Are You With Or In?

Each morning I spend quite a bit of time looking for the right image to go with each day’s blog. I hope that the image used will stick with you through the day and cause you to remember the teaching I share.

When I saw this image, I knew I had to use it. This little guy is “with” the ducks and “in” the water.

Have you ever thought about the difference between “with” and “in”?

If you have water in a glass and you take it to the table it is “with” you. But you can leave that room and leave the water behind. However, if you drink the water it is “in” you. It gives life to your cells and nourishes your body.

All through the Old Testament we find that God was “with” the people. When Jesus came one of his names was Emmanuel, God “with” us and wherever Jesus went He took God with Him. It is the presence of God that changes our lives.

But once we accept Jesus as our Saviour the Scriptures says that we are “in” Him.

“As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, 7 rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding [ain it with thanksgiving.

8 Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ. 9 For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead ]bodily; 10 and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power.” Colossians 2:6-10 NKJV

His fullness fills us with His life, His love, His character. Wherever we go we take Christ in us. We bring His nature, His life to every circumstance and person we come in contact with.

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. In Christ, God has given us every spiritual blessing in heaven. 4 In Christ, he chose us before the world was made. He chose us in love to be his holy people—people who could stand before him without any fault. 5 And before the world was made, God decided to make us his own children through Jesus Christ. This was what God wanted, and it pleased him to do it. 6 And this brings praise to God because of his wonderful grace. God gave that grace to us freely. He gave us that grace in Christ, the one he loves.” Ephesians 1:3-6 ERV

We don’t need to beg God for be “with us”. We need to be aware, vitally aware, He is always “in us” because we are “in Christ”. He goes with us everywhere, we can’t ever be separated from Him.

“This message is the secret truth that was hidden since the beginning of time. It was hidden from everyone for ages, but now it has been made known to God’s holy people. 27 God decided to let his people know just how rich and glorious that truth is. That secret truth, which is for all people, is that Christ lives in you, his people. He is our hope for glory. 28 So we continue to tell people about Christ. We use all wisdom to counsel every person and teach every person. We are trying to bring everyone before God as people who have grown to be spiritually mature in Christ.” Colossians 1:26-28 ERV

He lives “in” us so that we can take Him to the world! Let the Lord shine through you today.

Time With The Father

I like something I saw on Facebook a while back. It went like this: Religion is a man sitting in church thinking about fishing – Relationship is a man fishing thinking about God!

I believe in Christian fellowship and I believe in attending church but if it’s done from ritual or tradition it really isn’t profitable. However, when it’s done because of relationship with the Father, church attendance is a wonderful place of strength and growth and it is also a wonderful place of service. But I’m not here to talk about church attendance.

I’m asking you today to see how many times you find yourself thinking about the Father and how many times you find yourself reaching out to someone in a gesture of His love; not in a religious, preachy sort of way but just genuine caring and concern. A smile, a hug, a phone call or a note, being patient with someone who you feel is incompetent or unprepared; taking time to help someone else even if it means you are detained from doing what you “want” to do – look for the God directed interruptions to your day.

“Then the King will say to those on His right hand, ‘Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: 35 for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; 36 I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.’
37 “Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink? 38 When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You? 39 Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ 40 And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’” Matthew 25:34-40 NJKV

I also want you to see how many times the Father interrupts your day with His thoughts and reminders that He cares about the smallest details in your life; a creative thought that makes work more efficient, a friendly stranger giving you their place in a long line, finding something you needed for less that you expected to pay, a great parking space, a smoother flow of traffic, a call from a friend, a smile or soft word of love from someone you hold dear. These are all ways that the Father reaches out to us! You might think that God doesn’t really care about the little things but you’re wrong – He’s the master of the tiny details.

“Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will. 30 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.” Matthew 10:29-31 NKJV

If He sees the sparrow fall and He does; He knows the smallest detail about your life and He is invested in showing you His love!

