Start the Day with Love

What’s the first thing you see when you wake up in the morning?

I look for my robe and slippers. Then I take Glory out of our room, close the door so we don’t wake Dave and head to the back door to let her out. I bring her back in, feed her, get my coffee (the auto start feature is wonderful), grab my Bible, my computer and I sit down for my quiet time. However, the first thing I see is the clock. If it’s too early I try to roll over and go back to sleep for a while. That’s the way every morning has started for the last eleven years.

But, the first thing I do each morning is take time before I get out of bed to say my I love you’s. “I love you Father, I love you Jesus, I love you Holy Spirit. Good morning.” I start each day with love.

As I was reading in the Psalms I found a comment by King David at the end of Psalm 17.

“When I awake, all I want is to see you as you are.” Psalm 17:15 CEV

To see you as you are! Psalm 17 is another one of David’s psalms of praise – thanking the Lord for being his strength, his defender, his protector, his creator. How much better would our day go if we just focused physically and spiritually on seeing God as He is?

“I pray to you, God, because you will help me. Listen and answer my prayer! 7 Show your wonderful love. Your mighty arm protects those who run to you for safety from their enemies. 8 Protect me as you would your very own eyes; hide me in the shadow of your wings… 14 You provide food for those you love. Their children have plenty, and their grandchildren will have more than enough. 15 I am innocent, Lord, and I will see your face! When I awake, all I want is to see you as you are.” Psalm 17:6-8, 14-15 CEV

Today there may be many things fighting for our attention but when we focus, when we set our heart and mind to see God, we can start our day with our loving heavenly Father and see Him as who He is!

Keep Looking

Only another week until Valentine’s Day. I’m so glad that I don’t need a single date on the calendar to tell me that I should express my love to others. What makes a difference is the little things, the day-to-day expressions; the determination to never give up.

“Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.” I Corinthians 13:7 NLT

Jesus told a beautiful story of enduring love to his disciples.

“Then Jesus told them this story: 4 “Suppose one of you has 100 sheep, but one of them gets lost. What will you do? You will leave the other 99 sheep there in the field and go out and look for the lost sheep. You will continue to search for it until you find it. 5 And when you find it, you will be very happy. You will carry it 6 home, go to your friends and neighbors and say to them, ‘Be happy with me because I found my lost sheep!’ 7 In the same way, I tell you, heaven is a happy place when one sinner decides to change. There is more joy for that one sinner than for 99 good people who don’t need to change.” Luke 15:3-7 ERV

This is not a story about proper animal husbandry. It’s a story of love. King David often drew a correlation between the Lord’s love for us and a good shepherd caring for his sheep. In fact, one of the most quoted Bible references is Psalm 23. “The Lord is my shepherd”.

Jesus referred to himself as the good shepherd who cares for his sheep. He said that there is a thief out there who wants nothing more than to steal, kill and destroy us. He, as the good shepherd, came to give us life to the full. That’s why, when we’ve lost our way, He goes looking for us. Love never gives up, love never fails. He keeps looking until He finds us and then carries home and has a party.

Imagine that! We are God’s reason to party.

I want to be like that with the lost sheep in my life. I will keep looking for ways to find and heal those situations. Prayer, kind words, an attitude of never giving up will go a long way in the recovery process. Ultimately it is the Shepherd who brings back what was lost and then it will be time for a party.

Love never gives up, never loses hope. Keep looking!

Yesterday’s News

Yesterday I watched as something very strange transpired. The stock market fell and all the financial analysts were saying it was because of the coronavirus reports.

Fear was rearing it’s ugly head!

For years I have read and taught about the protection the Lord promises us from His Word, particularly Psalm 91. However, there was a part of that chapter I didn’t fully understand until a few years ago.

“You will not be afraid of trouble at night, or of the arrow that flies by day. 6 You will not be afraid of the sickness that walks in darkness, or of the trouble that destroys at noon. 7 A thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand. But it will not come near you.” Psalm 91:5-7 NLV

In my lifetime we have been warned of the swine flu, the bird flu, SARS, Legionaire’s disease and now the coronavirus. I’m not saying that these diseases are not real threats but I am saying that God’s word gives many promises of protection to those of us who trust Him. He will keep us safe.

