Going South

Many in the continental U.S. like to travel south every year. We call them winter visitors. This year some of them stayed longer than expected because they felt it wasn’t safe to head home. There was so much uncertainty – would they be jeopardizing their health, would there be a safe place to stay while on the road, could they fly safely. So many questions.

We should all ask these same questions about life in general. Our daily routine needs to be taken to the Lord in prayer and He will guide.

Years ago when we were young in faith and learning to listen to the Lord’s voice we had a cowboy preacher, a dear friend, tell us this: “If God says go South, He will provide; If you go North you’ll think you died!”

Now that’s not scripture but it is Biblical. Solomon put it this way: “Trust the LORD completely, and don’t depend on your own knowledge. 6 With every step you take, think about what he wants, and he will help you go the right way. 7 Don’t trust in your own wisdom, but fear and respect the LORD and stay away from evil. 8 If you do this, it will be like a refreshing drink and medicine for your body.” Proverb 3:5-8 ERV

And then this one: “Turn to the LORD for help in everything you do, and you will be successful. 4 The LORD has a plan for everything.” Proverbs 16:3-4a ERV

God has a plan for each day – it doesn’t really matter what the activities are in the day He has a plan! Some days His plan is to change our plan, His plan is better.

When we listen, He speaks and when we follow His leading we are blessed! We have a choice – it would be silly to lean to our own understanding since following Him is the right way to go and His wisdom is perfect.

“Today I am giving you a choice. You may choose the blessing or the curse. 27 You will get the blessing if you listen and obey the commands of the LORD your God that I have told you today. 28 But you will get the curse if you refuse to listen and obey the commands of the LORD your God. So don’t stop living the way I command you today, and don’t follow other gods that you don’t know.” Deuteronomy 11:26-28 ERV

Trust the Lord today. He loves us and His desire for us is good!

“I say this because I know the plans that I have for you.” This message is from the LORD. “I have good plans for you. I don’t plan to hurt you. I plan to give you hope and a good future. 12 Then you will call my name. You will come to me and pray to me, and I will listen to you.” Jeremiah 29:11-12 ERV

Go South today – He will provide!!!

Preparing For A Harvest

In the days when fields were cultivated by hand rocks had to be removed before the seeds could be planted. The ground had to be broken up and turned over either with a shovel, hoe or a plow. The stones would be unearthed and removed, generally they were placed at the edge of the fields.

The same holds true in our lives. The Bible teaches us that God’s word is good seed and if we plant it in our hearts we will receive a plentiful harvest.

“I said, ‘Plant the good seeds of righteousness,  and you will harvest a crop of love. Plow up the hard ground of your hearts, for now is the time to seek the Lord, that he may come and shower righteousness upon you.’” Hosea 10:12 NLT

If seed is just scattered on top of the dirt and not planted in the soil properly production will be greatly hindered. Some of the seed will be eaten by birds, some will blow away, some will be hampered by the rocks and some will find good soil and grow well.

It’s a foolish farmer that sows seed so frivolously. With a little extra work and a little more time the ground can be properly prepared and a greater yield achieved. I’ve learned that lesson well from gardening. Plants don’t like rock infested ground. The roots struggle as they seek to go deeper in the soil, carrots that encounter rocks during the growth are misshaped and twisted when they are harvested.

“Now listen to the meaning of the story about the farmer: 19 The seeds that fell along the road are the people who hear the message about the kingdom, but don’t understand it. Then the evil one comes and snatches the message from their hearts. 20 The seeds that fell on rocky ground are the people who gladly hear the message and accept it right away. 21 But they don’t have deep roots, and they don’t last very long. As soon as life gets hard or the message gets them in trouble, they give up.

22 The seeds that fell among the thornbushes are also people who hear the message. But they start worrying about the needs of this life and are fooled by the desire to get rich. So the message gets choked out, and they never produce anything. 23 The seeds that fell on good ground are the people who hear and understand the message. They produce as much as a hundred or sixty or thirty times what was planted.” Matthew 13:18-23 CEV

Our heart is the soil, God’s word is the seed. Prepare the ground, pick out the rocks, protect the seed and we’ll see a harvest of good fruit in our lives!

Stay Focused

I remember those mornings when we lived in Idaho and Montana that I would sit quietly with my hot coffee and watch the icicles melting on the eaves. Each droplet that awakened from frozen slumber to fluid movement meant the earth would soon be showing new signs of growth.

The warmth of the sun reminded us all that the long winter days were over and spring would begin to blossom very soon.