Maybe it’s time to go fishing. Whatever you do, enjoy your relationship with the Father today!!

Please and Thank You

Yesterday we had a very pleasant experience. We stayed at a Raddison Hotel in Yuma. Everyone we dealt with was very kind and polite. This was such a pleasant change to what we so often experience.

Is it just me or have the rest of you noticed that a large portion of society has forgotten how to be polite? Good manners aren’t archaic; they aren’t old fashion; they should be as en vogue today as they were 100 years ago. Saying please and thank you should be as natural as breathing; showing respect to parents, elders, teachers and those in authority is a sign of good upbringing. We shouldn’t demand, we should ask.

“You can be certain that in the last days there will be some very hard times. 2 People will love only themselves and money. They will be proud, stuck-up, rude, and disobedient to their parents. They will also be ungrateful, godless, 3 heartless, and hateful. Their words will be cruel, and they will have no self-control or pity. These people will hate everything that is good. 4 They will be sneaky, reckless, and puffed up with pride. Instead of loving God, they will love pleasure. 5 Even though they will make a show of being religious, their religion won’t be real. Don’t have anything to do with such people.” II Timothy 3:1-5 ERV

These verses were written almost 2000 years ago and yet they sound like the reports on the evening news. We need to raise our children and influence our grandchildren to avoid such characteristics as are listed above. It’s not our words that will influence and teach, it’s by our actions. Do you see anything in those verses that would point out areas of correction to you? If so, repent and change. Live a life that will be a walking example to those around you.

Make sure you are thankful to God as well. He and He alone is worthy of all honor and praise and glory!

“Offer praise to God our Savior because of our Lord Jesus Christ! Only God can keep you from falling and make you pure and joyful in his glorious presence. Before time began and now and forevermore, God is worthy of glory, honor, power, and authority. Amen.” Jude 24-25

Gratitude is a heart condition. Too often we fail to appreciate the kindnesses of others. It’s important that we don’t adopt the attitude that much of society is preaching – entitlement. When we feel we are “owed” something, we’re entitled to it for one reason or another, we often become demanding and rude. We really need to guard against this mindset.

“My dear brothers and sisters, don’t be fooled about this. Everything good comes from God. Every perfect gift is from him. These good gifts come down from the Father who made all the lights in the sky. But God never changes like the shadows from those lights. He is always the same. God decided to give us life through the true message he sent to us. He wanted us to be the most important of all that he created.” James 1:16-18 ERV

Every good gift we receive comes from our heavenly Father. It may bring it through the hands of an employer, a friend or loved one but ultimately He was the source.

Let’s show our gratitude but expressing sincere appreciation for the likenesses we receive. That way we can be an example of the Father.

Mark the Moment

When Dave and I came to Rio Rico five years ago we noticed that many of our neighbors’ homes and homes in other areas were marked by large stacks of rocks in their yards. The proper term for these piles of rocks is “cairn”.

For hundreds and even thousands of years they have been used as trail markers, burial markers and monuments to designate a specific event. When I asked a couple of neighbors why they had stacks of rocks in their yards the answer was simple, “we have lots of rocks and we like how they look”. No particular reason other than aesthetics, they are yard art.

However, I remembered a time when the Lord had the children of Israel make a stack of stones and it was a memorial to His faithfulness. The Israelites were crossing the Jordan River and entering their “promised land”. This was the place the Lord had promised Abraham, Isaac and Jacob that He would give to the Jewish people. This morning I was reading in Joshua and came across those verses again.

“Joshua chose twelve men; he called them together, 5 and told them:

Go to the middle of the riverbed where the sacred chest is, and pick up a large rock. Carry it on your shoulder to our camp. There are twelve of you, so there will be one rock for each tribe. 6-7 Someday your children will ask, “Why are these rocks here?” Then you can tell them how the water stopped flowing when the chest was being carried across the river. These rocks will always remind our people of what happened here today.

