When Things Go Wrong

There were lots of images I could have used for this morning’s blog but I thought a picture of Elvis, smiling, in a cowboy hat was a good way to start the day.

Growing up I often thought that things going wrong was God’s way of teaching me something. I was mistaken.

As I got older and wiser, I realized that some things that go wrong are a result of our lack of knowledge, our poor planning or our outright stubbornness. I also learned from God’s word that we have a real enemy, who we can’t see, that is out to steal, kill and destroy. If he can’t kill us he certainly wants to render us useless.

“A thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy. But I came to give life—life that is full and good.” John 10:10 ERV

The Bible is filled with people who had circumstances in life go wrong.

  1. Joseph was sold into slavery
  2. Moses had to lead a million grumbling people
  3. Ruth’s husband died
  4. David faced a giant
  5. Daniel was carried away as a prisoner of war
  6. Hannah was barren
  7. Jesus was born during the cruelty of Roman rule in Israel
  8. A young Jesus went missing & his parents didn’t know where he was
  9. John the Baptist was thrown into prison and then beheaded
  10. Jesus was constantly harrassed by the religious leaders
  11. The disciples were in a storm at sea and nearly sank
  12. Peter was beaten and thrown in prison
  13. Paul was beaten, stoned, imprisoned and ship wrecked

These circumstances were not easy situations to deal with but each of them came to a positive end. In each occurrence the Father had a plan to rescue and restore. Each one of these people, people just like you and me, looked to the Lord for help and found it. They were never deserted by God or left to handle things on their own.

“Keep your lives free from the love of money. Be happy with what you have. God has said, ‘I will never leave you or let you be alone.’ So we can say for sure, ‘The Lord is my Helper. I am not afraid of anything man can do to me.’” Hebrews 13:5-6 NLV

I know I quote these verses frequently and that’s because they are life verses for me. They have brought me through some really tough times, and brought me through with peace. We can spend so much of life chasing after financial gain that we lose sight of ouf Father’s provision. We can make money our god and be miserable.

However, when we keep our focus on the Lord and His presence in our lives and things go wrong we can be at peace. We can trust that God is with us and He will be our deliverer. He will be our help.

“Jesus understands every weakness of ours, because he was tempted in every way that we are. But he did not sin! 16 So whenever we are in need, we should come bravely before the throne of our merciful God. There we will be treated with undeserved kindness, and we will find help.” Hebrews 4:15-16 CEV

When things go wrong we don’t have to go with them. We can come to the Maker of the Universe, the Almighty God who just happens to be our heavenly Father and when we do we will find all the help we need!

He’s reaching out to us; we simply need to take His hand.

The Candy Cane

Have a cup of coffee with me this morning as I share “The Legend of the Candy Cane”. Every year I share the story in one fashion or another. Since so many of you are new readers this year I thought I should share it again.

Over thirty years ago I was given a little lapel pin at Christmas. It looked like a cute little candy cane. However, when I held it upside down it was in the shape of a “J”. It was attached to a little card which told the story of how it came to be.

“I am the good shepherd. I know my sheep, and they know me. 15 Just as the Father knows me, I know the Father, and I give up my life for my sheep. ” John 10:14-15 CEV

A few years later I was in a bookstore and found a wonderfully illustrated children’s book, “The Legend of the Candy Cane”. I bought it and it sits on our coffee table each year and I have read the story to our children and grandchildren. It’s a cute story of a confectioner who moves to a small town and sets up his shop. The winter is harsh and the town folks are feeling isolated and alone. The candy maker, with the help of a little girl from town, set out to do something to lift the spirits of their neighbors. They make candy canes. The confectioner tells the little girl the story behind his new candy as they work.

The story gave me an idea of how to share the message of Jesus with all I meet throughout the Christmas season. I have printed little cards, like the one picture above and attach each card to a candy cane with a red ribbon. I always have a supply of them in my purse or coat pocket and when I’m out and about I hand out candy canes to store clerks, waitresses, postal workers, anyone I have dealings with.

Handing out Candy Canes with this little message is a great way to share Jesus at Christmas. I even have a basket of them on the counter in our home to share with neighbors and friends who drop in.

Who doesn’t like candy at Christmas? The candy cane has been associated with Christmas for as long as I can remember. The story of the candy cane is one of Jesus and His saving grace. Find a way to have fun and share the love of Jesus with folks.