Yesterday we learned from our governor that the “long winter” of the stay-at-home order would be over and life, once again, would begin to bloom. However, before everyone begins to rush out and reclaim previous activity I would like to remind us all to stay focused.

Much the same as I focused on that melting icicle that would send its moisture into the earth to awaken the seeds that had been dormant through the cold months of winter I would like us to focus on the kindness and sharing that we experienced during the last few months.

Time with family took on richer meaning. Sharing a moment of laughter with a friend was a cherished gem. And our quiet prayers for safety and protection brought a richness and strength to each day.

Let’s not lose sight of what we learned and experienced during this time.

“I want you to realize that I continue to work as hard as I know how for you, and also for the Christians over at Laodicea. Not many of you have met me face-to-face, but that doesn’t make any difference. Know that I’m on your side, right alongside you. You’re not in this alone.

2-4 I want you woven into a tapestry of love, in touch with everything there is to know of God. Then you will have minds confident and at rest, focused on Christ, God’s great mystery. All the richest treasures of wisdom and knowledge are embedded in that mystery and nowhere else. And we’ve been shown the mystery! I’m telling you this because I don’t want anyone leading you off on some wild-goose chase, after other so-called mysteries, or “the Secret.” Colossians 2:1-4 MSG

Let’s stay focused on Christ and our relationship of reliance on Him and His strength. There will be challenges ahead, many of them, and so, we must remember where our strength and peace come from.

I don’t know how things are where you live. Maybe you’re still being asked to stay at home or perhaps your state has already opened. But it’s not the condition of the state that makes the difference in our lives, it’s the condition of the heart.

Just like the relationship between the sun and the icicle our hearts are warmed by the Son, softened to make way for new growth and a greater capacity to love.

Safe in the Storm

What keeps us grounded when life’s storms have our boat rocking? Storms will come. The last two and one half months have proven that. And it doesn’t appear this current storm is over yet.

Storms of life: health, finances, accidents, death, divorce, family issues or physical storms (tornadoes, blizzards, hurricanes, earthquakes). Where do we find peace and safety?

Peter was in a physical storm and he learned that he would sink or walk based on one thing – the Word of God. Jesus said “Come” and on that one word directive from the mouth of the Son of God, he walked.

And then he took his eyes off Jesus and the Bible tells us he started to sink. Jesus grabbed him and together, they walked back to the boat.

During all this COVID-19 crisis some have been content to stay in the boat just like most of the disciples. Some have seen Jesus, coming towards them, walking on the water and asked to join Him and have heard Him say “Come”. Quickly they jump out of the boat and head for Jesus. Then there’s a news report about failing businesses or a neighbor/loved one is diagnosed with the virus and they start to sink.

Jesus reaches down and lifts them up and together they walk back to the boat. Safety in life isn’t in the boat. The disciples that were in it were scared, almost frozen with fear. Their place of safety was with Jesus. He was the One the winds and the waves obeyed. He was the One who brought peace.

“When they saw him, they thought he was a ghost. They were terrified and started screaming. 27 At once, Jesus said to them, “Don’t worry! I am Jesus. Don’t be afraid.” 28 Peter replied, “Lord, if it is really you, tell me to come to you on the water.” 29 “Come on!” Jesus said. Peter then got out of the boat and started walking on the water toward him.

30 But when Peter saw how strong the wind was, he was afraid and started sinking. “Save me, Lord!” he shouted. 31 Right away, Jesus reached out his hand. He helped Peter up and said, “You surely don’t have much faith. Why do you doubt?”32 When Jesus and Peter got into the boat, the wind died down. 33 The men in the boat worshiped Jesus and said, “You really are the Son of God!” Matthew 14:26-33 CEV

Jesus spoke just a couple of words but when it’s a Word from God, it’s enough. “Come”. “Light be”. “Lazarus come forth”. The power of God is expressed in His word and His word will not fail.

In the midst of the storm we will be at peace, safe, when we are trusting in God’s word. If we are going to be grounded, we have to be standing on the word of God. It is the only sure and firm foundation.

“Grass dies and flowers fall, but the word of our God lasts forever.” Isaiah 40:8

” Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.” Matthew 24:35

“Whoever hears these teachings of mine and obeys them is like a wise man who built his house on rock. 25 It rained hard, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house. But it did not fall because it was built on rock.” Matthew 7:24-25

There’s an old hymn that came to mind, it was written in 1876 by Russell Carter. The second stanza is particularly relevant.

standing on the promises of God.

Stand on His Word – it will never fail!