8 The men followed the instructions that the Lord had given Joshua. They picked up twelve rocks, one for each tribe, and carried them to the camp, where they put them down.” Joshua 4:4-8 CEV

Twelve stones. One for each tribe of Israel. These stones would be a remembrance for their children, grandchildren and all future generations that the Lord had kept His promise and brought them to this land.

When we came to our new home we felt we had come to the Lord’s promised land. It had taken us seven years to sell our home and make it back to Arizona. God was faithful and brought us here.

There is now a stack of seven stones under the mesquite tree in our front yard. To the passers-by it’s just another stack of stones but to me it is a reminder of the seven years it took us to get here. It’s a monument of God’s faithfulness and abiding love. Each time I walked to the mailbox, each time I walk to the neighbors, each time I take Glory out for a walk I see that stack of stones and I remember.

Do you have something special that you need to be reminded of? Is there a time that you prayer for something specific and it took a miracle of God to see it happen? Have you made an indelible mark in your memory of God’s faithfulness? Is there something you can do to that will be a physical memorial your children or grandchildren? Is there some sort of keepsake that reminds you of God’s provision that can be handed down through the generations or maybe it’s just a stack of stones in the yard?

Make a monument to the Lord’s provision.

“Then Joshua told the people: Years from now your children will ask you why these rocks are here. 22-23 Tell them, “The Lord our God dried up the Jordan River so we could walk across. He did the same thing here for us that he did for our people at the Red Sea,[g 24 because he wants everyone on earth to know how powerful he is. And he wants us to worship only him.” Joshua 4:21-24 CEV

Time to Play and Pray

What a wonderful weekend!

We were with our youngest daughter’s family; Kaci, Stephen, Sam and Kristine. It is such a joy to live closer to our daughters and be able to spend time with them. Those years in Montana had us living too far away. We can be to everyone in just a couple of hours, even our son is only a couple hours by air.

This last weekend was NASCAR weekend in Phoenix. As you know, Dave and I are big race fans. That’s how we roll. The kids all grew up knowing the names of car drivers and their team owners. So, this race was special. It was Kaci’s first time to a NASCAR race. She compared it to going to the Super Bowl for someone who grew up in a football family. Stephen enjoyed it as well. It was a great day!

Saturday night was play time with the grandkids. Sam had been telling me on the phone that he wanted us to watch Lightning McQueen when we came. Now most of you with littler children may have seen the Disney movie, Cars, but we hadn’t. Sam had several favorite spots and wanted to make sure we saw them all. Little Kristine would shout “go, go, go” during some of the race scenes and then dance with the music. It was a family event. Sam knew we were going to the race the next day and I think this was his way of joining in.

This was one of the first times I had seen the grandkids since my back procedure and it was so special to be picking them up, having them crawl over my lap, wiggle and squirm and playing toys on the floor without pain. Thank you Lord!

But the best time of all was putting them to bed, getting them in their jammies and saying prayers. Kristine cuddled in during prayer time, gave tight hugs and kisses and then she was off to sleep. Sam picked out a book to read and then we had prayers. He prayed along with me. He had so many things on his mind he wanted to thank Jesus for, people he wanted to pray for and things he wanted to pray about. We were in no rush. There was plenty of time to make sure everything was covered in prayer.

What a blessing!

I couldn’t help but think that our heavenly Father’s heart must have been filled to overflowing with the love and childlike faith of my little grandson. I know mine was. Such a joy to see the love for the Lord that this little man has. It was definitely a weekend of making family memories.

These two verses came to mind as I was thinking on our time together.

“Teach your children right from wrong, and when they are grown they will still do right.” Proverbs 22:6 CEV

“Let the message about Christ completely fill your lives, while you use all your wisdom to teach and instruct each other. With thankful hearts, sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. 17 Whatever you say or do should be done in the name of the Lord Jesus, as you give thanks to God the Father because of him.” Colossians 3:16-17 CEV

Whatever we do can, and should, be a time to thank the Lord for His love and provision. It may be something as simple as watching a movie, going to a race or saying bedtime prayers. They are all opportunities to give thanks.

