Not A Game of Hide N Seek

When I was a kid we loved to play hide n seek. The neighbor kids would all come together in our front yard and we would scatter from there. Our houses had been built in a pecan grove so there were lots of trees to hide behind to avoid being caught.

We would play for hours. The darker it got the easier it was to hide. Then someone would turn on a porch light and the game was over.

As I was reading in Proverbs this morning, it dawned on me that the Holy Spirit is that porch light. Let me explain.

Jesus gave instruction to His disciples that when He left this earth the Holy Spirit would come and guide us into all truth.

“I have so much more to tell you, but it is too much for you to accept now. 13 But when the Spirit of truth comes, he will lead you into all truth. He will not speak his own words. He will speak only what he hears and will tell you what will happen in the future. 14 The Spirit of truth will bring glory to me by telling you what he receives from me.” John 16:12-14 ERV

There are so many times that I pray, “Holy Spirit, I need wisdom and I thank Jesus that you came to lead me into truth”.

It’s not a game of hide n seek. The Holy Spirit is available 24/7 to lead us. Let’s look at Proverbs 8.

“Listen, Wisdom is calling. Yes, Understanding is shouting for us…4 “I am calling out to all of you.  I am speaking to everyone. 5 You who are ignorant, learn to be wise. You who are foolish, get some common sense. 6 Listen, I have something important to say, and I am telling you what is right. 7 My words are true, and I will not say anything that is wrong.
8 Everything I say is right; there is nothing false or crooked about it. 9 These things are clear to any intelligent person.  They are right to anyone with knowledge. 10 Choose discipline over silver and knowledge over the finest gold. 11 Wisdom is better than pearls,
and nothing you desire compares with her.” Proverbs 8:1-11 ERV

The great thing about wisdom is that it isn’t hiding. Wisdom, God’s wisdom, is available to all of us.

“ Do any of you need wisdom? Ask God for it. He is generous and enjoys giving to everyone. So he will give you wisdom. 6 But when you ask God, you must believe. Don’t doubt him. Whoever doubts is like a wave in the sea that is blown up and down by the wind.” James 1:5-6 ERV

Ask God. He enjoys giving wisdom. How do you know it’s God? Well, the Bible says we will be led or our hearts will be guarded by peace. If you need to make a decision pray about it and then proceed in the direction that gives you peace. No peace, don’t do it.

I’ve heard people say, “I just had a gut feeling this was right” or “I felt uneasy about that, I should have gone with my heart”. When we ask for wisdom, we can trust God to give it. Don’t be tossed about like a wave in the sea.

Seeking God’s wisdom is not a game of hide and seek. It’s a life of trust and it’s better than gold!

First Words

This little one is our youngest great granddaughter. She’s about 16 months old.

Our daughter was on a facetime call and was trying to get her to say “Grama”. After much coaxing, she said those precious words. It was clear as a bell. They melted our daughter’s heart.

Do you remember hearing “first” words? Mama , dada – how about those precious three words “I love you”?

Stop and reflect for just a moment – go back and relive that joy and excitement. The thrill that came with those special moments.

Now, let me ask a simple question. What are the first words that come to mind when you open your eyes in the morning? First words are important, they can set the tone for our whole day.

For the past twenty plus years I have trained myself to commit those first moments of the day to saying, “Father, I love you. Jesus, I love you. Holy Spirit, I love you. Thank you for loving me”. Sadly, I allowed my first words for many years to express worry, frustration, regret and complaining.

I like focusing on God’s love much better than any of those other things.

“ Every tree is known by the kind of fruit it produces. You won’t find figs on thorny weeds. And you can’t pick grapes from thornbushes! 45 Good people have good things saved in their hearts. That’s why they say good things. But those who are evil have hearts full of evil, and that’s why they say things that are evil. What people say with their mouths comes from what fills their hearts.” Luke 6:44-45 ERV

Our spoken words have power. Power to encourage or to destroy. Power to heal or to wound. Solomon wrote in Proverbs that life and death are in the power of the tongue.