Made Right – Ready for Use

I know everyone has bought an item at one time or another and found one of those “inspected by” tags. Do you ever wonder who “inspected by No. 46” is? And if you find a flaw in the product, were they having a bad day and just didn’t do their job right? I know it’s silly but I wonder about those things.

However, I have never wondered if God was having a bad day when He told the Holy Spirit to put His seal of approval on us – we are made right and ready for use.

“It’s in Christ that you, once you heard the truth and believed it (this Message of your salvation), found yourselves home free—signed, sealed, and delivered by the Holy Spirit. This signet from God is the first installment on what’s coming, a reminder that we’ll get everything God has planned for us, a praising and glorious life.” Ephesians 1:13-14 MSG

This signet that Paul is talking about was the seal which was placed on every document that came directly from the king or ruler. Hot wax was pour on the parchment and the king’s ring was pressed in to it, leaving an impression to authenticate His approval.

We have been sealed by the Holy Spirit; this marking says we have been made right and are ready for use.

“So that one sin of Adam brought the punishment of death to all people. But in the same way, Christ did something so good that it makes all people right with God. And that brings them true life. 19 One man disobeyed God and many became sinners. But in the same way, one man obeyed God and many will be made right.” Romans 5:18-19 ERV

Made right! When God the Father sees us, He sees that we have been made right! No junk or second rate product here. We are completely new in our life with Him.

“When anyone is in Christ, it is a whole new world. The old things are gone; suddenly, everything is new!” II Corinthians 5:17 ERV

We’re not good enough to do this on our own. No, we have to accept what Jesus has done. There was a time when we were so strapped financially that we couldn’t pay the electric bill. There wasn’t enough money and we didn’t know what we were going to do. A dear friend offered to pay it for us. We could have refused His offer but we didn’t and the bill was marked “paid in full”. Jesus paid the price for our sin and God has marked the account “paid in full”.

“For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.” II Corinthians 5:21 NLT

Because of Jesus we have been “made right” and are ready for use!

Sunrise Sunset

My yesterday was amazing! I hope yours was too. I was greeted with a beautiful sunrise, a warm and welcoming good morning hug from my heavenly Father. Although the sunset was more demure, I experienced the Father’s presence in much the same way as a sleepy babe welcomes a gentle kiss goodnight.

“May the Lord’s name be praised now and forever. 3 May the Lord’s name be praised
 from where the sun rises to where it goes down. 4 The Lord is higher than all nations. His glory rises to the skies.” Psalm 113:2-4 ERV

And here I am this morning expecting more of the same. When we look for the Father our heart always finds Him.

I have a soft fleece throw that I keep on the couch. I snuggle into it every day. It’s not that I’m cold or chilled, definitely not in this Arizona high desert, but it’s comforting. The comfort I experience in sensing God’s presence is so much greater! When I’m praying for friends and family who are going through a particularly rough time there is a peace that covers me, much like that blanket, and I know that the Lord has taken charge and I can rest from worry.

There’s also a joy that comes bubbling up in my heart when the Lord shares some new idea with me or when I’m reminded of an old promise.

Most of our plants are on a watering system and as I sit here in the morning I hear the pop of the timer and then the gentle soaking mist of the water flowing from the nozzles. How refreshing it is to be constantly watered. That’s what joy in the Father’s presence is like to me – a continual refreshing.

“You have shown me the path to life, and you make me glad by being near to me. Sitting at your right side, I will always be joyful.” Psalm 16:11 CEV

And finally, I have the peace of the avian chorus both morning and evening. Right now I’m listening to the quail, wren, dove, meadowlark, sparrow, finch and owl. They start the day singing praises for all that will be and end it the same way. They remind me to always be grateful for all the Lord has provided.

“I tell you not to worry about your life. Don’t worry about having something to eat, drink, or wear. Isn’t life more than food or clothing? 26 Look at the birds in the sky! They don’t plant or harvest. They don’t even store grain in barns. Yet your Father in heaven takes care of them. Aren’t you worth more than birds?” Matthew 6:25-26 CEV

Yes, it’s going to be another amazing day – a day to experience the Father’s presence, His comfort, joy and provision.

“Turn to the Lord! He can still be found.  Call out to God! He is near.” Isaiah 55:6 CEV

From sunrise to sunset all of creation reminds us that God is near and that He loves you and me!

Step by Step

The other morning Dave and I were out on our walk and another couple we see quite frequently were also walking. We stopped long enough to say our “good mornings” and she asked if we keep track of how far we have walked. I told her I knew each days’ walking but I wasn’t sure about so far this year.