A Promise Doesn’t Change

Today we continue with the story of Balaam and Balak. Yesterday I left you with a talking donkey.

Balaam, the man of God, the man with the talking donkey, still needed to meet with King Balak. Balak was determined to have the Israelites cursed. This was his only hope to keep his kingdom and power.

Read Numbers 21-24 for the full story.

Balak took Balaam to several locations where he could see the Israelites’ camp. It was vast. Each time Balaam was supposed to make a statement proclaiming a curse on them. Each time Balaam’s words brought blessing and Balak’s anger. Each time Balaam told Balak that he could only say what God had told him to say and that he could not curse what the Lord had blessed!

It’s here in Numbers 23:19 that we find my favorite verse in the Bible.

“Balaam went back and saw him and his officials standing beside the offerings. Balak asked, “What did the Lord say?”

18 Balaam answered: ‘Pay close attention to my words—
19 God is no mere human! He doesn’t tell lies or change his mind. God always keeps his promises.

20 “My command from God was to bless these people, and there’s nothing I can do to change what he has done. 21 Israel’s king is the Lord God. He lives there with them and intends them no harm.” Numbers 23:17-21 CEV

Do you see this? God doesn’t tell lies, He doesn’t change his mind and He ALWAYS keeps his promises! If this verse isn’t true, if God changes his mind and can lie, then we can’t have confidence in anything else in the Bible. But, this verse is true! God keeps his word.

Amazing!!

Have you ever had anyone tell lies about you or try to destroy you by ruining your reputation? This king wanted these people cursed, he wanted to annihilate them and have the Israelites wiped from the face of the earth. He seemed to be stronger and better equipped than Moses was. But…God had blessed them and so the king could do them no harm.

How encouraging are these verses to us? God, the Father, who gave blessings to the Israelites has also made promises and given blessings to us. He doesn’t change His mind and He doesn’t lie. Our enemies may want us cursed but God is on our side.

“A thief comes only to rob, kill, and destroy. I came so that everyone would have life, and have it in its fullest.” John 10:10 CEV

“Keep your lives free from the love of money. And be satisfied with what you have. God has said, “I will never leave you; I will never run away from you.” 6 So we can feel sure and say, “The Lord is my helper;  I will not be afraid. People can do nothing to me.” Hebrews 13:5-6 ERV

“People will make weapons to fight against you, but their weapons will not defeat you. Some people will say things against you, but anyone who speaks against you will be proved wrong.” The Lord says, “That is what my servants get! They get the good things that come from me, their Lord.” Isaiah 54:17 ERV

God’s word is filled with His promises. Promises He made and will not break. Blessings He will keep forever. God’s word will never fail us, we can be confident of that.

“Your kingdom will never end, and you will rule forever. Our Lord, you keep your word
    and do everything you say.” Psalm 145:13 CEV

You’re Being Followed!

Have you ever had that feeling that someone is following you? It can be a bit unnerving if you are in an area that isn’t familiar to you.

God promises to see that we are followed wherever we go.

This morning I had a bit of a dilemma. I was reading the lesson of the prodigal son in Luke 15 and also reading Psalm 23 on the goodness of the Lord. Both of these Scriptures stir my heart each time I read them. I wanted to share them both. I can’t read them just once and then go on; I re-read these verses and ask “Lord, what do you want me to learn today?”

As I was praying about which Scriptures to share I kept coming back to Psalm 23.

“You, Lord, are my shepherd. I will never be in need.
2 You let me rest in fields of green grass. You lead me to streams of peaceful water,
3 and you refresh my life. You are true to your name, and you lead me along the right paths. 4 I may walk through valleys as dark as death, but I won’t be afraid. You are with me, and your shepherd’s rod makes me feel safe.

