Looking Grown Up

I didn’t intend for these last few blogs to be a Bible Study on the book of Ephesians but that seems to be the direction they are taking. I hope you don’t mind; in fact, let me encourage you to take the next few weeks to slowly read and ponder the teachings of Paul to the Christians in Ephesus.

Yesterday I kept a watch on my own actions and heart attitudes to make sure that I was showing growth in the area of love.

Sometimes when we are applying Biblical principles to our lives it’s a bit like playing dress up. Do you remember trying on your mom or dad’s shoes and coat when you were little? For some of us that’s going back a long way. But I do remember trying on my mom’s high heels and a necklace or two. I also remember watching our kids do the same with our clothing. Tromping around the house in our boots and hats – it still brings a smile to my face. They wanted to be like Dave and I.

And that’s what growing in the love of God is, acting like the Father. Imitating Him.

“ You are God’s dear children, so try to be like him. 2 Live a life of love. Love others just as Christ loved us. He gave himself for us—a sweet-smelling offering and sacrifice to God.” Ephesians 5:1-2 ERV

It takes a while for the character of Christ to develop. That’s why I mentioned a growth chart yesterday. When we look back over the last month or year, we should see a difference in how we reacted in certain situations and have a greater victory over temptations.

Less apt to be bitter, more apt to replace it with forgiveness. Less prone to be critical and more bent on being an encourager. Subtle little differences but all growth is good.

“You must be made new in your hearts and in your thinking. 24 Be that new person who was made to be like God, truly good and pleasing to him…29 When you talk, don’t say anything bad. But say the good things that people need—whatever will help them grow stronger. ” Ephesians 4:23-24, 29 ERV

Do you remember years ago when someone came out with the acronym WWJD? People wore bracelets, necklaces, signed notes with WWJD, What Would Jesus Do. That’s exactly what the Apostle Paul is telling us to implement.

We might feel awkward, changing life actions can be. But let me encourage you to keep at it. Runners don’t start with a marathon as their first race, weight lifters never start by lifting 200 pounds. A chef wasn’t successful with their first souffle and we won’t imitate Christ perfectly in our first attempts either but keep at it, don’t give up.

Mastery in imitating Christ is a goal we should all strive for; it’s the life He has designed for us. Let’s grow up into His image!

Growing Up

I’m going to ask you to do something a little different in today’s blog. I would like you to take a few minutes and assess your growth in 2021. No, I’m not talking about any weight you may have gained or lost; I’m talking about growth in your capacity to love.

When our kids were younger, we had a spot in the kitchen where we marked their growth. It was interesting to see how much taller they had become over a year’s time. It was also interesting to see how their growth slowed once they reached their middle teens.

Yesterday, we read the Apostle Paul’s prayer that we would understand the depth, height, width and length of God’s love for us and that in understanding we would grow in that kind of love. With a true understanding of God’s kind of love we grow – we grow to be filled with everything God has for us.

The reoccurring theme of the Bible is that – understanding and growing in God’s kind of love. Remember Jesus talking to his disciples, how many times did He tell them to love one another? He said that their love for one another would be proof to the world that they were His disciples.

Paul carries that theme forward in the letters he wrote to the different Christian fellowships he discipled. Yesterday’s teaching was from Ephesians, a letter written to the Christians in Ephesus. Today I want to share with you some more of his writings from that same book.

These verses are a “growth” chart in love.

“Always be humble and gentle. Be patient and accept each other with love. 3 You are joined together with peace through the Spirit. Do all you can to continue as you are, letting peace hold you together…13 This work must continue until we are all joined together in what we believe and in what we know about the Son of God. Our goal is to become like a full-grown man—to look just like Christ and have all his perfection…We will grow to be like Christ in every way. He is the head, 16 and the whole body depends on him. All the parts of the body are joined and held together, with each part doing its own work. This causes the whole body to grow and to be stronger in love.” Ephesians 4:2,3,13,15-16 ERV

Christians are often referred to as the body of Christ; Christ is the head, and we are all parts of His body. It’s important that we develop, we grow, to be like Christ. It isn’t enough to say that we love the Lord, there needs to be tangible evidence of that love.

I have to admit that there have been seasons in my life where there wasn’t much evidence of growth. I was concerned about my own needs and wants. There have been times that I have been selfish and unforgiving – no upward development at all.

