Bad Haircut

Strength – feeling a bit like Samson after a bad haircut this morning? 

Yesterday Dave and I came up to Mesa and we helped Kim and Austin unpack boxes and do little chores in their new home. We sometimes forget that we are not as young as we used to be and that we aren’t nearly as able to handle the heat as we once were.

So whether you are feeling physically weak and sore this morning or emotionally drained or depleted I hope you will find strength from these words. 

“I know how to live when I am poor and when I have plenty. I have learned the secret of how to live through any kind of situation—when I have enough to eat or when I am hungry, when I have everything I need or when I have nothing. 13 Christ is the one who gives me the strength I need to do whatever I must do.” Philippians 4:12-13ERV

 This verse I learned years ago comes back to me time and time again.  I CAN do all things through Christ who strengthens me. 

 With age comes wisdom – youth says let’s hurry up and get it done; age says pace yourself.

 Today as we head out for Idaho, David will do the driving and  I will remind myself how much the Father loves me, how He has always been there for me, how He will continue to show me His goodness and give me his strength. Even as I am writing this I’m beginning to smile.

“Do not sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” Nehemiah 8:10b NKJV

We’ve driven this road to Idaho many times and the Father has kept us safe on each one. We love traveling and seeing the beauty the Lord has created for all to enjoy. Our pace will be slower, a little bit and we are confident in the Father’s protection.  

“I would have lost heart, unless I had believed  That I would see the goodness of the Lord In the land of the living. 14 Wait on the Lord; Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the Lord!” Psalm 27:13-14 NKJV 

I don’t want to make this all about me this morning. I want to encourage you – whether it’s physical, emotional, or spiritual strength you need today – you can do ALL things through Christ. He even provides for us in financial ways.

 We will all say together – the JOY of the Lord is my Strength!

Pure and Simple

Pure. What is pure? It’s simple.

When that word came to me this morning my first thought was Ivory soap. Remember the old commercial when they showed a bar of Ivory soap floating – 99 44/100% pure.

Pure as the new fallen snow, pure love, pure conscience, pure wool, pure heart, pure country.

The Scripture refers to pure gold – everything in the Tabernacle was to be made from pure gold. Pure gold is translucent – you can see through it – it has the highest value and quality.

Pure…
“The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.

8 The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes.

9 The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.

10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.” Psalm 19:7-10 KJV

The commandment of the Lord is pure and it is to be desired more than gold. The Word of the Lord is pure; no defect, no fault, no blemish, no imperfection.

Pure. God’s Word reveals to us His grace and His amazing love. It is by grace, His grace, His unmerited provision that we are saved. Saved by placing our faith in His grace! There’s nothing we can do on our own to earn it, it’s a gift we receive!

His grace took our sin and placed it on Jesus and then exchanged it for a robe of righteousness; we were made the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus.

We received right standing – right relationship – with the Father through grace! Oh yes, our righteousness is as filthy rags but we aren’t standing before the Father in our own righteousness. We stand before Him in the righteousness of Christ – that’s the message of grace that brought us salvation.

That’s the pure truth of God’s word.

We must lose sight of our own  efforts to be good enough for God and focus on His grace and righteousness. We are now a new creature when we are in Christ, old things have died (passed away) and all has become new!

We are instructed by the Apostle Paul to think on, meditate on, things that are pure, lovely, true and a good report.

“Then, because you belong to Christ Jesus, God will bless you with peace that no one can completely understand. And this peace will control the way you think and feel.

8 Finally, my friends, keep your minds on whatever is true, pure, right, holy, friendly, and proper. Don’t ever stop thinking about what is truly worthwhile and worthy of praise. 9 You know the teachings I gave you, and you know what you heard me say and saw me do. So follow my example. And God, who gives peace, will be with you.” Philippians 4:7-9 CEV

When situations arise, and they will, choose to think as we are instructed here. It may be thoughts of self-condemnation, remember what God has done to make you righteous. And if they are thoughts of criticism and ridicule of others replace them with the thought that God’s love is pure toward each and everyone of us.