This morning I decided to find out. I went to the fit bit app and checked it out. I was surprised by what I found; so far this year we have walked 236 miles. Now, if you’re a runner or a workout enthusiast this is far from extraordinary but to this 67 year old great grandmother it is a goodly distance.

But how did it happen? I never could have accomplished this in a week or even a month but over time it adds up. One step at a time; step by step.

And that’s how it is with our Christian walk. It’s step by step. We don’t start out spending hours each day reading the Bible or praying. We don’t conquer fear in one single situation or learn to control our temper with one confrontation. No, it’s step by step.

“Let the wonderful kindness and the understanding that come from our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ help you to keep on growing. Praise Jesus now and forever! Amen.” II Peter 3:18 CEV

We grow in our understanding of God’s grace and love on a daily basis. When we take time to think about just those two amazing characteristics of our heavenly Father it’s mind boggling. Questions arise: How could He love and forgive me the way He does? Does He never get tired of me and the amount of times I fail? Will I ever exhaust His grace?

Our heavenly Father is the Father of all fathers. Does an earthly parent get tired of helping their child learn to walk? Do they ever just throw up their hands and say “forget it, they’ll never learn”? No! They are there to help, to steady, to encourage until walking is mastered and then it’s on to the next skill that needs to be learned.

“And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. 7 Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.” Colossians 2:6-7 NLT

Follow Him! Step by Step – walk with Jesus through the pages of the Bible. Watch Jesus relate to a dishonest tax collector, a prostitute, a man eaten up with leprosy and the easily distracted disciples. It’s here we gain understanding of the love that Jesus freely gives to all of us and it’s here we grow in grace, receiving blessings from the Lord that we don’t deserve and can’t earn.

“Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. 18 And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. 19 May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.” Ephesians 3:17-19 NLT

Yes, our Christian walk is a growing process. We grow in our understanding of God’s love, His grace and so our faith grows too. Day by day and step by step.

Do Something Fun!

It’s time to do something fun! Here in Arizona a lot of people have pools in their backyards and it’s the perfect time to get the kids and head outside. Several weeks back our grandson, who is 4 1/2, talked about things he couldn’t do because of Corona. The playgrounds in the neighborhood were closed, he couldn’t have play dates with his friends, he couldn’t go to church, he couldn’t go to Auntie’s and he couldn’t go camping with us because the campground was closed.

I’m sure many of us feel like he did. His whole world had shut down.

But the world isn’t shut down; it’s just been rearranged for a while. This is Mother’s Day weekend so Mom’s let’s take the lead. Let’s ask the family for suggestions on what’s something fun they would like to do this weekend. Nothing fills a Mom’s heart more than the laughter and joy of her family.

“A cheerful heart is good medicine…”Proverbs 17:22 NLT

We should all take a big dose of anti-Corona medicine. Let’s laugh and have fun! It will do all of us a lot of good. Have s’mores for dinner, don’t just send the kids out to play – go join them in the sprinkler or the pool. Watch cartoons, sing silly songs, play tag or ring-around-the rosy, go for a bike ride, have a backyard picnic. And when the day is done, have bedtime prayers and thank our heavenly Father for the joy that we had with our family. Thank Him for the wonderful gift of love!

Now for us who are empty nesters or are all by ourselves may I suggest that we call, Facetime, Skype or Zoom with our families and special friends. Take time to enjoy their presence, they truly are a gift. I had a friend post that she had lunch with one of her friends. They both got take out, drove their cars to a parking lot, opened their windows and visited while they had lunch.

God likes to have fun. After all, He said when we get to heaven there will be no more tears. It will be a time of joy, so start now.

“I’m thanking you, God, from a full heart, I’m writing the book on your wonders. I’m whistling, laughing, and jumping for joy; I’m singing your song, High God.” Psalm 9:1-2 MSG

No excuses – start planning now – fill your weekend with joy!

National Day of Prayer

Today, the first Thursday in May, was designated as a National Day of Prayer by President Reagan in 1988. However, President Harry Truman signed a bill into law which established a National Day of Prayer in 1952.

Since the early days of our country prayer has been the backbone of strength for our leaders. Benjamin Franklin asked then President George Washington to open each day with prayer seeking God’s guidance. President Abraham Lincoln called the nation to prayer during the Civil War and declared a day of Thanksgiving. Down through our history presidents have asked the citizens of our nation to pray.