“Your words can be as satisfying as fruit, as pleasing as the food that fills your stomach. 21 The tongue can speak words that bring life or death. Those who love to talk must be ready to accept what it brings.” Proverbs 18:20-21 ERV

Words of love are precious. They are like good food, satisfying to the soul. They come from the heart.

“Wise people always think before they speak, so what they say is worth listening to. 24 Kind words are like honey; they are easy to accept and good for your health.” Proverbs 16:23-24 ERV

Kind words are therapeutic. They bring healing.

The Apostle Paul’s letters are filled with instruction for daily living. He told us we should imitate God the way a small child imitates their parents. He gave us this instruction about our words.

“ Everything you say and everything you do should be done for Jesus your Lord. And in all you do, give thanks to God the Father through Jesus.” Colossians 3:17 ERV

Honestly, I’m still working on that verse. Not everything I say or do brings honor to the Lord but I’m working on it. I want my heart and my words to give honor and glory to God. I know you do too.

May the first words we utter be words of love, words of healing, words of life.

The Night the Lights Went Out

No, it’s not a country song – it’s what’s going on in my living room. I was up having a cup of coffee and reading my Bible and the lights went out. All over our community it dark, except for the moon light and the stars.

Reminds of what Jesus told his disciples, “You are the light of the world”.

“ You are the light for the whole world. A city built on top of a hill cannot be hidden, 15  and no one lights a lamp and puts it under a clay pot. Instead, it is placed on a lampstand, where it can give light to everyone in the house.” Matthew 5:13-14 CEV

We need to shine brightly and provide light for those who are in the dark. They may be in the darkness of fear, worry, stress, or complacency. We are called to be a light of His love, peace, joy, kindness, forgiveness, mercy and grace.

“The Scriptures say, “God commanded light to shine in the dark.” Now God is shining in our hearts to let you know that his glory is seen in Jesus Christ.

7 We are like clay jars in which this treasure is stored. The real power comes from God and not from us.” II Corinthians 4:6-7 CEV

And just like that – the power has been restored!

Lights are on, the coffee is warming again but more importantly, our hearts should be warmed by the fire of His love.

Let someone warm up by the fire of grace that God has placed in your heart. Enjoy the day – I’ve got to dash and get ready for work.

No One Like You!

Who is like our God?

No one – there is no one like You. Those are the words that kept running through my mind in worship this morning – There is no one like You!!!

Amazing love, You gave Your life for me…there is none like You!

Amazing grace, You forgave all my sins…there is none like You!

Amazing joy, You put a new song in my heart…there is none like You!

Amazing relationship, You adopted me…there is none like You!

Amazing transformation, You made me a new creature in Christ…there is none like You!!

“O LORD, there is none like thee, neither is there any God beside thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears.” I Chronicles 17:20 KJV

“LORD God All-Powerful, there is no one like you. You are strong, LORD, and always faithful.” Psalm 89:8 ERV

“Remember what happened long ago. Remember, I am God and there is no other God. There is no other like me.” Isaiah 46:9 ERV

Oh Lord, we worship you this morning. Your word is our source of life and strength. You keep your word and your word directs us in relationship with you! How we praise You! You alone are worthy of all praise!

“You will do all these wonderful things because you said you would do them and because you want to do them. And you decided to let me know about all these things. 22 Lord GOD, this is why you are so great! There is no one like you. There is no god except you! We know that because of what we ourselves have heard about what you did.” II Samuel 7:21-22 ERV

There is no one like You! Amen and Amen.

The Note

I got up this morning thinking about what I needed to do today. The item at the top of my list is write thank-you’s.

Acknowledgement and appreciation is important. Without them we could develop an attitude of entitlement and selfishness. As a child, Mom made sure that we wrote our grandparents and other family members when they gave us a gift. Christmas, birthdays, graduations, etc. never passed without her nudging of “did you write your thank-yous”.