“Because you have made the Lord your safe place, and the Most High the place where you live, 10 nothing will hurt you. No trouble will come near your tent.” Psalm 91:10 NLV

The Lord doesn’t want us living in fear. I know I’ve told you before but it bares repeating now. There are over 300 verses in the Bible that counsel us not to fear, to worry or be anxious. Those things, left unchecked, will rob us of our faith in God. Faith is trusting the Father to handle all the circumstances of our lives; fear displaces that trust and tries to convince us that He won’t.

“I will give honor and thanks to the Lord, Who has told me what to do. Yes, even at night my mind teaches me. 8 I have placed the Lord always in front of me. Because He is at my right hand, I will not be moved. 9 And so my heart is glad. My soul is full of joy. My body also will rest without fear.” Psalm 16:7-9 NLV

The First Report Isn’t Final

Yesterday I had the opportunity to share with a friend something I had heard a Bible teacher friend say years and years ago. The depth of this statement is sometimes lost in its simplicity.

“The first report is not the last report.”

We need to guard our hearts when we receive a first report of bad news. The report may contain devastating information but our loving Father is in the news re-creation business. Society may say that our actions are unforgiveable but God says forgiven, washed cleaned.

A few days ago I gave you the highlights of Joseph’s life. The first report his brothers gave their father was “Joseph is dead”. But, the last report came thirteen years later when those same brothers went to the father and said we need to go to Egypt, Joseph is alive.

The banker may say “bankrupt” but God’s word says He will supply all our needs. The doctor may say “terminal” but God says I will forgive all your sins and heal all your diseases. Business critics may say “you’ve failed, you’ll never recover” but the Lord promises that we can do all things through Christ who is our strength.

“They will not be afraid of bad news. They are confident because they trust in the Lord. 8 They remain confident and without fear, so they defeat their enemies.” Psalm 112:7-8 ERV

The first report is not the last report. Don’t be afraid of bad news, instead be confident and trust the Lord.

There was a dark and terrible day. A man, who had only done good, was convicted of a horrible crime and sentenced to die. His mother stood silent as she watched His execution. The first report was “he’s dead – put him in a tomb”. However, three days later there was another report, the final report, which was “go tell my disciples that I have risen from the dead”. Jesus is the essence of a good, final report!

The first report of our life may contain news of our failures and shortcomings, our weaknesses and defeat. But the last report, the final report, is still being written and it will read

“We thank God for the power Christ has given us. He leads us and makes us win in everything.” II Corinthians 2:14a NLT

Loyal & Faithful

Recently I saw a post by a woman who talked about the faithfulness and loyalty of her canine friend. Those of us who have dogs know the wonderful love, devotion, companionship and concern that we receive from them. The saying goes “dog is man’s best friend”.

I don’t know that I would take it quite that far but I do know that my Glory is such an amazing example of faithfulness and love. When I see how she is always there, wanting to be close, concerned when I am away and constantly by my side when she knows I am upset or unwell, I have a small glimpse into the faithfulness of God.

People let us down. But we will never experience that from the Lord.

“We are still alive because the Lord’s faithful love never ends. 23 Every morning he shows it in new ways! You are so very true and loyal (faithful)! 24 I say to myself, “The Lord is my God, and I trust him.” Lamentations 3:22-24 ERV

Every morning He is always here! Even when we are unfaithful to Him, he remains faithful. Before we put our feet on the floor He is waiting to spend time with us. Before we have our first cup of coffee the Lord is here waiting to start our day with us. He is faithful!

“Lord, your word continues forever in heaven. 90 You are loyal (faithful) forever and ever. You made the earth, and it still stands.” Psalm 119:89-90 ERV

The word faithful or faithfulness is translated in these verses as loyal. But it’s more than that. A dog can be loyal but when God is faithful it means He is “faith – filled”. He is faithful to all generations.

His faithfulness is who He is and what He does. He created the earth and said light be. Today, He is still faith-filled and so the light continues to shine. God, the Father, IS love and as such He says He endures all things and thinks the best of us at all times. He is faith-filled and His love never fails.

