Broken Bread

Very shortly Dave and I will be leaving for “Sonrise” Service. It’s going to be a beautiful crisp morning as we join with friends to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus.

But that first morning wasn’t a time of celebration for the apostles and Jesus’ followers. It was a time of mourning, a time to say a proper good-bye, a time of preparing His body for a proper burial.

How startling and frightening it was for Mary and the other women to arrive at the tomb and find it empty!

They ran back to the place where they were all gathered and told Peter, John and the others that Jesus was gone and the angels said He was alive. Peter and John ran to the tomb and found it empty. They went back to the others and reported that it was as the women had said. (John 20, Matthew 28)

It was in the garden where Mary saw Jesus and knew the Lord was alive, He spoke to her. He called her by name.

Next to see Jesus were two disciples walking on the road. (Luke 24) They were talking about everything that had happened in Jerusalem – the trial, the beating, and the crucifixion. Jesus joined them on the road and asked what they were talking about. They thought He was the only one in Jerusalem who didn’t know what had happened. When they got to their destination, they invited Jesus to eat with them, still they didn’t recognize Him but when Jesus took the bread and blessed it, they knew! Instantly, Jesus was gone from their midst.

“Joining them at the supper table, Jesus took some bread and gave thanks. Then he broke some off and gave it to them. 31 Just then the men were allowed to recognize him. But when they saw who he was, he disappeared. 32 They said to each other, ‘When he talked to us on the road, it felt like a fire burning in us. How exciting it was when he explained to us the true meaning of the Scriptures!’”Luke 24:20-32 ERV

The two ran back, seven miles to Jerusalem, to tell the others what had happened. They were behind locked doors because they feared the soldiers would come for them. It was the evening of that same day and Jesus appeared in their midst.

The breaking of the bread and blessing it was something they had probably seen Jesus do many times. It was familiar to them and they recognized this gesture.

“While the two men were saying these things to the other followers, Jesus himself came and stood among them. He said to them, ‘Peace be with you.’

37 This surprised the followers. They were afraid. They thought they were seeing a ghost. 38 But Jesus said, ‘Why are you troubled? Why do you doubt what you see? 39 Look at my hands and my feet. It’s really me. Touch me. You can see that I have a living body; a ghost does not have a body like this.’” Luke 24:36-39 ERV

Maybe some of you are troubled today, wondering if God has forgotten you. He hasn’t! God takes the ordinary things in life and makes them extraordinary. He gladly reveals Himself and His power to us in personal ways.

Welcome Him to your table and break bread with the risen Savior!

What Happened in Hell?

After the crucifixion the world thought that Jesus was dead and no longer a threat but they were so wrong.

Jesus went to hell and defeated satan and his demons. When He rose from the tomb He emerged as the Champion of Champions.

“God lives fully in Christ. 10 And you are fully grown because you belong to Christ, who is over every power and authority. 11 Christ has also taken away your selfish desires, just as circumcision removes flesh from the body. 12 And when you were baptized, it was the same as being buried with Christ. Then you were raised to life because you had faith in the power of God, who raised Christ from death. 13 You were dead, because you were sinful and were not God’s people. But God let Christ make you alive, when he forgave all our sins.

14 God wiped out the charges that were against us for disobeying the Law of Moses. He took them away and nailed them to the cross. 15 There Christ defeated all powers and forces. He let the whole world see them being led away as prisoners when he celebrated his victory.” Colossians 2:9-15

Here’s a brief recap of the above.

All the fullness of God lives in Christ and since we are in Christ all God’s fullness lives in us. All of His power, faith, love and righteousness are ours – we need to renew our minds to what God has done for us!

By Christ’s death and resurrection, we have been raised to new life and our old sinful nature has been circumcised – it has been cut away. All of our sins have been forgiven and we have been made alive in God – a new creature, a whole new species of being.

God the Father wiped out all the charges of sin that were against us when He nailed them to the cross and they were blotted out by Jesus’ blood! I like to think of it as this – He crashed the hard drive, and all the evidence of our sin was lost forever!!!

Jesus defeated all the forces of hell, and He led them through the streets of the spirit realm, striped of power. The picture painted here is of a Roman ruler parading a defeated monarch through the streets of his capital city, naked. He did this to prove to the monarch’s subjects that their king had been defeated completely, humiliated and unable to control what was forced upon him. This is what Jesus did to Satan when he was placed in the tomb. He marched into hell; gather up Satan and paraded him through all the streets of hell – naked – striped of the keys of death, hell and the grave – striped of all his power – to prove that Jesus is Lord!

Oh my goodness, if you’re not shouting by now – you’re in need of resuscitation!