“ Never be bitter, angry, or mad. Never shout angrily or say things to hurt others. Never do anything evil. 32 Be kind and loving to each other. Forgive each other the same as God forgave you through Christ.” Ephesians 4:31-32 ERV

We have to be honest with the Father and ourselves if we are to grow. We need to recognize our failings and ask for His help. When we do, we can be certain that He will provide us with the strength to change.

Let’s make 2022 the year we grow up in love!

Above All This…

This morning these are the first thoughts that came to mind as I sat to write in my journal…

“I ask the Father with his great glory to give you the power to be strong in your spirits. He will give you that strength through his Spirit. 17 I pray that Christ will live in your hearts because of your faith. I pray that your life will be strong in love and be built on love. 18 And I pray that you and all God’s holy people will have the power to understand the greatness of Christ’s love—how wide, how long, how high, and how deep that love is. 19 Christ’s love is greater than anyone can ever know, but I pray that you will be able to know that love. Then you can be filled with everything God has for you.

20 With God’s power working in us, he can do much, much more than anything we can ask or think of. 21 To him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus for all time, forever and ever. Amen.” Ephesians 3:16-21 ERV

Many are beginning to make their New Year’s Resolution list. I don’t have one, but I found myself praying these words written by the Apostle Paul for all of you.

To know – really know – the full depth of God’s love for us is a life-long process. The height, the length, the depth, the width of the all-encompassing, unconditional love of God is incomprehensible to the human mind; it can only be understood because the Spirit of God gives us insight.

God’s power is free to work within us when we are filled with His love – His love drives out resentment, jealousy, bitterness, hatred, prejudice, evil. His love working through us does so much more than anything we could ever ask for or think of.

God, the Father, desires to see His fullness operational in our lives and that happens when we know and experience the depth of His love. Jesus was the human expression of God’s love, and He is our example of how we should live a life of love.

I’ve been mindful of the verses above for almost 40 years now and I will admit that I still don’t comprehend all there is to know about the Father’s love but I do know so much more than I used to. It’s a continual process of growing and developing in our relationship with Him that brings us to a greater experience of His love.

As I began to write this morning, I remembered the lyrics from an old song. It was recorded first in the 1950’s and has been re-recorded many times since, “I Wish You Love”. Here are a few of the lyrics…

“I wish you bluebirds in the spring
To give your heart a song to sing
And then a kiss, but more than this
I wish you love…

I wish you shelter from the storm
A cozy fire to keep you warm
But most of all when snowflakes fall
I wish you love”

As you start each day of the new year, I encourage you to tell the Father how much you love Him and ask Him to show you, in a personal way, His love.

More than health, much more than wealth, I pray you know His love!

A Child Is Born

I know some of you are probably getting up this morning with only a few hours’ sleep. Moms and dads work through the night putting presents under the tree and assembling others that are too big to wrap. We do this to see the joy on our children’s faces.

God knows about bringing joy to His children too. The most important gift of all was wrapped in humanity over 2000 years ago and then delivered by Mary and wrapped again in strips of cloth and laid in a manger.

The Father’s gift, planned through the ages, brings hope and peace to us even in our darkest times.

I have friends who are experiencing the loss of loved ones this year. Some just in the last few days and Christmas celebrations have been set aside to make room for grieving. Others have been diagnosed with life threatening disease. They’ve all had merrier Christmases than the one this year.

It’s easy to celebrate when you’re rested, strong and doing well. It’s something completely different to choose to celebrate in a time of sorrow, sickness and frailty. But you see, that’s the reason He came.

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6 KJV

He came to be MIGHTY in our weakness; He came to be PEACE in our turmoil and fear; He came to be WONDERFUL in our disappointment and He came to be COUNSELLOR in our grief and heartache.

“ I want you to know all about Christ’s love, although it is too wonderful to be measured. Then your lives will be filled with all that God is.” Ephesians 3:19 ERV

May you find all you need in Christ this Christmas. His life is what makes ours complete!

Copy/Paste Christmas Style

This morning I opened a tab and input the words “copy paste Christmas image” and what popped up was a catalog of images that were available to copy and paste of all things Christmas.

But that wasn’t quite what I was looking for. You know the concept was God’s idea.

“26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.” Genesis 1:25-27 KJV

God created us to be like Him – to be His representative, His counterpart on the earth. But when Adam sinned our nature was changed. God had to work to restore what He had intended for man to be. Enter Jesus.