Thinking like this will keep us at peace, pure and simple.

A Refreshing Glass of Cold Water

Here in the desert it is hot! I mean really hot, 116 degrees hot!!

Nothing cuts your thirst on one of these extremely hot days like a cold glass of water. Nothing!

So when the Bible talks to us about being rewarded for giving a cup of water to someone I know how valuable a gesture like that can be!

Today I want to talk to you about little kindnesses like these. In the Bible we see time and again where the Scriptures say “He was moved with compassion” or “His loving kindness”.

Loving-kindness in action is when the waitress brings us the wrong meal and we don’t go off on her but instead we are kind in our words and sincere in our appreciation for her hard work.

It’s when we show patience at the grocery store with the cashier when she has just been cussed out by the client before. Or when our child hasn’t cleaned up the yard or taken out the trash like we’ve told them and we find out  they were wounded by a friend or embarrassed by a teacher and they were just too distracted to get it done.

All of these are practical examples of loving kindness. Recently I had two people tell me how much what I had done for them meant to them. Truthfully, I really didn’t feel I had done anything special – nothing big, nothing grand. I had just come along side when they were feeling overwhelmed and helped out. No biggee…but it was to them.

Jesus says giving cups of  water is something that will be rewarded!

“Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me. And anyone who welcomes me also welcomes the one who sent me. 41 Anyone who welcomes a prophet, just because that person is a prophet, will be given the same reward as a prophet. Anyone who welcomes a good person, just because that person is good, will be given the same reward as a good person. 42 And anyone who gives one of my most humble followers a cup of cool water, just because that person is my follower, will surely be rewarded.” Matthew 10:40-42 CEV

Now I know some will look at these verses and focus on the reward but I really think what Jesus is trying to get us to see is that nothing, no matter how small, goes unnoticed to the Father when we are reaching out in love. Extending loving-kindness to those around us is an example of the Christ that lives in us.

A few years back I spent about a week in the hospital. When I came home I wasn’t able to do much for another week or so. Some sweet ladies brought me cups of cool water. One neighbor came over each morning to take our dog for a walk and she did my ironing. Another neighbor cooked enough extra each night for Dave to enjoy a nice dinner; she did my laundry and grocery shopping. These acts of love were priceless!

“Are you strong because you belong to Christ? Does His love comfort you? Do you have joy by being as one in sharing the Holy Spirit? Do you have loving-kindness and pity for each other? 2 Then give me true joy by thinking the same thoughts. Keep having the same love. Be as one in thoughts and actions. 3 Nothing should be done because of pride or thinking about yourself. Think of other people as more important than yourself. ” Philippians 2:1-3 NLV

I’m asking the Father to make me more aware of those that need a cup of cold water today. I want the world to see my Father through me!

Big Promises – Bigger God

As we look at the promises of God, I was reminded this morning of Solomon and his dedication of the Temple. King David, Solomon’s father, had gathered the treasury necessary for building the Temple but the Lord gave the task of construction to Solomon.

When the Temple was finished and the people were gathered for the dedication, Solomon prayed a prayer of thanksgiving honoring the Lord for His faithfulness and for His promise to “dwell” with His people. Then Solomon prayed over the people of Israel. Look at what he says.

“When Solomon prayed this prayer to the LORD, he was on his knees in front of the LORD’s altar and his arms were raised toward heaven. When he finished praying, he stood up. 55 Then, in a loud voice, he asked God to bless all the people of Israel. Solomon said,
56 “Praise the LORD! He promised to give rest to his people, Israel. And he has given us rest! He used his servant Moses and made many good promises to the people of Israel. And he has kept every one of them! 57 I pray that the LORD our God will be with us, as he was with our ancestors. I pray that he will never leave us. 58 I pray that we will turn to him and follow him. Then we will obey all the laws, decisions, and commands that he gave our ancestors. 59 I pray that the LORD our God will always remember this prayer and what I have asked. I pray that he will do these things for his servant, the king, and for his people, Israel. I pray that he will do this every day. 60 If he will do these things, all the people of the world will know that the LORD is the only true God. 61 You people must be loyal and true to the LORD our God. You must always follow and obey all of his laws and commands. You must continue to obey in the future as you do now.” I Kings 8: 54-61 CEV

Solomon reminded  the people. “He used his servant Moses and made many good promises to the people of Israel. And he has kept every one of them!” God keeps His word. He kept it to Moses, Joshua, David, Solomon and the Israelites and He keeps His word to us today.