5 You treat me to a feast, while my enemies watch. You honor me as your guest,
    and you fill my cup until it overflows.
6 Your kindness and love will always be with me each day of my life, and I will live forever in your house, Lord.” Psalm 23 CEV

I like reading this version because it’s so personal. “You lead me”. Everything about this psalm is personal. It’s not about they or them – what they say – it’s about You and me.

Jesus is the you and I am the me!

Did you notice what it says in verse 3? You are true to your name…in the Old Testament, at different times, the Lord would tell the Israelites about the diverse attributes of His name. He is the Lord but He described Himself as our provider, our healer, our present help in times of trouble, our shepherd, our mighty God, our banner, the I AM, our peace, and the One who is always there. That’s why King David could start this psalm with “You are my shepherd. I will never be in need”. Whatever it is we need and whenever we find ourselves lacking, the Lord is there.

If I walk through dark valleys, valleys as dark as death or if I am face to face with my enemies I have no reason to fear because Jesus, my shepherd is right there with me.

His love and kindness is with me each day of my life, following me and then when my life is over I get to live in His house forever!

Love and kindness each day! In other words, words that we are more familiar with, this is translated goodness and mercy shall follow me. God doesn’t send us out on our own. He follows us with His unfailing love and infinite power of forgiveness.

There’s an obscure verse in Isaiah which tells us that God is keeping watch behind us. He protects us from a rear assault – goodness and mercy as there to be the rear guard.

“But you will not go out in a hurry. You will not leave as if you were running for your lives. For the Lord will go before you. And the God of Israel will keep watch behind you.” Isaiah 52:12 NLV

I pray you will be very aware that you are being followed today. Goodness and mercy are always there.

Call For Assistance

We had an interesting morning yesterday. We had some errands to run in Nogales, it’s only 15 miles south of us. An easy drive. We figured to get everything done, maybe stop for lunch and then be home in a couple of hours.

It didn’t quite happen that way.

We had just gotten off the interstate and on to the surface street when the tire on the front passenger side blew! Dave was able to keep the truck under control and get us to the side of the road. Thank God it hadn’t blown a few moments earlier when we were traveling 75 mph on the freeway.

Dave got out to check the damage. The tire was shredded. It was a little more than we could deal with on our own so we called Roadside Assistance. Only the second time in all our years of driving that we’ve had to do that. Anyway…talking to someone who wasn’t familiar with the area and the names of the road at first seemed challenging and then she said “I’m sending you a link in a text, click on the link and I will be able to locate you.”

For those of you who have On-Star or other vehicle navigation locating devices this isn’t very interesting but for us, it was technology at it’s finest. Then she told us she would be contacting providers in the area and we would receive a text message as soon as someone was on the way.

We were able to stay updated on the app and knew when the driver would be arriving. There was an indicator of our vehicle on the map, along with the make and model of our truck. While we were waiting some nice people stopped and offered to help. Got to love helpful people.

We were expecting a tow truck, not that we needed to be towed but the information we received was that it was a towing company who had responded. We were surprised when a little Jetta pulled up in front of us, backed up on the shoulder, the driver jumped out in his safety reflective vest, got a jack out of his trunk and went to work.

He was such a pleasant young man. He seemed to enjoy his job and in no time at all we were ready to head down the road.

I had several Scriptures come to mind as we sat there. Dave and I both told the Lord how grateful we were for our safety and His protection.

“You can go to God Most High to hide.  You can go to God All-Powerful for protection.
2 I say to the Lord, “You are my place of safety, my fortress. My God, I trust in you.”
3 God will save you from hidden dangers and from deadly diseases. 4 You can go to him for protection. He will cover you like a bird spreading its wings over its babies. You can trust him to surround and protect you like a shield.” Psalm 91:1-4 ERV

“You have looked deep into my heart, Lord, and you know all about me. 2 You know when I am resting or when I am working, and from heaven you discover my thoughts. 3 You notice everything I do and everywhere I go. 4 Before I even speak a word, you know what I will say, 5 and with your powerful arm you protect me from every side.
6 I can’t understand all of this! Such wonderful knowledge is far above me.” Psalm 139-1-6 CEV

“Good will come to you in the city, and good will come to you in the country…6 Good will come to you when you come in, and when you go out.” Deuteronomy 28:3&6 NLV

I know the Lord is the originator of GPS tracking, God’s Protection Service. Long before On-Star He has been able to watch over all of us, His system doesn’t overload and shut down. He knows where we are!