Sing it with me – He is Lord, He is Lord, He is risen from the dead and He is Lord! Every knee shall bow, every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord!

He did this for you and me. He didn’t have to come to earth to have power over Satan, He had it from the beginning. But He came to die and in death defeat Satan for us – we were the ones under his rule. What He did in hell, He did as our substitute, and he defeated the devil and sin on our behalf so that we could have the fullness of the Father operating in our lives!

It’s A Good Friday

This morning’s thought is going to be a bit different.

I know there are some of you who read my postings and you wouldn’t call yourself a religious person or even a Christian. I want to talk to you for a minute.

Years ago, I was leading a weight loss group, and it was attended by people from many different walks, some were church people and some weren’t. At the end of each class I would close in prayer. This one particular night I had a woman say to me in front of everyone, “I’ve never heard anyone pray like you do; you talk to God just like he’s your friend.” I smiled and said, “He is.”

This is Easter weekend and amidst the baskets and bunnies, the lilies and the eggs you will find an empty cross and an empty tomb. This is the place where my friend died. He wasn’t religious either. He came to replace religious tradition with personal relationship.

John the Baptist, Jesus’ cousin, saw Jesus walking up the road and he made this comment to those around him “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.”

Jesus came all those years ago to be our sacrifice, a lamb, pure and spotless as was required by Jewish tradition for a sin offering. He came to take away our sins and not just the sins of those who have already believed on Him and received Him as Savior but the sins of the WHOLE world.

“Jesus is the way our sins are taken away. And he is the way all people can have their sins taken away too.” I John 2:2 ERV

God knows more about our sin than we do. We have probably forgotten a lot of the ones that happened a long time ago, but God made sure that they were all covered by one sacrifice.

“ Yes, God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him would not be lost but have eternal life. 17 God sent his Son into the world. He did not send him to judge the world guilty, but to save the world through him.” John 3:16-17 ERV

Believe on Him? Believe that He is the perfect payment for sin. Jesus doesn’t want us condemned. He wants us to live free of guilt, worry, desperation and fear. He wants us to know we are forgiven.

If you haven’t received God’s free gift, the forgiveness of your sins, and His promise to make you an adopted child in the family of God then I encourage you to do that today.

It doesn’t require a lot of fanfare or bells and whistles, just simply a believing heart, accepting God’s gift of mercy and grace. God loves you unconditionally – He knows all about you, He’s always there for you and He’s reaching out to you now.

Come to Him and say, “Father God, you gave your only Son to die for my sins so that I can have a life and relationship with you. I believe that Jesus died for me and I accept His sacrifice as payment for my sin. I receive Your precious gift of eternal life and I thank you for it. In Jesus Name.”

If you prayed that prayer I encourage you to tell someone about this wonderful gift you have received and I encourage you to get to know Your Father.

He desires to be your Savior and your best friend!

In Everything

I saw this picture and it immediately brought a smile to my face. But what has that got to do with our teaching this morning?

Everything. Yes, everything. God wants us to have thankful, joyful hearts.

“In everything give thanks. This is what God wants you to do because of Christ Jesus.” I Thessalonians 5:18 NLV

There’s a big difference between giving thanks IN everything and FOR everything.

We can give thanks IN every situation and circumstance because our eyes are on the Lord, and we can trust Him to be an EVER-PRESENT HELP in times of trouble.

“Don’t worry about anything, but pray about everything. With thankful hearts offer up your prayers and requests to God. 7 Then, because you belong to Christ Jesus, God will bless you with peace that no one can completely understand. And this peace will control the way you think and feel.” Philippians 4:6-7 CEV

More qualifiers for our conduct in every situation.

Don’t worry about ANYTHING!

Pray about EVERYTHING!

BELONG to Christ, be blessed with PEACE

Kind of sounds like Jesus’ own words in the boat that was storm-tossed at sea.

“But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, ‘Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?’ 39 And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, ‘Peace! Be still!’ And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40 He said to them, ‘Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?’” Mark 4:38-40 ESV

We will have storms and trials. We will face situations and circumstances beyond our control but instead of being weighted down with worry and fear we are admonished to place them in the control of the One who brings peace. We place our faith in Him!

“Give all your worries to him, because he cares for you.” I Peter 5:7 ERV

“So I tell you, don’t worry about the things you need to live—what you will eat, drink, or wear. Life is more important than food, and the body is more important than what you put on it. 26 Look at the birds. They don’t plant, harvest, or save food in barns, but your heavenly Father feeds them. Don’t you know you are worth much more than they are?” Matthew 6:25-26 ERV

At this Easter season, with our attention focused on the horrible way Jesus was treated leading up to the crucifixion, we wonder how He could experience such a horrible death. How was He able to go through it all without lashing out?