The Apostle Paul gave us this instruction:

“First of all, I ask that you pray for all people. Ask God to bless them and give them what they need. And give thanks. 2 You should pray for rulers and for all who have authority. Pray for these leaders so that we can live quiet and peaceful lives—lives full of devotion to God and respect for him. 3 This is good and pleases God our Savior. 4 God wants everyone to be saved and to fully understand the truth.” I Timothy 2:1-4 ERV

We should begin each day praying for our President, The Congress, our Supreme Court, and the State and Local governments. We should pray that they represent us with honesty and integrity, that their actions are directed by Almighty God. We should also pray that those who ignore the Lord’s leading are convicted of their ways and repent or are removed from office.

And we should pray that our hearts are pure. We need to be citizens who love God, our country and work to preserve and protect it.

“if My people who are called by My name put away their pride and pray, and look for My face, and turn from their sinful ways, then I will hear from heaven. I will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. 15 Now My eyes will be open. And My ears will hear the prayer that is made in this place.” II Chronicles 7:14-15 ERV

God’s heart has always been open to the prayers of His people. He calls us to pray so that our land and our hearts will be healed.

I ask you to join me today in prayer for our nation and our fellow citizens. Each time we see a flag today, let’s whisper a prayer. Let’s pray for wisdom, strength, actions of justice and honor. Let’s pray for humble hearts, in all of us. Hearts of repentance. Pray for healing.

“Father, in the name of Jesus, the name above every name, we pray for our nation and our leaders this day. Let our President and members of Congress, Governors and Justices be men and women of honesty and integrity. Let them turn to You for guidance in the laws and judgements they make. Let them work together to preserve our nation and not destroy it. Let them work together for the good of this country; laying aside partisan issues and truly be a leadership that is by the people, of the people and for the people. Father, forgive us for our grumbling and complaining instead of praying and encouraging those in leadership. We repent and humbly ask that You heal our land. Your word says if we will call You will answer; if we ask we will receive. So we thank You now for hearing our prayers – cleansing our hearts and healing our land. May You receive glory for who You are. Amen and Amen.”

The Bible tells us when we ask the Father for something in Jesus name, it is done by our Father in heaven. I truly believe that God heard that prayer and that He is working on our behalf.

One other Scripture I would like to share in closing comes from a letter that the Apostle Paul wrote to the Christians living in Thessalonica.

“Be full of joy all the time. 17 Never stop praying. 18 In everything give thanks. This is what God wants you to do because of Christ Jesus.” I Thessalonians 5:16-18 NLV

Let’s never stop praying and giving thanks for all that God has blessed us with. Having this perspective fills us with joy!

Praise God for this nation we live in. In spite of her shortcomings she is still the best nation on earth.

GPS to the Rescue

On one of our trips to Iowa one summer Dave asked me to direct him through Des Moines. We had been there the summer before and knew if we took one road it would take us right down through town. We had been told that there was a way to circumvent that and it was my job to make sure we were on that road.

I hate pressure like that – we have always teased that Dave should have been a professional navigator. He loves maps, looks at them for fun. Me, on the other hand, not so much. I can read maps if I have too but I need plenty of time, no spur of the moment decisions for me. And then there’s the additional pressure of getting it wrong and having to backtrack while hearing “I thought you said this was the right way”. Yep, I hate that.

Well, we got around Des Moines successfully and didn’t end up downtown. He did question me a couple of times but I was looking at the computer screen and following the direction that I was given. Thank God for GPS.

Have you ever been lost and not sure how to find your way? Did you use GPS?

For those of us who have been lost in life I have good news. There is a GPS system that you can rely on completely. It doesn’t need to be updated for the newly developed roads and it won’t drain the battery on your phone or lose connection. It’s always right on and the voice that dictates the proper directions is soothing and never intrusive.

GPS – GOD’S PLAN of SALVATION

We all start out lost; not having any direction in our lives – badly in need of the only perfect solution. GPS (God’s Plan of Salvation).

“Jesus answered, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. The only way to the Father is through me.” John 14:6

Anyone can have this GPS. It won’t cost you a thing because Jesus already paid the price for you.

“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:” John 1:12

“And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved” Acts 2:21

The only installation instruction required is that you ask and you will receive.

“All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.” John 6:37

It is so wonderful to know that many of those reading this have received this GPS. It’s being used around the world by millions. But there are some who still haven’t applied it to daily use. Maybe they think it’s too expensive, it will cost too much. However, it’s been purchased for them, the price has been paid and now everyone can have it free of charge. God the Father is waiting with open arms to give it to all.

“Christ is the sacrifice that takes away our sins and the sins of all the world’s people.” I John 2:2

“They said to him, “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved—you and all who live in your house.” Acts 16:30-31

With this GPS, God’s Plan of Salvation we’ll always be the right road!