“His teachings are worth more than pure gold. They are sweeter than the best honey dripping from the honeycomb.May my words and thoughts please you. Lord, you are my Rock—the one who rescues me.” Psalm 19: 10 & 14 ERV

The story of Christmas is not only the greatest story ever told but it’s the sweetest!

(You can find a link to the book on my website page “I Like These”.)

Overwhelmed

The last month of this year, 2020, continues to be challenging. Frustrating. Emotionally difficult. Even overwhelming.

Holidays and life in general can do that too us. Finances, health issues, family, new jobs, finals, relationships, scheduling, legal threats, loneliness…these things can be overwhelming.

“o·ver·whelm: bury or drown beneath a huge mass. synonyms: swamp, submerge, engulf, bury, deluge, flood, inundate, defeat completely, overcome, move, stir, affect, touch, strike, dumbfound, shake, devastate, floor, leave speechless” Any of those sound familiar?

I know a good number of people that have and are experiencing this. For some it is temporary and they are able to shake it off and regain a sense of stability and clear headedness but for others it can linger on.

I’ve been there but that was a long time ago! I have found the answer to being overwhelmed.

“Please listen, God, and answer my prayer! 2 I feel hopeless, and I cry out to you from a faraway land. Lead me to the mighty rock high above me. 3 You are a strong tower, where I am safe from my enemies.4 Let me live with you forever and find protection under your wings, my God.” Psalm 61:1-4 CEV

In another translation of this verse it says “when my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to the rock that is higher than I”. Jesus tells us the Word of God is our rock or a firm foundation! In and through God’s word we are able to gain victory over those things that seem overwhelming.

“What can we say about all this? If God is on our side, can anyone be against us? 32 God did not keep back his own Son, but he gave him for us. If God did this, won’t he freely give us everything else?” Romans 8:31-32. CEV

This ties in with what we were discussing yesterday. When we begin to understand the depth of God’s love for us – the all encompassing compassion that He wraps us in – we are no longer the victim of overwhelming situations but we become the victor. We aren’t isolated to fight alone; we have God on our side!

No longer overwhelmed. I’d like to pray for you now.

Father, in the name of Jesus, I pray for all who are reading this and have been overwhelmed by circumstances in their lives. I don’t know them personally or their situations but You do. There is no time or distance in the realm of spiritual things so I thank you for touching their hearts, healing their hurts and bringing strength to their emotions. Your word states that “with God all things are possible”. I believe that and I pray that Your peace, the peace that goes beyond our natural understanding, will flood hearts now. I pray that they are no longer overwhelmed by circumstances but that their curcumstances are overwhelmingly defeat by Your love and power. Amen.

Was it you I was praying for?

Go to the Rock of God’s word. It will crush the attacks coming against you!

Love, Love, Love

Love, love, love – all you need is love!

If you are as old as I am you will probably hear the Beatles singing those words in your head. All you need is love…

That’s what Christmas is all about. It’s a time of showing love, a special time of year to recognize the most wonderful gift of love that mankind has ever known. The birth of a child, the birth of our Savior. God’s unconditional love in human form.

Jesus shows us the Father’s unconditional love in action.

God doesn’t quit loving us when we fail. These are the people Jesus loved; the woman who committed adultery, the tax collector who cheated hundreds, Peter who denied Him three times, the demon possessed, the outcasts and the half-breeds, even the criminals on the cross and the soldiers who crucified him. He loved them all!

The night before Jesus was crucified we find Him in the Garden of Gethsamane praying. He was praying for Himself, for His followers and for us. Yes, we were on His heart before we were even born.

“I am not praying just for these followers. I am also praying for everyone else who will have faith because of what my followers will say about me…23 I am one with them, and you are one with me, so that they may become completely one. Then this world’s people will know that you sent me. They will know that you love my followers as much as you love me. 24 Father, I want everyone you have given me to be with me, wherever I am. Then they will see the glory that you have given me, because you loved me before the world was created. 25 Good Father, the people of this world don’t know you. But I know you, and my followers know that you sent me. 26 I told them what you are like, and I will tell them even more. Then the love that you have for me will become part of them, and I will be one with them.” John 17:20-26 CEV

Jesus prayed that the world would know that the Father loves us as much as He loves Jesus. Think about that.