Here is the key. God isn’t faithful to His word  so we can walk around bragging about things with an  arrogant attitude. God keeps His word for one reason.

“If he will do these things, all the people of the world will know that the LORD is the only true God.”

God gives and keeps His word so that all the world will know that the Lord is the only true God! So much in this world changes – we’ve heard the saying “everything is relative”. That may apply to man’s plans and programs but not to God.

I’ve never wondered if I ask the Lord for things that are too big. He is fully capable of handling any problem or situation I face. I have wondered, though, if I ask Him for too much. It’s then I remember this verse:

“Always be glad because of the Lord! I will say it again: Be glad. 5 Always be gentle with others. The Lord will soon be here. 6 Don’t worry about anything, but pray about everything. With thankful hearts offer up your prayers and requests to God. 7 Then, because you belong to Christ Jesus, God will bless you with peace that no one can completely understand. And this peace will control the way you think and feel.” Philippians 4:4-7 CEV

Do you see the words all, always, anything, everything in these verses? Our Father wants us to bring Him all of our concerns, all the time. He wants us to have complete confidence that He is able to handle anything, at any time.

He promises to give us peace, a peace that is beyond what we can rationalize. He wants us to let His peace control all we do. If we aren’t at peace, it’s a good sign that we aren’t totally trusting God in the situation.

The word of the Lord stands forever. It’s as true now as when it was written.  In our Father, there is no variableness or shadow of turning. He is consistent. Jesus Christ is the same as He was yesterday. He will not change today or in the future. God’s love, truth, mercy, peace and his grace will endure for all time.

Thank you Father! Heaven and earth may pass away but Your word, your promises, will remain forever!

How Much is ALL

Not all of our time in West Glacier was spent working. We did take one day and travel through Glacier National Park. We went on Going to the Sun Road, saw St. Maries Lake and Many Glacier. We stopped at Many Glacier for lunch. The view from the deck of the Lodge was amazing. It was impossible to take in all the beauty.

I kept thinking God made ALL of this. He made if for our enjoyment. All of His creation tells of His glory.

ALL – is an absolute – not some, not part – not by special selection but ALL. The Bible has much to say about all. God loves ALL of us.

“God makes people right through their faith in Jesus Christ. He does this for all who believe in Christ. Everyone is the same. 23 All have sinned and are not good enough to share God’s divine greatness. 24 They are made right with God by his grace. This is a free gift. They are made right with God by being made free from sin through Jesus Christ.” Romans 3:22-24ERV

The righteousness of God, right standing with God, is for ALL and to ALL who will believe because there is no one who has his own righteousness. We have ALL sinned. Our salvation is not predicated on how good we are, our social standing, our financial statement, our academic degrees, political party or our natural citizenship. It is ONLY based on what Jesus did to bring salvation to ALL. Our part is to receive the gift.

More ALL verses to contemplate today.
” Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. 9 For in him (Christ) dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. 10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:” Colossians 2:8-10

All God’s fullness of power and deity are in Christ and when we are in Christ we are complete in Him. He invests His fullness in to our lives as well. That’s just too good to be true you might say. Read this:

” and that Christ will live in your hearts because of your faith. Stand firm and be deeply rooted in his love. 18 I pray that you and all of God’s people will understand what is called wide or long or high or deep.[19 I want you to know all about Christ’s love, although it is too wonderful to be measured. Then your lives will be filled with all that God is.” Ephesians 3:17-19 CEV

When we understand the love of God by experience, His true unconditional love, we will be filled with ALL God’s fulness! Amazing!! Amazing grace in giving us freely this gift. The Gospel message really is the nearly too good to be true news!! The Apostle Paul prayed that we would know this fullness of God’s love.