As I said, I was expecting a tow truck but our help came in a Jetta. I love how the Lord continues to teach me each day to step outside of my preconceived ideas and just let Him work.

Before you head out today take time to thank the Lord for His protection. Let Him cover you with His wings, that is where we can safely dwell.

It’s Monday! Time To Sing

In a few moments the birds will begin to sing. Just before sunrise they join in chorus! What a great way to start the morning.

“I sing because I’m happy, I sing because I’m free
His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me, He watches me
His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches
I know He watches, I know He watches me”

Those are the words to the chorus of an old gospel favorite, His Eye Is on The Sparrow. I love the lyrics of that song. I was reminded of them again this morning as I was reading in Luke 12.

“Jesus said to his followers, “So I tell you, don’t worry about the things you need to live—what you will eat or what you will wear. 23 Life is more important than food, and the body is more important than what you put on it. 24 Look at the birds. They don’t plant, harvest, or save food in houses or barns, but God feeds them. And you are worth much more than crows. 25 None of you can add any time to your life by worrying about it. 26 And if you can’t do the little things, why worry about the big things?” Luke 12:22-26 ERV

I don’t know why we have been conditioned to dread Mondays. We HAVE to go back to work – how about adopting the attitude we get to go back to work? Like I said yesterday, there were days when we had no job. That leaves you with a desperate feeling. Having a job is better. Be thankful!

Those birds that sing each morning don’t differentiate their song because of what day it is on the calendar. No, they just sing every morning.

Monday is a day that always seems to be filled with so many challenges; spiritual, mental, physical and relational. So on Monday’s we need to be thinking like Jesus – we NEED the mind of Christ.

I know I’ve told you this before but I’ve heard it said they are 365 verses in the Bible that give us instruction on not worrying or becoming anxious or fearful. It seems we are a people prone to worry so God takes a lot of time to help us get past that.

“Always be glad because of the Lord! I will say it again: Be glad. 5 Always be gentle with others. The Lord will soon be here. 6 Don’t worry about anything, but pray about everything. With thankful hearts offer up your prayers and requests to God. 7 Then, because you belong to Christ Jesus, God will bless you with peace that no one can completely understand. And this peace will control the way you think and feel.
8 Finally, my friends, keep your minds on whatever is true, pure, right, holy, friendly, and proper. Don’t ever stop thinking about what is truly worthwhile and worthy of praise. 9 You know the teachings I gave you, and you know what you heard me say and saw me do. So follow my example. And God, who gives peace, will be with you.” Philippians 4:4-9 CEV

I remember the first time the Lord really flooded me with His peace. I had gone through a very difficult time physically and emotionally. I was hurting so deeply, I wondered if I could go on. I poured my pain out the Lord; I told Him I didn’t know how to get over the loss. I needed His help. Without it, I didn’t know what I would do.

I started focusing on the Lord and what He had done for me; what He endured for me, death; how much He loves me. I began to thank Him for His love that never ends, His ability to bring answers to my questions, His peace for turmoil and His comfort for my grief.

In my back yard that night I looked at the stars, thanking Him, praising Him, with tears still streaming down my cheeks, I was enveloped by the night and I felt God’s arms of comfort surround me and His peace pour over me. The peace that passes ALL understanding. But as long as I was going to think about me, my problems, my heart ache – I was unable to receive peace. As my thoughts focused on Jesus, the peace came.