For as long as I can remember I have verbalized my gratitude when someone does something they don’t have to and assist me or make my job easier but saying “Thank you. I really appreciate that.” Those are not empty words, they are not cliche. They are a heartfelt expression of gratitude.

Why am I telling you this? Glad you asked.

I realized this morning that I do this very thing everyday when I write in my journal. Nearly every day the first two words I write are “thank You”… That’s probably the reason I spend so much time in the Psalms. David and the other writers continually expressed their thanks to the Lord.

“Praise the name of the Lord! He is kind and good.” Psalm 135:3 CEV

“Praise the Lord! He is good. God’s love never fails.” Psalm 136:1 CEV

“ Don’t worry about anything, but pray about everything. With thankful hearts offer up your prayers and requests to God. 7 Then, because you belong to Christ Jesus, God will bless you with peace that no one can completely understand. And this peace will control the way you think and feel.” Philippians 4:6-7 CEV

Gratitude removes worry and brings peace. Thankfulness puts our eyes on the blessing and the One who gave it to us and not on our own limitations.

Just yesterday I was reading about the miracle of the ten lepers who asked Jesus to heal them. It’s an interesting story of thankfulness.

“As he was going into a village, ten men with leprosy came toward him. They stood at a distance 13 and shouted, ‘Jesus, Master, have pity on us!’

14  Jesus looked at them and said, ‘Go show yourselves to the priests.’ On their way they were healed. 15 When one of them discovered that he was healed, he came back, shouting praises to God. 16 He bowed down at the feet of Jesus and thanked him.” Luke 17:13-16 CEV

Ten men were cleansed, only one came back to thank Jesus for what He had done. Look at Jesus’ reaction:

“17 And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine? 18 There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger. 19 And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.” Luke 17:17-19 AKJV

There’s a difference between being cleansed and being made whole. Cleansed or healed means the leprosy was gone. The dead and rotting flesh was healed but the man who returned with the grateful heart was made whole. This word indicates that missing body parts had been restored – instead of stubby fingers, whole fingers replaced them. Instead of a nose partially there, a “whole”ness came.

A miracle for sure. Healing and wholeness!

Write a note – say thank you – give glory to God and let the healing power of God’s love flow, unlimited power and peace!

Time to Dance

Dave and I were with friends on New Year’s Eve. We enjoyed their company and our conversation but the thing I enjoyed the most was when Dave and I danced.

We had a friend tell us that she loved watching us dance, not because we are great dancers, far from it. She went on to say “I can tell how much you love each other by the way you look into each other’s eyes when you’re dancing”. What a compliment!

This morning, I hope you hear the music. Can you hear the singing? It’s all around us. God is singing over us. It’s His serenade.

“The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.” Zephaniah 3:17

or another version puts it like this

“The LORD your God wins victory after victory and is always with you. He celebrates and sings because of you, and he will refresh your life with his love.” Zephaniah 3:17

Years ago, someone coined a phrase “march to beat of your own drum”. Well today I want to encourage you to “dance” to the tune of “His singing”. God is rejoicing over you and He loves you. It’s all unconditional – no strings attached but when He hears you say, “Father, I love you too.” It thrills His heart, just like your heart does when your kids crawl up in your lap or take you by the hand or call to say “I love you”.

So join in with the Father this morning. Sing a new song – a song of love and thankfulness.

“Tell everyone on this earth to sing happy songs in praise of the LORD. 5 Make music for him on harps. Play beautiful melodies! 6 Sound the trumpets and horns and celebrate with joyful songs for our LORD and King!” Psalm 98:4-6 ERV

“Praise his name by dancing and playing music on harps and tambourines.” Psalm 149:3 CEV

It’s time to get up and dance!