He also gave us a few other absolute “ALL” verses.
” I can do all things because Christ gives me the strength.” Philippians 4:13

” I pray that God will take care of all your needs with the wonderful blessings that come from Christ Jesus! ” Philippians 4:19

If you haven’t accepted God’s free gift of grace that brings salvation, all you have to do is accept it with a sincere heart because it’s available to ALL.

” The Lord is not slow about keeping His promise as some people think. He is waiting for you. The Lord does not want any person to be punished forever. He wants all people to be sorry for their sins and turn from them.” II Peter 3:9

Everything

There are some absolutes in the Word of God that aren’t preceded by “the” but instead they use the phrase “in everything” or “always”.


“In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” I Thessalonians 5:18

Notice the verse doesn’t say “for everything” give thanks but “In everything” give thanks. It is always God’s will that we give thanks because there is power in praise and thanksgiving to God.

I know you’ve all heard it before but giving thanks in a bad situation is focusing on God’s deliverance and not on the circumstances.
Tell your problem how big your God is instead of telling God how big your problem is. There are no big problems to God, He can handle them all.

Daniel gave thanks in the lions den and then he laid down and went to sleep.  He was thankful that he was worthy of being persecuted for his stand for God.

Paul and Silas gave thanks by singing at midnight after they had been beaten and thrown in the prison. They praised God for who He is and that they had the privilege to proclaim the gospel.  Paul wrote these words.

“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.” Philippians 4:6  KJV

This is the way that verse reads in another translation.

“Don’t worry about anything, but pray and ask God for everything you need, always giving thanks for what you have.” Philippians 4:6 ERV

To be careful means to be “full of care” or worry. Worry brings anxiety.  Jesus told the disciples that the “cares of this world” would choke out the Word of God that has been planted in their hearts.

Today I encourage you to apply an “in everything” attitude to your life. Thankful for the good, the blessings that the Lord gives and thankful that He has made you victorious over the evil.

“ We thank God for the power Christ has given us. He leads us and makes us win in everything. He speaks through us wherever we go. The Good News is like a sweet smell to those who hear it.” II Corinthians 2:14 NLV

ALWAYS BE THANKFUL!

God Provides

We have a friend who is a wonderful silversmith. Several years ago he made me a ring and a pendant. Before he finished the pendant he asked me what my favorite Bible verse was. I told him Numbers 23:19. When I received the pendant and the ring in the mail he had inscribed the back of the pendant with Numbers 23:19. A constant reminder.

This morning I needed to be reminded again of that verse.

“God is not a human who lies or a mortal who changes his mind.
When he says something, he will do it; when he makes a promise, he will fulfill it.” Numbers 23:19 CJB

I needed to remember that! When God makes a promise He always keeps it. He doesn’t lie – He can’t lie!! If God ever lied he would no longer be perfect and so He would no longer be God.

Every page of the Bible is filled with promise. God gave His word so we would know His purpose and plan for us. He wants us to depend on him.

A few weeks back I told you about the friendship that Abraham and God shared. God made him a promise that he would have a son. Then when Isaac was about 12 or 13 the Lord asked Abraham to offer his son as a sacrifice.

Abraham got up early in the morning and started his travel to the land of Moriah. It was a three day journey. It was Abraham, Isaac, and his servants. Isaac saw the wood and the fire needed for making the sacrifice but there was no lamb. So Isaac asked his father about it. Here is Abraham’s answer.

“7-8 Isaac said, “Father, we have the coals and the wood, but where is the lamb for the sacrifice?”

“My son,” Abraham answered, “God will provide the lamb.” Genesis 22:7-8 CEV

Abraham had every confidence in the Lord. The Lord had blessed him with a son and so he could trust the Lord with his son’s life.  God doesn’t lie and He keeps his promise.

When they got to the place on the mountain where they were to build the altar Abraham laid the wood and then he placed his son on it. Here is what God said:

“ But the Lord’s angel shouted from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!”