“We must never stop looking to Jesus. He is the leader of our faith, and he is the one who makes our faith complete. He suffered death on a cross. But he accepted the shame of the cross as if it were nothing because of the joy he could see waiting for him. And now he is sitting at the right side of God’s throne. 3 Think about Jesus. He patiently endured the angry insults that sinful people were shouting at him. Think about him so that you won’t get discouraged and stop trying.” Hebrews 12:2-3 ERV

Think about Jesus! Don’t worry – put a smile on your face and know that God loves you and will bring you through anything and in everything He will give you peace!

The Torn Curtain

There are so many events that happened in the days around the crucifixion of Jesus that deserve notice but one in particular came to mind this morning. It is deeply significant to me.

Let me give you the back story.

When the Lord instructed Moses to build the tabernacle, he was given a specific plan. In the interior was what is referred to as the Holy of Holies, or The Most Holy Place. The high priest was only allowed to go in there once a year and then only after offering the specific sacrifice for the atonement of sin.

The Holy of Holies was separated from the rest of the tabernacle by a tall, thick curtain.

“The stones with the Ten Commandments written on them were stored in the sacred chest, the place of mercy was put on top of it, and the carrying poles were attached. 21 The chest was brought into the tent and set behind the curtain in the most holy place. These things were done exactly as the Lord had commanded Moses.” Exodus 40:20-21 CEV

The curtain was used to separate God’s holy presence from people who were sinful and unreconciled to God.

Now, come forward to the day of the crucifixion.

“When Jesus died, the curtain in the Temple was torn into two pieces. The tear started at the top and tore all the way to the bottom. Also, the earth shook and rocks were broken.” Matthew 27:51 ERV

The high priest couldn’t enter the Most Holy Place without offering the perfect lamb as a sacrifice. But when Jesus, the perfect lamb, was offered for the forgiveness of sin the presence of Almighty God was available to everyone, not just the priests.

“The Law teaches that offerings and sacrifices must be made because of sin. But why did Christ mention these things and say that God did not want them? 9 Well, it was to do away with offerings and sacrifices and to replace them. This is what he meant by saying to God, “I have come to do what you want.” 10 So we are made holy because Christ obeyed God and offered himself once for all.” Hebrews 10:8-10 CEV

Yearly sacrifices for sin are no longer necessary. Christ made one sacrifice, and it covered all sin, once and for all!

“Even when we were God’s enemies, he made peace with us, because his Son died for us. Yet something even greater than friendship is ours. Now that we are at peace with God, we will be saved by the life of his Son.” Romans 5:10 CEV

We were like those people of the Old Testament, unworthy on our own merits to receive forgiveness but Christ…

“ When sins are forgiven, there is no more need to offer sacrifices. 19 My friends, the blood of Jesus gives us courage to enter the most holy place 20 by a new way that leads to life! And this way takes us through the curtain that is Christ himself. 21 We have a great high priest who is in charge of God’s house. 22  So let’s come near God with pure hearts and a confidence that comes from having faith. Let’s keep our hearts pure, our consciences free from evil, and our bodies washed with clean water. 23 We must hold tightly to the hope we say is ours. After all, we can trust the one who made the agreement with us.” Hebrews 10:18-23 CEV

The curtain in the Temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. No man tore the curtain, it was torn by Almighty God.

The sacrifice for sin is complete in Christ and now we can come boldly into the throne room of God. The curtain has been torn and we have access to the Father.

Stuck in a Pit

Our thoughts this morning come from Psalm 40. As I was reading it the words jumped off the page.

“I called to the Lord, and he heard me. He heard my cries. 2 He lifted me out of the grave. He lifted me from that muddy place. He picked me up, put me on solid ground, and kept my feet from slipping. 3 He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God.
Many will see what he did and worship him. They will put their trust in the Lord.” Psalm 40:1-3 ERV

He lifted me from a muddy pit and put me on solid ground!

I don’t know if you’ve ever been stuck, I mean really, really stuck. There’s almost a sense of hopelessness and despair. When will help come – will I ever be rescued?

That’s the desperation in the heart of David as he wrote this Psalm. I called and He heard me and He lifted me out and put my feet on solid ground and kept me from slipping!

We were stuck in a snowdrift once on the side of a mountain. We were in our Excursion, we had gone out to cut a Christmas tree. We started to back down a side road so we could turn around and we were stuck. Even with four-wheel drive we would make twelve inches of progress and slide back six inches. It was scary and both physically and emotionally exhausting. We were sliding closer and closer to the edge of the mountain.