If the Father only loves us as much as He loved Peter, who denied knowing him, that would be something. He was forgiving, compassionate, non-condemning. But He loves us as much as He loves Jesus! Grab hold of that and don’t ever let it go. God, the Father, loves us as much as He loves Jesus and He thinks the best of us!

Now truly this is the gift of Christmas – God so loved the world that He gave! My prayer is that we come to understand how much He loves us and then we show that love to the world. This is the Apostle Paul’s prayer for us:

“I pray that Christ will live in your hearts because of your faith. I pray that your life will be strong in love and be built on love. 18 And I pray that you and all God’s holy people will have the power to understand the greatness of Christ’s love—how wide, how long, how high, and how deep that love is. 19 Christ’s love is greater than anyone can ever know, but I pray that you will be able to know that love. Then you can be filled with everything God has for you.20 With God’s power working in us, he can do much, much more than anything we can ask or think of.” Ephesians 3:17-20 ERV

Thank you Lord for flooding my life with Your love!

Not About Me

Every morning for the last nine plus years I have traded emails with a friend who lives in the Northwest. We share our morning “coffee”. She tells me all about her previous day and I tell her about mine.

There are days when one or the other of us start our email by saying “I need this to be all about me”. That’s what friends do!

We listen, without condemning. We don’t have to make things better or give advice sometimes we just need to listen. Many times at the end of one of those pour-your-heart-out exchanges we will say “thank you, I knew you would know what I should do” because once we’ve talked through things, although it’s in an email, and unburdened ourselves we know what to do.

Self-centeredness is never good for a relationship. True friendship, true love is selfless.

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son. Whoever puts his trust in God’s Son will not be lost but will have life that lasts forever.” John 3:16 NLV

God loved so much He sent His Son. When Jesus came to earth it wasn’t about Him it was about rescuing us.

“A thief comes only to rob, kill, and destroy. I came so that everyone would have life, and have it in its fullest.” John 10:10 CEV

When the angels filled the heavens two thousand years ago proclaiming the birth of Jesus, they gave “Glory to God in the Highest”. The message wasn’t about them – they were only the messengers.

We also have the opportunity to be messengers of God’s goodness and love. It’s not about me, it’s about what Jesus has done in our lives.

“You see, we don’t go around preaching about ourselves. We preach that Jesus Christ is Lord, and we ourselves are your servants for Jesus’ sake. 6 For God, who said, “Let there be light in the darkness,” has made this light shine in our hearts so we could know the glory of God that is seen in the face of Jesus Christ. 7 We now have this light shining in our hearts, but we ourselves are like fragile clay jars containing this great treasure. This makes it clear that our great power is from God, not from ourselves.” II Corinthians 4:5-7 NLT

We have a great treasure bottled up within us. It’s the light of Jesus, our Lord and Saviour. It’s not about me, it’s about His light shinging through me. I just want to be the vessel that brings His light to the world.

Receiving It All!

Often times during the Christmas season, the season of giving, another trait rears its ugly head. Greed or wanting to have it all is not a desirable characteristic.

However, a giving heart wants our loved ones to have all that we can possibly give. Having all and giving all come from to entirely different motivations. Wouldn’t it be strange if on Christmas morning when all the presents are passed out if we or one of our children took just one gift and without opening the rest said “this is enough for me, I don’t need any more” and pushed the rest of the gifts aside?

The giver of those gifts would be disappointed, I’m sure. Each gift had been hand picked, even hand designed and there they sit unopened and ignored. That would be so sad.

Truth be told we are all guilty of doing that with God’s gifts in one way or another.

“I pray that God will be kind to you and will let you live in perfect peace! May you keep learning more and more about God and our Lord Jesus.

We have everything we need to live a life that pleases God. It was all given to us by God’s own power, when we learned that he had invited us to share in his wonderful goodness. God made great and marvelous promises, so that his nature would become part of us. Then we could escape our evil desires and the corrupt influences of this world.” II Peter 1:2-4 CEV

God’s word says that He has given us EVERYTHING we need for this life but too many are willing to only open the gift of salvation and leave the others untouched. God gave us many great and precious promises so that we could live a daily life focused on His goodness and grace.

We accept that Jesus died to forgive our sins but then continue to live in guilt because of the things we’ve done. Along with salvation comes the gifts of peace of mind, joy, strength, freedom from fear, grace, mercy, protection, provision, rest and kindness.