“Here I am!” he answered.

12 “Don’t hurt the boy or harm him in any way!” the angel said. “Now I know that you truly obey God, because you were willing to offer him your only son.”

13 Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught by its horns in the bushes. So he took the ram and sacrificed it in place of his son.

14 Abraham named that place “The Lord Will Provide.”                Genesis 22:11-14 CEV

That was an extreme situation but Abraham knew he was serving a God who always provides.

King David said in Psalm 23 that the Lord provides so much that “my cup runs over”.

The Apostle Paul said in Philippians 4 that God supplies all he needed.

Jesus said in John 10 that He came to give us abundant life, life that is overflowing.

Oh yes, all these promises came flooding in today when I began to focus on that one verse, Numbers 23:19. It is impossible for God to lie and since that is true all the rest of God’s Word is true as well.

Have you began to doubt that God is going to keep a promise He made to you? It seems it has taken so long and you’re getting weary during the wait. Hold on!  God doesn’t lie.

God will provide!

Attitude of Gratitude

Are you familiar with the characters of Winnie the Pooh?

Pooh, Tigger, Piglet, Eeyore, Roo, Rabbit, Owl, Kanga and Christopher Robin.

These characters have taught me a lot about life in my adult years. I have learned to work with people and the vast characteristics of their personalities by seeing how A. A. Milne’s characters interact.

The thing that amazes me the most is how Pooh Bear is always looking on the bright side of life. When he talks with Piglet and Roo he teaches them to look for the good. When Eeyore is gloomy, which is always, Pooh tries to help him find things to enjoy and when Tigger gets in to trouble from being too boisterous Pooh is there to encourage him.

I would like  think that A.A. Milne was influenced by Scripture when he wrote these stories. He definitely has a way of conveying the verses I want us to look at this morning.

“Each one of you is part of the body of Christ, and you were chosen to live together in peace. So let the peace that comes from Christ control your thoughts. And be grateful. 16 Let the message about Christ completely fill your lives, while you use all your wisdom to teach and instruct each other. With thankful hearts, sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. 17 Whatever you say or do should be done in the name of the Lord Jesus, as you give thanks to God the Father because of him.” Colossians 3:15-17 CEV

Be grateful, whatever you do or say let it be done with an attitude of gratitude.

Evaluate your day. Do you spend more time complaining about things or being grateful?  When you find yourself complaining about the kids and the messes they leave be grateful that your house is filled with their lives and laughter. Have a husband that doesn’t pick up his socks – be grateful your husband has legs and feet. Annoyed by the drivers on the highway; stop and appreciate that you have a car that runs and can get you from place to place.

Let everything be done with thanksgiving.

Dave has been reading a book written by an Army wife in the late 1800’s. She describes daily life, traveling from post to post in the West. She and her husband were stationed in Tucson, in the summer. At the end of each chapter he looks at me and says “we have it so easy”.

There is always something to be thankful for; sometimes we just need to experience an attitude adjustment.

“So be very careful how you live. Live wisely, not like fools. 16 I mean that you should use every opportunity you have for doing good, because these are evil times. 17 So don’t be foolish with your lives, but learn what the Lord wants you to do. 18 Don’t be drunk with wine, which will ruin your life, but be filled with the Spirit. 19 Encourage each other with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your hearts to the Lord. 20 Always give thanks to God the Father for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Ephesians 5:15-20 ERV

These words were written by the Apostle Paul. His daily life was subject to constant harassment. He was beaten, stoned, shipwrecked, imprisoned and still he wrote these words of instruction. Encourage one another – always give thanks!

An attitude of gratitude! It’s a godly trait.

“ I am so happy, and I thank the Lord that you have again shown your care for me. You continued to care about me, but there was no way for you to show it. 11 I am telling you this, but not because I need something. I have learned to be satisfied with what I have and with whatever happens. 12 I know how to live when I am poor and when I have plenty. I have learned the secret of how to live through any kind of situation—when I have enough to eat or when I am hungry, when I have everything I need or when I have nothing. 13 Christ is the one who gives me the strength I need to do whatever I must do.” Philippians 4:10-13 ERV

Be content – that simply means to be grateful. You might not have the largest house or the best clothes; your bank account may be meager compared to some but to others you are rich. Too young, too old, too short, too tall, too single, too married – none of these can or will affect your outlook if you chose to be grateful.