When I read those words “kept my feet from slipping”, I can relate. Even now as I am relating this to you my heartbeat has increased, and my breathing has gotten deeper. And I just exhaled a big sigh of relief.

My example is of being physically stuck but there have also been times when I was emotionally stuck. Desperate and depressed. The Lord’s loving-kindness pulled me out of those times too. He reassured me that no matter what I would face in life I would never be alone. He would walk through every step with me and He would rescue me when I slipped.

“So I said, ‘Here I am, ready to do what was written about me in the book. 8 My God, I am happy to do whatever you want. I never stop thinking about your teachings.’ 9 I told the good news of victory to the people in the great assembly. And, Lord, you know that I will never stop telling that good news. 10 I told about the good things you did. I did not hide these things in my heart. I spoke of how you can be trusted to save us. I did not hide your love and loyalty from those in the great assembly. 11 Lord, do not hide your mercy from me. Let your love and loyalty always protect me. ” Psalm 40:6-11 ERV

This is the reason I share with you every morning. “I told about the good things You did”! If the Lord could reach me with His love and mercy, and He did, He can and will reach out to each one of you!

Our heavenly Father doesn’t want us stuck in a pit. He is willing to lift us up and set our feet in a place where we won’t slip! Amen.

Time to Reflect

This morning my thoughts naturally go to what God has to say about marriage. Dave & I are celebrating our 52nd anniversary today! Wow, where did the time go?

I did a teaching on marriage once. Marriage is a growing relationship, and this verse took on new meaning.

“Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.” Galatians 6:7

You see the Lord showed me if there were things I wanted to see in my husband then I should be sowing them into his life; tenderness, kindness, respect, consideration, allowance for shortcomings. You get the picture – when we give those things, it’s like planting seed and we reap what you sow.

In our time, “love, honor and obey” weren’t really popular words to have in your wedding vows but they were in ours.

“Always give thanks to God the Father for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 21 Be willing to serve each other out of respect for Christ.

22 Wives, be willing to serve your husbands the same as the Lord. 23 A husband is the head of his wife, just as Christ is the head of the church. Christ is the Savior of the church, which is his body. 24 The church serves under Christ, so it is the same with you wives. You should be willing to serve your husbands in everything.

25 Husbands, love your wives the same as Christ loved the church and gave his life for it. 26 He died to make the church holy. He used the telling of the Good News to make the church clean by washing it with water. 27 Christ died so that he could give the church to himself like a bride in all her beauty. He died so that the church could be holy and without fault, with no evil or sin or any other thing wrong in it.

28 And husbands should love their wives like that. They should love their wives as they love their own bodies. The man who loves his wife loves himself, 29 because no one ever hates his own body, but feeds and takes care of it. And that is what Christ does for the church 30 because we are parts of his body.” Ephesians 5:20-30 ERV

In those times when we don’t live out the verses above, we repent when we fail.

“This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church. 33Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.” Ephesians 5:32-33 ERV

A godly marriage is an example of how Christ loves us and gave Himself for us. He protects, provides and nurtures us. He longs for us to meet our full potential and be secure in His love.

Thank you to my husband for being an example of Christ’s love to me and for continuing to grow with me in our marriage and our love.

In Complete Control

Today is Palm Sunday. Jesus is making His entrance into Jerusalem and there is so much going on behind the scenes, but Jesus is in complete control.

“He said to them, “Go to the town you can see there. When you enter it, you will find a donkey with her colt. Untie them both, and bring them to me. 3 If anyone asks you why you are taking the donkeys, tell them, ‘The Master needs them. He will send them back soon.’” Matthew 21:2-3 ERV

In Jesus’ latest teachings He had angered the religious leaders. They were plotting to have him killed. In fact, at one point they had picked up stones to stone Him and He simply walked away from the crowd in the confusion.

He had told His disciples that he was going to be beaten, tried and crucified. Remember that from my blog a few days back. And now they were headed back to Jerusalem for the celebration of Passover and as he knew, to His death.

“The followers went and did what Jesus told them to do. 7 They brought the mother donkey and the young donkey to him. They covered the donkeys with their coats, and Jesus sat on them. 8 On the way to Jerusalem, many people spread their coats on the road for Jesus. Others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 Some of the people were walking ahead of Jesus. Others were walking behind him. They all shouted,

“Praise to the Son of David!  ‘Welcome! God bless the one who comes in the name of the Lord!’ Matthew 21:6-9 ERV

If you’ve been around horses or donkeys at all you know this could be a recipe for disaster. Being horse-back in the middle of a crowd, shouting, throwing branches on the ground in front of you, could spook even the gentlest of horses. And for it to be a mare with a young colt by herself, this was sure to unnerve horse and rider.