“When anyone is in Christ, it is a whole new world. The old things are gone; suddenly, everything is new! 18 All this is from God. Through Christ, God made peace between himself and us. And God gave us the work of bringing people into peace with him. 19 I mean that God was in Christ, making peace between the world and himself. In Christ, God did not hold people guilty for their sins. And he gave us this message of peace to tell people. 20 So we have been sent to speak for Christ. It is like God is calling to people through us. We speak for Christ when we beg you to be at peace with God. 21 Christ had no sin, but God made him become sin[b] so that in Christ we could be right with God.” II Corinthians 5:17-21 ERV

Jesus restored us to the position that we had before Adam sinned. In Christ we are a NEW CREATION – a new creature – like the one that God created in the Garden of Eden. Jesus restored us to our original likeness.

He copies and pastes the origin blueprint that God used for man into our hearts when we receive the gift of salvation.

“But God is rich in mercy, and he loved us very much. 5 We were spiritually dead because of all we had done against him. But he gave us new life together with Christ. (You have been saved by God’s grace.)” Ephesians 2:4-5 ERV

In Christ we have been made new.

It’s not something we work to earn but something we receive freely by grace. Just as Adam was God’s idea and he did nothing to deserve or even request his creation so is our salvation and our restoration to a living and loving relationship with the Father God.

“Adam disobeyed God and caused many others to be sinners. But Jesus obeyed him and will make many people acceptable to God.” Romans 5:19 CEV

Copy/paste Christmas style! The gift of new life in Christ, the gift of being restored to the Father’s likeness.

Be An Example

Every day we are setting an example; whether we’re a good example or not is to be determined.

When you stop and think of people who have been good role models for you whose face comes to mind?

I think of one lady in particular. She was 20+ years older than I and she portrayed grace and kindness in all she did. Her home was comfortably decorated and neat, her personal appearance radiated with beauty and grace. She spoke words of kindness and her love for her husband and family were evident to all. I was blessed to know her.

Another woman I admired was an experienced horse woman. Her hands were leather tough from all the work she did. She trained horses, could build fence, tend a garden and put a meal on the table that would leave you asking for more. Her ways were rustic but her heart was tender and generous.

I haven’t seen either one of these ladies in years but the impression they made in my life has never faded.

The Apostle Paul wrote to a young preacher named Timothy and instructed him to be a good example.

“Here is a true statement that should be accepted without question: 10 We hope in the living God, the Savior of all people. In particular, he is the Savior of all those who believe in him. This is why we work and struggle.

11 Command and teach these things. 12 You are young, but don’t let anyone treat you as if you are not important. Be an example to show the believers how they should live. Show them by what you say, by the way you live, by your love, by your faith, and by your pure life.

13 Continue to read the Scriptures to the people, encourage them, and teach them. Do this until I come.” I Timothy 4:9-13 ERV

Be an example by what you say, the way you live and love. Be an encourager. Be pure and faithful.

What a mandate!

The Apostle Paul also told us all to be imitators of God – like little children imitate their parents.

“Do as God does. After all, you are his dear children.” Ephesians 5:1 CEV

Each day we have a fresh start to be a good example. Let’s use it wisely. Let’s imitate the Father!

Dusting Things Off

After being gone for almost five months let me assure you that our house needed a good cleaning when we returned. I can write my name on nearly every piece of furniture and even on the tile floors.

First thing we did was tackle the yard and patio. Dave has been working on cleaning the patio and all that was on it, while I have focused my attention on pruning and trimming the bushes, pulling out flowers that didn’t survive the summer heat and monsoon rains and replanting. Each day has been consumed with getting things spruced up and dusted off.

I see a couple more days of work ahead but I also see that we are making headway.

So, as I sit here this morning, coffee in hand, I am grateful for the dimmed lights in my office because it keeps me from seeing the layers of dust on the desk, bookcase, table and lamps.

I am also grateful that this presents me with an opportunity to reflect on God’s grace.

How many of you know that life can get dusty? We seem to deal with the issues that are most urgent, bringing them to the Lord in prayer, asking Him for help and intervention but there are other “small” things in the corners of our heart that never truly make it to the light of day and it’s these things that the layers of dust build up on. These are the little things that we choose to ignore.