One final encouragement.

“Always be filled with joy in the Lord. I will say it again. Be filled with joy. 5 Let everyone see that you are gentle and kind. The Lord is coming soon. 6 Don’t worry about anything, but pray and ask God for everything you need, always giving thanks for what you have. 7 And because you belong to Christ Jesus, God’s peace will stand guard over all your thoughts and feelings. His peace can do this far better than our human minds.” Philippians 4:4-7 ERV

Someone needs your smile today and I’m sure someone needs your hug. Thank God that you can be used to bring joy to someone.

A World Changer

This morning I would like to share with you one more person who heard God speak to him in a dramatic way.

Most of the time we refer to this man as Paul, the Apostle. However, that wasn’t always his name. As a younger man he went by the name of Saul. He was a very religious man and was highly educated. He was one of those who thought that the ministry of Jesus was heresy.

He made it his life’s ambition to stop the message of the Christians. He wanted to wipe out anyone who dared to proclaim that Jesus was the Christ, the Messiah that the Jews had been looking for.

He stood, holding the coats of the Pharisees, as they stoned Stephen, a young Christian, to death. He went to the courts and asked for documents so that he could round up Christians to have them killed.

Yes, this man’s name was Saul.

Why would God speak to a man like this? A man who hated so deeply. I don’t have the answer. All I know is HE did and the world was changed.

“ Saul approved the stoning of Stephen. Some faithful followers of the Lord buried Stephen and mourned very much for him.

At that time the church in Jerusalem suffered terribly. All of the Lord’s followers, except the apostles, were scattered everywhere in Judea and Samaria. 3 Saul started making a lot of trouble for the church. He went from house to house, arresting men and women and putting them in jail.” Acts 8:1-3 CEV

One day Saul was on his way from Jerusalem to Damascus when he encountered the Lord.

“Saul kept on threatening to kill the Lord’s followers. He even went to the high priest 2 and asked for letters to the Jewish leaders in Damascus. He did this because he wanted to arrest and take to Jerusalem any man or woman who had accepted the Lord’s Way.[a] 3 When Saul had almost reached Damascus, a bright light from heaven suddenly flashed around him. 4 He fell to the ground and heard a voice that said, “Saul! Saul! Why are you so cruel to me?”

5 “Who are you?” Saul asked.

“I am Jesus,” the Lord answered. “I am the one you are so cruel to. 6 Now get up and go into the city, where you will be told what to do.”

7 The men with Saul stood there speechless. They had heard the voice, but they had not seen anyone. 8 Saul got up from the ground, and when he opened his eyes, he could not see a thing. Someone then led him by the hand to Damascus, 9 and for three days he was blind and did not eat or drink.” Acts 9:1-9 CEV

There’s another man who is important to this story. His name is Ananias. He was living in Damascus and he loved the Lord. The Lord spoke to him in a vision and told him to go help Saul.

Help Saul? He has all the necessary papers to have me arrested. Really?  Yes, really. Ananias was obedient to what God told him.

“The Lord said to Ananias, “Go! I have chosen him to tell foreigners, kings, and the people of Israel about me. 16 I will show him how much he must suffer for worshiping in my name.”

17 Ananias left and went into the house where Saul was staying. Ananias placed his hands on him and said, “Saul, the Lord Jesus has sent me. He is the same one who appeared to you along the road. He wants you to be able to see and to be filled with the Holy Spirit.” Acts 9:15-17 CEV

When Saul received his sight back he immediately began to worship with the Christians in Damascus. They were skeptical of him at first because they knew this was the man who had come to have them arrested. Yet they could not deny the fact that things he spoke about Jesus were true. He spoke with great conviction and power.

From there Saul went back to Jerusalem to join himself to the very people he had been persecuting.

