Don’t Be Discouraged

Wow! That’s easier said than done, right?

I read something the other day that said, “God is never late. He doesn’t wear a watch but He’s always right on time”.

We have our set schedule, our time frame and expectations on how things should be done and how long it should take but rarely, is that the same time frame that God uses. He wants us living in the moment, in His presence, regardless of the circumstances.

We used to sing a hymn, nearly every Sunday evening. Our church let people request the songs we sang those evenings and inevitably someone would request “What A Friend We Have in Jesus”. And then they would share a testimony of God’s faithfulness and provision. I particularly like verses two and three.

“Have we trials and temptations?

Is there trouble anywhere?

We should never be discouraged—

Take it to the Lord in prayer.

Can we find a friend so faithful,

Who will all our sorrows share?

Jesus knows our every weakness;

Take it to the Lord in prayer.

Are we weak and heavy-laden,

Cumbered with a load of care?

Precious Savior, still our refuge—

Take it to the Lord in prayer.

Do thy friends despise, forsake thee?

Take it to the Lord in prayer!

In His arms He’ll take and shield thee,

Thou wilt find a solace there.” verses 2 & 3 of What a Friend We Have in Jesus by Joseph Scriven

Never be discouraged – take it to the Lord in prayer. Listen to these words that the Lord spoke in the Old Testament to Joshua and Isaiah.

“Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.” Isaiah 41:10 NLT

“Don’t ever be afraid or discouraged,” Joshua told his men. “Be strong and courageous, for the Lord is going to do this to all of your enemies.” Joshua 10:25NLT

“Be strong and courageous! Don’t be afraid or discouraged because of the king of Assyria or his mighty army, for there is a power far greater on our side!” II Chronicles 32:7 NLT

No matter the circumstances, no matter the obstacles, no matter the enemy we have God’s promise to never leave us or abandon us. Keeping our hearts set on this promise will keep us from being afraid or discouraged.

Be a Steaming Cup

Sometimes I get caught up in my reading and writing in the morning and my coffee cools down. One thing I don’t like is lukewarm coffee. The other morning, I picked up my cup and took a big sip and immediately spit it back in the cup. Yuk!

I headed to the sink and dumped it out. Refilled my cup, took another drink, ahhh, nice and hot the way it should be.

That’s what I thought of while reading these verses from Revelation.

“Write this to the angel of the church in Laodicea: “Here is a message from the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of all that God has made.

15 ‘I know what you do. You are not hot or cold. I wish that you were hot or cold! 16 But you are only warm—not hot, not cold. So I am ready to spit you out of my mouth. 17 You say you are rich. You think you have become wealthy and don’t need anything. But you don’t know that you are really miserable, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked. 18 I advise you to buy gold from me—gold made pure in fire. Then you will be rich. I tell you this: Buy clothes that are white. Then you will be able to cover your shameful nakedness. I also tell you to buy medicine to put on your eyes. Then you will be able to see.

19 “I correct and punish the people I love. So show that nothing is more important to you than living right. Change your hearts and lives. 20 Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in and eat with you. And you will eat with me.” Revelation 3:14-20

Lukewarm Christians are not what Jesus is looking for. He would rather we be cold over being lukewarm.

He prefers that we be red-hot, on fire Christians serving Him but if not, don’t do it half way. Don’t fake it – that gives Christianity a bad name. Live a life that is distinguished – live different, set apart so that people will know that your life counts for God.

It has been my unfortunate experience to hear “If that’s what a Christian is or how they act, I don’t want to be one”.

He is standing at the door waiting to fellowship with us today. He wants to be invited into our home, into your life and develop in friendship and companionship with us. So many times, this verse is used as salvation invitation, but it is written to Christians to convey the depth of relationship that God wants to have with us.

He wants to be invited into our lives in a very real way. He stands at our life’s door, waiting to be invited in. He wants to be with us daily – to eat with us, to share life’s joys and sorrows, to bring us peace.

Let’s not be lukewarm! A life with Christ is a life where the steam of His love can be seen rising from our cups.

God’s Love Never Fails

If you read yesterday’s blog you will understand my opening comments.

I got up this morning, made another pot of coffee, filling it to the 11-cup mark and I will do that again tomorrow. I enjoy the coffee each morning, I don’t get tired of making it and I am even willing to share it with others.

That’s how I feel about sharing God’s word with each of you, every morning. It was so good to read Psalm 136 this morning. There are thirty verses and thirty times one phrase is repeated, “God’s love never fails”! In another version it says “God’s love endures forever”.

Forever is a long time.

“Praise the Lord! He is good. God’s love never fails. 2 Praise the God of all gods. God’s love never fails. 3 Praise the Lord of lords. God’s love never fails. 4 Only God works great miracles. God’s love never fails.
5 With wisdom he made the sky. God’s love never fails. 6 The Lord stretched the earth
over the ocean. God’s love never fails.7 He made the bright lights in the sky. God’s love never fails. 8 He lets the sun rule each day. God’s love never fails. 9 He lets the moon and the stars rule each night. God’s love never fails.” Psalm 136:1-8 CEV

Before the earth existed, God’s love was there. Before the sky or the oceans, God’s love never failed. Before the sun, moon and stars God’s love always was!

Before you failed to acknowledge His presence, God’s love never failed. Before great accolades and fame, God’s love was there. When we were prodigal and when off to our own devices and ignored His love, God’s love never failed.

I may need to be filled daily with joy, peace, hope, faith but God’s love never fails and He is always there sharing it with me. Reminding me that:

“ God loved the people of this world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who has faith in him will have eternal life and never really die.” John 3:16 CEV

“Christ died for us at a time when we were helpless and sinful. 7 No one is really willing to die for an honest person, though someone might be willing to die for a truly good person. 8 But God showed how much he loved us by having Christ die for us, even though we were sinful. 9 But there is more! Now that God has accepted us because Christ sacrificed his life’s blood, we will also be kept safe from God’s anger.” Romans 5:6-9 CEV

Dave just refilled my coffee cup and that brought one more thought to mind about the love of God.

“You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies. You honor me by anointing my head with oil. My cup overflows with blessings. 6 Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the Lord forever.” Psalm 23:5-6 NLT

God’s goodness and unfailing love pursues me all the days of my life. My cup is running over with His love. His love never fails!