Selfishness, hurt feelings, small outbursts of anger, little exaggerations (white lies), pride, wanting to be recognized for a job well done and the resentment that comes when we aren’t.

The Apostle Paul gave us instruction in half the book of Ephesians on daily living, chapters 4 and 5, teach us to clean up our lives and imitate God in the same way children imitate their parent.

“Stop all your dirty talk. Say the right thing at the right time and help others by what you say. 30 Don’t make God’s Spirit sad. The Spirit makes you sure that someday you will be free from your sins.

31 Stop being bitter and angry and mad at others. Don’t yell at one another or curse each other or ever be rude. 32 Instead, be kind and merciful, and forgive others, just as God forgave you because of Christ.

1 Do as God does. After all, you are his dear children. 2 Let love be your guide. Christ loved us and offered his life for us as a sacrifice that pleases God.” Ephesians 4:29-5:2 CEV

Please don’t be condemned by what I’m sharing this morning. The Father loves us and His word is never meant to condemn but it does correct. Sometimes we need a reminder of how we are to act.

If we let love be our guide and do as our Father does, we will see the “dusty” places in our heart and by His grace, He will help us clean them up.

So Help Me God

Before I start with today’s blog, let me explain what happened yesterday.

Our day started about 2 am with hard winds and blowing icy rain. About 4 am, that changed to snow. I’m not sure if the small booster antenna I have iced over and it prevented me from getting a signal but from 3:30am to almost 12 pm, my phone screen read “no service”.

But, I’m back today.

Dave and I were watching a movie, an old western, the other night and the character had to place his hand on the Bible and swear to tell the truth, so help me God. That got me to thinking – why and how did they practice become a part of court testimony?

Since most of our laws are based on Biblical instruction, I assume that this procedure also has its basis in the Bible.

“Humans have control over every kind of wild animal, bird, reptile, and fish, and they have controlled all these things. 8 But no one can control the tongue. It is wild and evil, full of deadly poison. 9 We use our tongues to praise our Lord and Father, but then we curse people who were created in God’s likeness. 10 These praises and curses come from the same mouth. My brothers and sisters, this should not happen.” James 3:7-10 ERV

Most all of us have had a problem with our tongues at one point or another. We had been known to embellish, exaggerate, gossip, criticize and twist the truth ever-so-slightly to make it fit our account or remembrance of an event. We need God’s help in controlling our words – it’s with His power that we can have victory in this.

We need God’s help to speak truth, the whole truth. Even God, Himself, when He needed to swear an oath, swore by His own name because there was nothing greater than Him.

“God wanted to prove that his promise was true. He wanted to prove this to those who would get what he promised. He wanted them to understand clearly that his purposes never change. So God said something would happen, and he proved what he said by adding an oath. 18 These two things cannot change: God cannot lie when he says something, and he cannot lie when he makes an oath. So these two things are a great help to us who have come to God for safety. They encourage us to hold on to the hope that is ours. 19 This hope is like an anchor for us. It is strong and sure and keeps us safe…” Hebrews 6:17-19 ERV

Each morning, our attitude should be “Lord, put a guard over my words. Let me speak the truth in every situation with a loving heart”.

“I know that you heard about him, and in him you were taught the truth. Yes, the truth is in Jesus. 22 You were taught to leave your old self. This means that you must stop living the evil way you lived before. That old self gets worse and worse, because people are fooled by the evil they want to do. 23 You must be made new in your hearts and in your thinking. 24 Be that new person who was made to be like God, truly good and pleasing to him. 25 So you must stop telling lies. “You must always speak the truth to each other,” because we all belong to each other in the same body.” Ephesians 4:21-25 ERV

Let’s be like that old cowboy in the movie, “I swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, so help me God!”

Running Short on Time

I remember one of the first blogs I wrote from the mountains at the beginning of summer. I was recounting how early each morning the sun came up. The birds would start singing at approximately 4:15am to welcome the day. Here we are, four months later and the day doesn’t start to dawn until 5:45am, an hour and a half later.

The days are getting shorter.

Yesterday, we had quite a few campers check-in and they all remarked, one way or another, that they were here for their last camping trip of the season. We were asked repeatedly, how much longer will you be here. Our answer, just one more week.

We are running short on time.

It’s hard to think about not being in this beautiful place each day. We have loved our time in the mountains and we are praying, and expecting, to return again next year. But as I wrote in my journal this morning not only are the days getting visibly shorter in regard to length of daylight, and our time on the calendar has a definite end date, the days we have left on this earth are also getting shorter.