“ Saul moved about freely with the followers in Jerusalem and told everyone about the Lord. 29 He was always arguing with the Jews who spoke Greek, and so they tried to kill him. 30 But the followers found out about this and took Saul to Caesarea. From there they sent him to the city of Tarsus.

31 The church in Judea, Galilee, and Samaria now had a time of peace and kept on worshiping the Lord. The church became stronger, as the Holy Spirit encouraged it and helped it grow.” Acts 9:28-31 CEV

Saul continued to live and preach. Since he was brought up to be a religious leader he knew the Scriptures and once he realized that Jesus was who He said He was Saul became a powerful minister.

He began travelling the world over preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ. Saul, became better known as Paul. He is the one the Lord used to write two thirds of the New Testament. His teachings are fundamental to us and they way we live our lives committed to Christ.

Paul considered everything he had accomplished in his life garbage when it compared to his new life in Christ.

“But Christ has shown me that what I once thought was valuable is worthless. 8 Nothing is as wonderful as knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. I have given up everything else and count it all as garbage. All I want is Christ 9 and to know that I belong to him. I could not make myself acceptable to God by obeying the Law of Moses. God accepted me simply because of my faith in Christ.” Philippians 3:7-9

He never forgot who he had been but he didn’t let that hold him back. He definitely experienced the truth he wrote about when he said:

“ Anyone who belongs to Christ is a new person. The past is forgotten, and everything is new. 18 God has done it all! He sent Christ to make peace between himself and us, and he has given us the work of making peace between himself and others.” II Corinthians 5:17-18 CEV

We need to be like Paul. Forget the past filled with its failures and mistakes and go forward knowing that we have been given a new life. A life filled with peace and a relationship with God.

If you listen today you’ll hear God speaking to your heart! He has a purpose and a plan designed specifically for you!

How Big Is Our God?

As we start the day I need to ask, “how big is our God?”.

Do problems and stress keep us awake at night? Do we find ourselves in turmoil over the day’s situations? As we raise our kids and provide for our families are we undone by the pressures that surround us?

So, how big is our God?

“I pray that the God of peace will give you every good thing you need so that you can do what he wants. God is the one who raised from death our Lord Jesus, the Great Shepherd of his sheep. He raised him because Jesus sacrificed his blood to begin the new agreement that never ends. I pray that God will work through Jesus Christ to do the things in us that please him. To him be glory forever. Amen.” Hebrews 13:19-21 ERV

Do we see God the Father as a God of peace or do we see Him as someone we need to be wary of because “we just never know what God’s going to do”?

I hope it’s the first, because through Jesus’ sacrifice, he made the way for us to be reconciled to God. To be made sons of God so that we could call him “Abba Father”.

Abba was a term of endearment like daddy or papa.

“Since you are now God’s children, he has sent the Spirit of his Son into your hearts. The Spirit cries out, “ Abba, Father.” 7 Now you are not slaves like before. You are God’s children, and you will receive everything he promised his children.” Galatians 4:6-7 ERV

Did you notice that this verse says since we are God’s children we will receive everything He promised us? God has not lied in the whole of eternity and I can guarantee that He will not start lying now.  If God has promised it, He will come through every time!

Sometimes, we don’t even know what we need! We become so exhausted and overwhelmed that we lose perspective. That’s when we pray like the Apostle Paul did and God steps in with the answers.

“I pray that God will take care of all your needs with the wonderful blessings that come from Christ Jesus! ” Philippians 4:19 CEV

We are also told in Hebrews that we can come boldly to His throne to find help in time of need. I can see it now – like little kids we are invited to come running in, climb up on the throne and sit in the Father’s lap and tell Him we have a need and He by grace provides the help we are looking for.

“With Jesus as our high priest, we can feel free to come before God’s throne where there is grace. There we receive mercy and kindness to help us when we need it.” Hebrews 4:16

So let’s take time to thank Him today for his grace and mercy and if you have had a misconception of God and His love for you ask Him to show you just how much He loves you today. He will!

My God is big!