Our heavenly Father has provided all of these through His promises. However, many times we leave these gifts unopened and ignored because we don’t have knowledge of them. If we don’t know the gifts have our name on them then we fail to receive what the Father has designed especially for us.

The verses above tell us that the Father has made many gifts available to us but we only discover that as we learn more and more about Him.

“We praise you, Lord God! You treat us with kindness day after day, and you rescue us.” Psalm 68:19 CEV

Day after day is giving us His kindness and his protection. Day after day He sends His joy and peace. Day after day He unfolds His love before us. He is a loving, patient Father and He wants to give us all we need to escape the corrupt influences of this world.

It isn’t greedy to take every gift the Father provides. Completely the opposite, it’s a sign of accepting His love, having it all.

A Good Day

The last couple of days I have had pictures from Christmases past show up on my memory page. I’m not surprised by how many of them have been from Christmas tree cutting adventures.

The second Christmas after Dave and I were married we went Christmas tree cutting with some of the members from our Sunday School class. I was seven and a half months pregnant. Our financial resources were slim but we had a full tank of gas in the truck and a tree permit only cost $3. Flagstaff was only a two and a half hour drive up the interstate. We were good to go and once we went we were hooked.

Amazing!

Forty-seven Decembers later it’s still one of my favorite things to do. We have cut our own tree about half, if not more, of those years.

What makes it a favorite thing? Well, the family is all together searching for the same thing, the perfect tree. There is an excitement to the search and it’s beautiful. The photograph I used for this morning’s post was taken on our tree cutting adventure in 2010 from a mountain just a few miles from our home in Montana.

God’s handiwork is breath-taking.

“It is wonderful to be grateful  and to sing your praises, Lord Most High! It is wonderful each morning to tell about your love and at night to announce how faithful you are. I enjoy praising your name to the music of harps, because everything you do makes me happy, and I sing joyful songs. You do great things, Lord.” Psalm 92:1-5 CEV

The verses above describe my heart as I sit here each morning sharing my thoughts with you. “It is wonderful each morning to tell about your love”. It is truly wonderful! I have learned and am still learning how to see my heavenly Father’s love in each day and through each circumstance. (Not all circumstances are caused by Him but He is always with me and taking me through each one.)

Each time I look at the image I used this morning I am amazed by God’s greatness to create such a scene of beauty and then I am overwhelmed when I realize that the God who created this marvelous view loves me beyond measure and has chosen to be my Father.

He loves you too!

With that realization, how can we do anything less than have a good day?

Everyday Life

The small details of everyday life are often miraculous!

We hear those stories of the Junior High Science Teacher who inspires a young student and then that student goes on to become an epidemiologist and their discoveries help millions of people. Or the High School Track Coach who challenges the relay runner to push just a little bit harder and then that track star goes on to win an Olympic medal.

These small but yet significant encouragements shape lives and inspire greatness.

The words “Mary, did you know?” filled my heart when I woke this morning. The answer to that question was “yes, she did”. An angel had told her the plans that God had for her and the baby she would carry.

“The angel greeted Mary and said, ‘You are truly blessed! The Lord is with you.’

29 Mary was confused by the angel’s words and wondered what they meant. 30 Then the angel told Mary, ‘Don’t be afraid! God is pleased with you, 31 and you will have a son. His name will be Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of God Most High. The Lord God will make him king, as his ancestor David was. 33 He will rule the people of Israel forever, and his kingdom will never end.'” Luke 1:28-33 CEV

Can you imagine how Mary must have felt? She was an ordinary girl, going about her daily routine but this day it was interrupted by an angel. Most likely she was a teenage girl who had heard the words of the Old Testament prophets who said that the Messiah would be born of a virgin. The Jewish people had been waiting for His coming for hundreds of years and now there was an angel standing before her telling her she was the one chosen to be His mother.

Yes, Mary knew!

I’m pretty sure that none of us have had an angel deliver us a message from the Lord, however, He speaks to us daily through His word.

“All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. 17 God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.” II Timothy 3:16-17 NLT

Every day when we open our Bibles and read what God inspired we are hearing His words and being taught by the Lord. He is interrupting our daily lives with His message. We can ignore that message or choose to obey it. God’s plans for us are good – in fact, the verse above says His word equips us for every good work.