But Jesus…yes, He was the one who calm the sea and the wind with His words. He was the one who always preached “Don’t be troubled, don’t be afraid, peace be still”.

So, in this situation, He stayed in control and at peace. This ride into Jerusalem had been predicted hundreds of years ago.

“People of Zion, rejoice! People of Jerusalem, shout with joy! Look, your king is coming to you! He is the good king who won the victory, but he is humble. He is riding on a donkey, on a young donkey born from a work animal.” Zechariah 9:9 ERV

Jesus knew every prophecy needed to be fulfilled. This was part of the plan and He was in control.

It may seem like a small detail to you and I, but what it tells me is that whatever God has planned for me I can be at peace, knowing that He is in control and will work out everything for my good.

“ Trust the Lord completely, and don’t depend on your own knowledge. 6 With every step you take, think about what he wants, and he will help you go the right way.” Proverbs 3:5-6 ERV

When we let the Father direct and control our lives He will be peace in the midst of chaos.

Filled with Peace

I was sitting here this morning telling heavenly Father, Jesus and Holy Spirit how much I love them and I was flooded with peace!

I felt like such a little girl being lifted up in my father’s arms and brought to rest on his big broad lap. I was so overtaken by His greatness and compared to my minute abilities. Again, I was overwhelmed with peace by the presence of Almighty God, my Lord and Savior and the Spirit of the Lord.

Many times I am overwhelmed with the thoughts of God’s amazing love and peace.

Things in our daily lives can be chaotic and unsettling but when we focus in on who God is and how much He loves us, it’s like being wrapped in a warm blanket in a comfy chair.

Comfort! Peace! Security!

“I pray that the God who gives hope will fill you with much joy and peace as you trust in him. Then you will have more and more hope, and it will flow out of you by the power of the Holy Spirit.” Romans 15:13 ERV

Our Father wants us to be at peace, to trust Him, to know that He will handle whatever we bring to Him.

“Don’t worry about anything, but pray about everything. With thankful hearts offer up your prayers and requests to God. 7 Then, because you belong to Christ Jesus, God will bless you with peace that no one can completely understand. And this peace will control the way you think and feel.

8 Finally, my friends, keep your minds on whatever is true, pure, right, holy, friendly, and proper. Don’t ever stop thinking about what is truly worthwhile and worthy of praise. 9 You know the teachings I gave you, and you know what you heard me say and saw me do. So follow my example. And God, who gives peace, will be with you.” Philippians 4:6-9 CEV

His Name is Jesus

Who occupies my waking thoughts? His name is Jesus!

This morning I’ve been sitting here trying to remember the lyrics for the melody that is running through my head, and I am at a loss. I have done every possible goggle search of combinations of words and still haven’t found the lyrics.

However – that has not stopped me from worshipping the precious name of Jesus. Magnify the matchless name of Jesus!

“Grace and peace to you from the one who is, who always was, and who is coming; and from the seven spirits before his throne; 5 and from Jesus Christ. Jesus is the faithful witness. He is first among all who will be raised from death. He is the ruler of the kings of the earth. Jesus is the one who loves us and has made us free from our sins with his blood sacrifice. 6 He made us his kingdom and priests who serve God his Father. To Jesus be glory and power forever and ever! Amen.” Revelation 1:4-6 ERV

King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Praise the matchless name of Jesus. Forever He shall reign; His name is Jesus! Magnify the precious name of Jesus!

“ She will give birth to a son. You will name him Jesus. Give him that name because he will save his people from their sins.” Matthew 1:21 ERV

“On his robe and on his leg was written this name: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS” Revelation 19:16 ERV

Heaven and earth honor and stand silent at the name of Jesus.

“So God raised him up to the most important place and gave him the name that is greater than any other name. 10 God did this so that every person will bow down to honor the name of Jesus. Everyone in heaven, on earth, and under the earth will bow.” Philippians 2:9-10 ERV

This wonderful King, this wonderful Savior and Lord, His name is Jesus!

“ People insulted him, but he did not insult them back. He suffered, but he did not threaten anyone. No, he let God take care of him. God is the one who judges rightly. 24 Christ carried our sins in his body on the cross. He did this so that we would stop living for sin and live for what is right. By his wounds you were healed. 25 You were like sheep that went the wrong way. But now you have come back to the Shepherd and Protector of your lives.” I Peter 2:23-25 ERV

I will forever praise the name of Jesus!