“Love does not remember wrongs done against it. 6 Love is never happy when others do wrong, but it is always happy with the truth. 7 Love never gives up on people. It never stops trusting, never loses hope, and never quits.” I Corinthians 13:5-7 ERV

He is faithful to forgive, which means He chooses to forget our sins and our failures. He only sees the best in us!

Let’s live like the Father, be a “faith filled” person. Look at others through eyes of faith and see them the way the Father sees them with their sins covered by the blood of Jesus.

He is faithful!

Nothing Is Impossible!

If you’ve been reading this blog for any length of time I hope you have seen one reoccurring theme – God is good and He loves doing good!

It is so easy to become weighed down with the circumstances of life. When we try to do things on our own we will come up short. We may accomplish success and achieve victories but when it’s done in our own power and strength we will also find ourselves stressed, exhausted and sacrificing those things that are most important.

“O Sovereign Lord! You made the heavens and earth by your strong hand and powerful arm. Nothing is too hard for you! 18 You show unfailing love to thousands,” Jeremiah 32:17-18a NLT

“Now that I am old and my hair is gray, don’t leave me, God. I must tell the next generation about your power and greatness. 19 God, your goodness reaches far above the skies. You have done wonderful things. God, there is no one like you.” Psalm 71:18-19 ERV

My hair is gray so I guess that qualifies me to speak of God’s goodness and power!

It is the Father’s desire to show His strength on our behalf. He isn’t looking for us to fail; He’s not seeking revenge or retribution for the things we’ve done wrong. It is His desire to show us His unconditional love.

“For by His loving-favor you have been saved from the punishment of sin through faith. It is not by anything you have done. It is a gift of God. 9 It is not given to you because you worked for it. If you could work for it, you would be proud. 10 We are His work. He has made us to belong to Christ Jesus so we can work for Him. He planned that we should do this.” Ephesians 2:8-10 ERV

What challenges face you today? Give them over to the One who loves you and whose goodness reaches above the skies. With Him, with our loving heavenly Father, nothing is impossible!

Lessons in Your Closet

It’s so strange what’s on my mind this morning. I’m thinking about my closet and in particular the hangers. Now before you assume I am going to talk to you about cleaning out your closet, let me put your mind at ease. I’m not.

Our closet has two kinds of hangers. Dark and light. The light ones are for my clothes and the darker ones are for Dave’s. When I take shirts and pants out of the dryer the hangers are there in the laundry room and it makes it simple to grab the right ones. I know that everything will have a hanger when I do it that way. I guess there’s a bit of OCD there, however, that’s not what I wanted to talk about.

I wanted to talk about the way the hangers are placed on the rod. They should all be going the same direction. The hook should go over the top of the rod, facing to the back of the closet. If they don’t, they get all tangled and the clothes get jammed in and wrinkled. It’s very frustrating, to me anyway. And if I see backward hangers I have to turn them correctly before I close the closet door.

Those hangers are like our thoughts. Sometimes, our thoughts get backwards and it throws our perspective off. It takes the order out of our thinking and creates confusion. Just one or two misplaced thoughts can ruin an entire day.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. 6 Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. 7 Don’t be impressed with your own wisdom. Instead, fear the Lord and turn away from evil. 8 Then you will have healing for your body and strength for your bones.” Proverbs 3:5-8 NLT

When we commit our plans, our thoughts, to the Lord He will lead us and our path will be right, even if we fall He will lift us up and provide us with strength.

“The Lord directs the steps of the godly.  He delights in every detail of their lives. 24 Though they stumble, they will never fall, for the Lord holds them by the hand. 25 Once I was young, and now I am old. Yet I have never seen the godly abandoned or their children begging for bread.” Psalm 37:23-25 NLT

Let’s take time to examine our thoughts today. Is there something out of order? God will show us how to correct our thinking; get everything going the right way – His way! That’s the best.

My Favorite Place To Be

Where is your favorite place to be?

Dave and I spent quite a bit of time watching YouTube videos of people who RV full time. It gives us a great perspective on different areas of the country and helps us with our “wish list” of places we would like to travel. We were telling our neighbors about the place I refer to as my favorite place, Virgin River Recreation Area. It’s located on the border of Utah, Nevada and Arizona. It’s gorgeous! The rock formations are absolutely beautiful. After talking about it for several months, they booked a trip for the end of the month. Dave and I plan to go in March sometime.