Perhaps we will encourage and inspire others today or maybe God will send someone to inspire and encourage us. Everyday life is anything but ordinary when our hearts are open to God. Just ask Mary…

“Mary, did you know”?

Best Gifts of Christmas

Two years ago I had just published my first book, The Best Gifts of Christmas, Receiving and Giving God’s Best.

I just had to share with all of you some of the precious gifts that the Lord lavishes on us each and every day. I couldn’t think of a better time to bring these to your memory than during the holiday season.

I lived so many years of my Christian life not realizing that the Father wanted to overflow my life’s cup with His goodness. It’s so important to remind ourselves of the blessings God freely gives; it increases the depth of our relationship with Him.

My heart’s desire is to provide a brief teaching, each day of December, focusing on one of the Father’s many gifts and then to challenge each of us to apply what we’ve learned.

I had a woman tell me that she had read The Best Gifts of Christmas twice and was going to finish it a third time before the middle of November. She was sharing it with her granddaughter and encouraging her to use the practical application at the end of each day with her friends and classmates. That really touched my heart.

Another woman wrote that she had shared the book with her mother who was diagnosed with dementia. She said her mother could relate to day’s little devotional. It’s God’s word and His love that impact lives of all ages.

Here are some comments from others who participated in the daily reading last year.

“A great way to prepare your heart for the true meaning of the Season. Insightful and meaningful read” Lonny C.

“What I love about this book is the suggestions of Thought and Action. Anyone of any age can participate, bringing the celebration of Christmas to a whole nother level. A great way to touch lives with the Christmas spirit.” Wendy L.

“This book is very nicely done.  I gave several as Christmas presents to my friends and family.” Tom S.

“Our family loves the holiday season and last year I purchased this book to further enhance our holiday spirit. We are a family of six; from toddler to teenager and this book helped to spiritually encourage our entire household. Get those candles out and get ready for a month of tremendous gifts!!” Desiree P.

Over the River

We took Sam and Kristine back to their Mom, Dad and baby sister yesterday. The final stop of a wonderful weekend was at Dairy Queen for a chocolate Dilly Bar and a Cherry dipped cone. (just sorry I forgot to get pictures of that)

Yum!

Driving back home, Dave and I started talking about our grandparents and special memories we have from our childhood. He grew up with his grandparents, both sets, living in the same town while I didn’t. He got to see them every weekend for special times of Saturday night at the movies, sleepovers and root beer floats. I got to see my grandparents every few years and only for brief visits. I guess that’s why it’s so important to us to make the memories that we can with our grandchildren.

The words of a song came to mind last night as I was sitting on the couch reliving moments from the weekend.

Over the river and through the wood
To Grandfather’s house we go.
The horse knows the way
To carry the sleigh
Through white and drifted snow.

Over the river and through the wood —
Now Grandmother’s cap I spy!
Hurrah for fun!
Is the pudding done?
Hurray for the pumpkin pie!

These are only a couple of the verses from a poem written in 1844 by Lydia Child. Each verse bursts with the excitement of a child getting to see Grandfather and Grandmother on Thanksgiving.

There was a time when Dave and I lived in an area where our children and grandchildren had to travel through the white and drifted snow. Those were days of special memories with our oldest two grandchildren, grandchildren who now have families of their own. Times of sledding, tromping through the snow, cutting our own Christmas tree, hot chocolate and cinnamon rolls. Special memories, indeed!

However, I hope the greatest memories we are creating for our grandchildren are of Dave and I – our love for each other, our love for them and our love for the Lord! I remember my grandfather reaching across the breakfast table and taking my grandmother’s hand as they prayed before a meal. Nothing is more special.

“So commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these words of mine. Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders. 19 Teach them to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up. 20 Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates,” Deuteronomy 11:18-20 NLT

We should take every opportunity we have to tell our children and grandchildren we love them. Show them they are special and pray for them daily. That’s a foundation and a heritage that all of us can give – it requires no money but it brings lasting rewards.

“Father, we cover our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren with Your love and grace. May they grow in relationship with You – may they see that no one loves them more or has any greater plans for their success than You. Keep them safe and may they show Your love to the world around them. In Jesus name. Amen”

Write a note, send an email, make a call – tell your grandchildren how much you love them and that they are a blessing.