Too Soon

In my prayer time this morning I was talking with the Lord about having better clarity – seeing things the way He sees them. Understanding people from His perspective. It was then I remembered these verses:

“Show me your faithful love this morning. I trust in you. Show me what I should do.
    I put my life in your hands! 9 Lord, I come to you for protection. Save me from my enemies.
10 Show me what you want me to do. You are my God. Let your good Spirit lead me over level ground. 11 Lord, let me live so that people will praise your name. Show me how good you are and save me from my trouble. 12 Show me your love and defeat my enemies.” Psalm 143:8-12 ERV

Show me Lord, how I can be more like You.

Sounds like a good prayer doesn’t it? And it is but it doesn’t end there. I almost closed my Bible there and went back to my prayer for clarity and understanding but I felt the Lord leading me to read on, so I did.

I turned to Proverbs, the book of wisdom. Proverbs has 31 chapters, one for each day of the month and so I turned to chapter 2 since today is January 2nd.

“ Listen to wisdom, and do your best to understand. 3 Ask for good judgment. Cry out for understanding. 4 Look for wisdom like silver. Search for it like hidden treasure. 5 If you do this, you will understand what it means to respect the Lord, and you will come to know God.

6 The Lord is the source of wisdom; knowledge and understanding come from his mouth. 7 He gives good advice to honest people and shields those who do what is right. 8 He makes sure that people are treated fairly. He watches over his loyal followers.

9 If you listen to him, you will understand what is just and fair and how to do what is right. 10 You will gain wisdom, and knowledge will bring you joy.

11 Planning ahead will protect you, and understanding will guard you. 12 These will keep you from following the wrong path and will protect you from those who have evil plans.” Proverbs 2:2-12 ERV

I almost closed my Bible too soon. If I hadn’t read on, I would have missed God’s instruction on wisdom and understanding. I would have missed the answer to my morning prayer.

Kind of like spiritual GPS. We have a desired destination but if we don’t follow the instructions, we will probably get lost.

“Ask me, and I will tell you things that you don’t know and can’t find out.” Jeremiah 33:3 CEV

When we ask the Lord for direction and instruction it’s always best to listen for His answer. Don’t quit too soon!

Blessing of a Clean Slate

Happy New Year – A new year brings new hope.

Some of you have accepted Christ as your Savior this last year, this year is filled with new things as you start your walk with the Lord. Some of you came back to the Lord after being a prodigal – off doing your own thing – and this year is filled with new hope. Others of us have experienced trials and testing and have grown stronger in the Lord and this year holds new excitement and anticipation as we wait to see how our mighty God will move again.

“I heard a loud voice shout from the throne: God’s home is now with his people. He will live with them, and they will be his own. Yes, God will make his home among his people. 4 He will wipe all tears from their eyes, and there will be no more death, suffering, crying, or pain. These things of the past are gone forever.

5 Then the one sitting on the throne said: I am making everything new. Write down what I have said. My words are true and can be trusted. 6 Everything is finished! I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will freely give water from the life-giving fountain to everyone who is thirsty. 7 All who win the victory will be given these blessings. I will be their God, and they will be my people.” Revelation 21:3-7

As John recorded these words in the next to the final chapter in the Bible, we see God repeating that He WILL live with us and our past WILL be gone forever and our future with Him will be perfect – we win!

“So surely the blood sacrifice of Christ can do much more. Christ offered himself through the eternal Spirit as a perfect sacrifice to God. His blood will make us completely clean from the evil we have done. It will give us clear consciences so that we can worship the living God.” Hebrews 9:14 ERV

No, I’m not predicting the end of the world, just the end of a year. In front of us are new days with new hope, new excitement, new victories and new life in Christ.

“Anyone who belongs to Christ is a new person. The past is forgotten, and everything is new. 18 God has done it all! He sent Christ to make peace between himself and us, and he has given us the work of making peace between himself and others.” II Corinthians 5:17-18

Praise God for the blessing of a clean slate!