However, when I really began to consider my favorite place or places this wasn’t it.

“You will teach me the right way to live. Just being with you will bring complete happiness. Being at your right side will make me happy forever.” Psalm 16:11 ERV

My favorite places to be are in contentment, relaxation, peace, safety – in the presence of the Lord! The list of places I desire to travel will lose their appeal and the experience of being there will be lacking if I’m not focused on His presence.

“The one thing I ask of the Lord— the thing I seek most— is to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, delighting in the Lord’s perfections and meditating in his Temple. 5 For he will conceal me there when troubles come; he will hide me in his sanctuary. He will place me out of reach on a high rock.” Psalm 27:4-5 NLT

Each day can be the most wonderful vacation spot when we focus on the Lord’s presence. King David said that life can be like a green pasture and a quiet stream when we let the Lord lead us.

Where will you go today? Make it a place where you recognize God’s presence and then you will be filled with joy!

Fear Not!

Here we are only a few days into this new year and I am sure that some of you have had to face circumstances or situations that are less than favorable. Some may have even received bad news that left you reeling. This isn’t God’s design or plan for you. His word is very plain – fear not!

“Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me” Psalm 23:4 NLT

Like a good shepherd, Jesus walks with us through the darkest times and He brings protection and comfort where our enemies would like to infuse fear and unrest.

“Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.” Isaiah 41:10 NLT

God, our Father, is loving and gracious. Any situation that we face doesn’t surprise Him; He has seen it coming and He has the answer. We need to press in to Him and let Him show us what it is.

“You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you,  all whose thoughts are fixed on you!” Isaiah 26:3 NLT

To have our thoughts fixed on the Lord is to be focused on Him. It’s like looking through the lens of a camera, everything on the peripheral blurs while we concentrate solely on what’s right before us. Look at every detail of the Father’s character, see His wisdom, His love and compassion. See His words of promise and stay in a place of peace.

Our emotions and imaginations can lead us down the path of “what if’s” if we allow them too. That’s why it’s so important to keep our minds filled with God’s word. When God makes a promise He keeps it.

“God is not a man, so he does not lie. He is not human, so he does not change his mind.
Has he ever spoken and failed to act? Has he ever promised and not carried it through?” Numbers 23:19 NLT

Give any worry or fear over to the Lord. Let Him carry the load and fear not!

“Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.” I Peter 5:7 NLT

Heart & Purpose

Christmas night we sat around wondering what to do. We were ready to relax and not in the mood for playing games. My future grandson suggested we watch a movie; not your traditional Christmas time movie but a new movie that Disney had recently released, Togo. Willem Dafoe is cast in the starring role and his co-star is a beautiful and intelligent sled dog.

Disney tells the story of Togo, a sled dog, who was all heart. He ran with purpose. From the time he was a pup all he wanted to do was run. No matter how many obstacles were placed before him he found a way to run. (Now I won’t divulge the whole story but I will tell you, you won’t be disappointed if you take the time to watch it.)

This dog instinctively had one purpose – to run and he did it with all his heart.

Last night as I was sitting on the couch those two words, heart and purpose, settled in my thinking. I was reminded of three Scripture verses.

“I ask only one thing, Lord: Let me live in your house every day of my life to see how wonderful you are and to pray in your temple. 5 In times of trouble, you will protect me. You will hide me in your tent and keep me safe on top of a mighty rock.” Psalm 27:4-5 CEV

“The Lord answered, “Martha, Martha! You are worried and upset about so many things, 42 but only one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen what is best, and it will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:41-42 CEV

“I don’t mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection. But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me. 13 No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.” Philippians 3:12-14 NLT

King David, Mary, the sister of Lazarus, and the Apostle Paul all had their hearts set on “one thing”. They had purpose.

As we come to the start of a new year I am more determined than ever to live my life focused on God’s purpose. I want to life and love with my whole heart the way the Lord wants me to. I want my life to be free from criticism, bitterness, judgement of others – these will distract me from my purpose and cause me to get off course.

I choose to live guided by God’s word and empowered by the Holy Spirit. Then, and only then, will I follow the example of Christ and imitate the character of God, the Father. I say with the Apostle Paul I haven’t attained it yet but I forget my past failures and look ahead and press on.
