 And the Lord will grant you plenty of goods, in the fruit of your body, in the increase of your livestock, and in the produce of your ground, in the land of which the Lord swore to your fathers to give you. 12 The Lord will open to you His good treasure, the heavens, to give the rain to your land in its season, and to bless all the work of your hand. You shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow. 13 And the Lord will make you the head and not the tail; you shall be above only, and not be beneath, if you]heed the commandments of the Lord your God, which I command you today, and are careful to observe them. 14 So you shall not turn aside from any of the words which I command you this day, to the right or the left, to go after other gods to serve them.” Deuteronomy 28:1-4 NKJV

The Lord blesses us so the world will see that we are called to be His. We share, we love, we encourage because He does that for us!

In the city, in the fields, coming in and going out we are blessed. Encourage others with the goodness of God!

Recovering What’s Been Stolen

For about the last week or so I’ve been dwelling on a heartbreaking event in King David’s life. Actually, this event occurred before he had been crowned king.

King Saul was ruthlessly pursuing David and trying to kill him and his men. David found favor with the king of the Philistines. (Remember, David had killed Goliath just a few years earlier, so this was quite amazing.) David and his men and their families lived in the town of Ziklag.

Achish, the Philistine king, was going to battle against King Saul. David and his 600 men volunteered to fight with them but the commanders of Achish’s army refused to fight with David, so Achish told David to take his men and go home.

In the 3 days it took for David and his men to return to Ziklag, his town had been attacked, burned to the ground and all the livestock plus the women and children had been stolen by the Amalekites. When David and his men saw what had happened to their families they were devastated, overcome with grief, immobilized by sorrow.

“Then David and the people with him cried out in a loud voice until they had no more strength to cry…And David was very troubled because the people talked about killing him with stones. For all the people were very angry in their sorrow for their sons and daughters. But David got his strength from the Lord his God.” I Samuel 30:4-6 NLV

Everything was lost. They were dejected, angry and ready to lash out. BUT, David drew on God’s strength and wisdom.

” Then David asked the Lord, “Should I go after this army? Should I meet them in battle?” The Lord said to him, “Go after them, for you will catch them for sure. And you will be sure to save all the people.” I Samuel 30:8 NLV

David and 400 of his men went in pursuit of the Amalekites, 200 men were too weary to fight so they stayed behind. With God’s help, the Amalekites were killed and David “recovered all” that had been stolen.

David took back all that the Amalekites had taken, and saved his two wives. 19 Nothing was missing, small or large, sons or daughters, food or anything that had been taken. David returned with all of it. 20 And he took all the sheep and cattle. The people drove those animals in front of him, and said, “This is what belongs to David.” verses 18-20 NLV

Jesus said this about a thief, about the devil.

“The robber comes only to steal and to kill and to destroy. I came so they might have life, a great full life.” John 10:10 NLV

And the Apostle Paul said this.

“Dear friends, never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God. For the Scriptures say, “I will take revenge; I will pay them back,” says the Lord.” Romans 12:19 NLV

I was thinking about things that have been stolen – peace of mind, hope, security, joy, relationships, health, finances… Like David, we seek the Lord and He will fight for us. He will make the thief repay and He will bless us with a great full life!

God’s Love NEVER Fails

Absolutes! I love that God’s word is filled with absolutes. Always – All – Everyone – Whoever – Never. These are the words that jump off the page each time I read my Bible.

“Praise the Lord! He is goodGod’s love never fails. Praise the God of all gods. God’s love never fails. Praise the Lord of lords. God’s love never fails. Only God works great miracles. God’s love never fails. With wisdom he made the sky. God’s love never fails. The Lord stretched the earth over the ocean. God’s love never fails. He made the bright lights in the sky. God’s love never fails. He lets the sun rule each day. God’s love never fails. He lets the moon and the stars rule each night. God’s love never fails.” Psalm 136:1-9 CEV

God’s love never fails!

Our actions don’t determine God’s love for us. The Apostle Paul wrote that even when we were sinners and alienated from God He loved us. Jesus said, “For God SO loved the world, that He gave His only Son”.

God’s love never fails!

“But God showed how much he loved us by having Christ die for us, even though we were sinful.” Romans 5:8 CEV

I had someone tell me once, “I’m not sure I even believe in God”. I think my answer may have shocked them. I said, “That’s ok, God believes in you and if you ask Him to show you that He’s real, He will”.

He shows us His reality and His love on a daily basis. It’s in every sunrise and sunset; it’s in the stars and the oceans, and the ebb and flow of the waves.

Only God works great miracles. God’s love never fails.” Psalm 136:4

“God saw the trouble we were in. God’s love never fails. 24 He rescued us from our enemies.  God’s love never fails. 25 He gives food to all who live. God’s love never fails. 26 Praise God in heaven! God’s love never fails.” Psalm 136:23-26 CEV

There has never been a day in our lives that God hasn’t had love for us. He may not always be pleased with our actions, but He has never not loved us.

Praise God in heaven! God’s love never fails!!