Jesus knew we would need His peace. Some of his final words to his disciples were this:

“But the Holy Spirit will come and help you, because the Father will send the Spirit to take my place. The Spirit will teach you everything and will remind you of what I said while I was with you. 27 I give you peace, the kind of peace that only I can give. It isn’t like the peace that this world can give. So don’t be worried or afraid.” John 14:26-27

So as you start the week today, join with the birds in their chorus, keep your mind focused on Jesus and let Him bring you to a place of peace. God bless you all.

A Wagon Full of Broccoli

A story from the Bible that most of you are familiar with is the boy with the lunch of five loaves and two small fish. This morning I’m going to share a personal experience that is very similar.

My story is about a truck bed filled with broccoli.

Years ago, when our children were little Dave had a connection with a vegetable grower. He had acres of all kinds of vegetables and would occasionally tell Dave to stop by a field and “take as much as you want”. This particular day Dave came home with the bed of his mini truck filled with freshly harvested broccoli.

What in the world would we do with all this broccoli?

Since Dave was on his lunch break from work, the first thing I did was steam up a large pot of it, cover it with melted butter and served it up on his plate. He loved it! We were going through a particularly rough time financially. Work had been hard to find and we felt blessed that Dave had the job he did but after we paid the rent and utilities there was very little left for groceries. That made this lunch particularly delicious – God had supplied!

Before he left to go back to work, Dave unloaded the broccoli in the kids little red wagon. It was overflowing and I took the rest into the house, washed it and put it in the near empty refrigerator. And then I sent the kids up and down the block offering broccoli to any and all who wanted some.

As they left, I remembered the story of the little boy’s lunch and how Jesus blessed it and it multiplied.

“Late in the afternoon, the twelve apostles came to Jesus and said, “No one lives in this place. Send the people away. They need to find food and places to sleep in the farms and towns around here.”

13 But Jesus said to the apostles, “You give them something to eat.”

They said, “We have only five loaves of bread and two fish. Do you want us to go buy food for all these people?” There are too many! 14 (There were about 5000 men there.)

Jesus said to his followers, “Tell the people to sit in groups of about 50 people.”

15 So the followers did this and everyone sat down. 16 Then Jesus took the five loaves of bread and two fish. He looked up into the sky and thanked God for the food. Then he broke it into pieces, which he gave to the followers to give to the people. 17 They all ate until they were full. And there was a lot of food left. Twelve baskets were filled with the pieces of food that were not eaten.” Luke 9:12-17 ERV

This is the story I read as part of my morning devotions today and every time I read it, it reminds me of how the Lord provided for us with a wagon of broccoli. As the kids headed off with their wagon I remembered praying, “Lord, I’m sharing this broccoli like the boy shared his lunch. Thank you for providing for my family. Thank you for giving us something to go with the broccoli to make a proper meal”.

When the kids got home they were very excited because the neighbors were all so happy to take some of the treasure from their wagon. We certainly didn’t want to waste anything the Lord had provided. So, the proper thing to do was to share.

I put the kids to down for their naps and went about my afternoon chores. Shortly before Dave was to be home from work there was a knock at the door. It was a friend; he had just come from the meat packing plant where he had picked up a beef they had butchered. He gave me a dozen packages of ground beef. He had cheese, butter and milk too – he was a dairyman and he had brought some of his surplus to share with us.

I was overwhelmed by God’s goodness. We had given broccoli and had received all the makings for a full dinner! Like the little boy who had given his lunch and received back more than he had given up, we received so much more than we had given.

I’ve never forgotten the lessons of trusting and giving that the Lord taught me in those early days of our marriage. God has always been faithful to His word and He has never abandon or deserted us.

“My God will use his glorious riches to give you everything you need. He will do this through Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19 ERV

I don’t know the needs that you may have today but I know my God can and does bring the supply. Trust Him, give Him what you have – it may be a small lunch or a wagon full of broccoli – and watch what He will do.