We need to make the most of the time we have before us.

While we’re here at this campground, we need to be diligent about the tasks that we’ve been given. The facilities need to be winterized. Things need to be packed away and building needs to be prepared to protect against the damage that the harsh weather could bring. We are busy examining each individual campsite, making notes of needed repairs before the next season. And we only have so many hours of daylight in which to accomplish these tasks..

The same applies to the circumstances of our life. We need to redeem the time, make the most of each day, so that our lives are lived well and we give glory to the Lord.

“You used to be like people living in the dark, but now you are people of the light because you belong to the Lord. So act like people of the light 9 and make your light shine. Be good and honest and truthful, 10 as you try to please the Lord. 11 Don’t take part in doing those worthless things that are done in the dark. Instead, show how wrong they are…15 Act like people with good sense and not like fools. 16 These are evil times, so make every minute count. 17 Don’t be stupid. Instead, find out what the Lord wants you to do.” Ephesians 5:7-17 CEV

I’ve heard it said that time is our most precious commodity. It’s the only thing we can’t get more of. We all are allotted the same 24 hours, the key is to use them wisely. Show love and kindness to those around us; be appreciative; let the world see Jesus in what we do.

Jesus spoke these words to his disciples. He knew something that we don’t; He knew his life would be short, He knew the number of his days.

“As long as it is day, we must do what the one who sent me wants me to do. When night comes, no one can work. 5 While I am in the world, I am the light for the world.” John 9:4-5 CEV

Jesus’ instruction was that we make the most of each day. He came to bring light to the lives of mankind and when He left, He gave us the same instruction. Bring light and God’s glory to those around us.

Let’s make every day count because we’re running short on time!

Out In the Open

For the last several weeks it has been hunting season on the mountain. Deer, turkey, bear, antelope, mountain lion, elk and now duck. This is an area with an abundance of game.

For several days we traveled the road to town. It is so enjoyable because we would always see game in the open meadows or amongst the trees along the roadside. But about a week ago we noticed that the meadows were empty. It was hunting season and wildlife was scarce.

But two days ago they were back! The danger was gone and they felt safe to come out in the open.

I’m going to miss not being on the mountain! I’ve been reminded of so many of God’s truths in the last four months. These antelope brought another truth to mind. They retreated, they hid in the underbrush of the pine thickets during hunting season – they made it hard for their adversaries to find them.

In the Old Testament we find Scripture telling us that God is our hiding place. He protects us from our enemies.

” Show your wonderful love. Your mighty arm protects those who run to you for safety from their enemies. 8 Protect me as you would your very own eyes; hide me in the shadow of your wings.” Psalm 17:7-8 CEV

They hid instead of coming face-to-face with the enemy. But in the New Testament, we believers are instructed to “be bold”, unafraid, courageous as we face the enemy. Jesus told his disciples to go to Jerusalem and wait for the presence of the Holy Spirit who would fill them with power to be witnesses.

And that they did!

They went from hiding in the days after Christ’s crucifixion to standing boldly in front of the crowds and proclaiming the resurrection and new life in Christ. Their adversaries had them beaten and imprisoned. They were maligned and persecuted. Their response, they prayed for more boldness.

“Lord, listen to their threats! We are your servants. So make us brave enough to speak your message. 30 Show your mighty power, as we heal people and work miracles and wonders in the name of your holy Servant Jesus. 31 After they had prayed, the meeting place shook. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and bravely spoke God’s message.” Acts 4:29-31 CEV

Our reaction should be the same. When we have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, we have the power of God defending us. There is no reason to hide. Ours is not a defensive battle against our enemy, we are on the offensive – taking ground – enacting the victory!

“Finally, let the mighty strength of the Lord make you strong. 11 Put on all the armor that God gives, so you can defend yourself against the devil’s tricks. 12 We are not fighting against humans. We are fighting against forces and authorities and against rulers of darkness and powers in the spiritual world. 13 So put on all the armor that God gives. Then when that evil day comes, you will be able to defend yourself. And when the battle is over, you will still be standing firm.” Ephesians 6:10-14 CEV

We stand at the start of the battle and we will still be standing, victorious, when the battle is over!

Come out in the open and let the power of God bring us to victory!
